2 February 2015

From the principals

desk:
Welcome back to another
year at Baulkham Hills and a
special welcome to all our
new students, staff and their
families.
I wish to thank Mrs Hawken,
Mrs Johnstone and Mrs
Pigram who stepped up
during my absence last year.
I could only step away from
the school for other DEC
duties because I knew it
would be in great hands
while I was absent. I am
particularly happy to have
returned this year and look
forward to a busy and
successful year ahead.
NEW STAFF members this year
include Ms Johnson (English),
Mr Salter (LOTE), Ms Fletcher

CHROMEBOOK UPDATE

Work has commenced on the new Science block. It has taken

more than twelve months but we now have the fencing up
and tomorrow the site sheds should be installed. The
expectation is that the construction period will take 18 weeks
but that is in a perfect world, with no rain delays. The two
Science laboratories, a preparation room and two staff rooms
will make a huge difference to our facilities for this important
subject area. The long term plan then is to take one of our
1970s vintage Science labs out of commission and have them
re-furbished on a cyclical basis. This should take the next ten
years. This will mean that parent donations to our Building Fund
(tax deductible) will continue to be of immense importance.
Thank you to all our parents who have helped make a building
program possible.
Presentation night for this year has had to be moved. Our
original date clashed with Chinese New Year so we have
moved our date to 26th February. Students receiving awards
will be notified shortly.
Dr J. Bathgate

Thank-you to all of the parents,

especially those of Year 7 and Year 8
students who followed the schools
recommendation and purchased a
Chromebook online.
During the first week of school the IT
staff worked with all Year 7 students to
set up their school Moodle and BHHS
Google accounts. They also assisted
students to set up their purchased
Chromebooks.
The Chromebook purchasing portal will
remain open for the next 2 weeks for
parents who missed the first purchasing
opportunity.

During the January break 30 students

from BHHS attended Summer School at
the University of Sydney.
Our students were in classes with
people of all ages and were taught by
university staff and high school
teachers. Some were lucky enough to
have Mr Mike Salter, our new member
of staff, who has joined us this year and
is currently teaching Latin, Classical
Greek and French.
The students were complimented on
the way they conducted themselves
and their knowledge of Latin. At the
award ceremony, we swept the pool
winning four prizes out of a possible
seven. Grace Hoang (Year 12) and
Yuqing Li (Year 10) won awards for
translations of Latin into English. Lihini
Da Silva (Year 12) and Clifton Man
(Year 12) were awarded prizes by the
Nicholson Museum.
It is wonderful for the students to have
the opportunity to spend time at the
university and to mix and work with
others who love the study of Classics
and Im sure they all gained a lot from
this experience.
Lockers
Locker allocation is currently in
progress. Students will be notified in
Daily Notices when lockers become
available for use.
Year 7 will receive first allocation,
followed by seniors and then the
remainder of the school

PARKING RESTRICTIONS AND BUS ZONE SAFETY

To all parents, especially those new to the school: Your
attention is drawn to the parking restrictions which are clearly
signposted in the bus bay. During the times indicated, no cars
may stop in the bus bay or at the steps.
Parking Compliance Officers regularly patrol the school and
will photograph vehicles and issue infringement notices to
offenders. There is an area at the bottom of the bus bay
where students may be dropped off in the mornings (during
inclement weather). We do however encourage the use of
side streets adjacent to the school (such as Carver Crescent,
Coronation Road and Chelsea Avenue) for dropping off and
picking up of students. It is only a short distance and is easily
managed by all students. The presence of private vehicles in
the bus bay creates dangerous congestion and poses
significant risk to the safety of all our students.
Parents must not make arrangements to meet their children in
the bus bay or on school grounds. The car park is out of
bounds to all students.

Please do not drive into the car park to

drop off or pick up students unless prior
arrangements have been made such
as in the case of an injured or disabled
student.
Please
note:
Child
Safety and
Protection guidelines set by the
Department require that parents and
visitors who enter school grounds must
first report to Reception.
