Long test 1

Review Exercises
1st Semester, SY 2014-2015
Here are some problems you may want to look at to prepare for the long test. I will not collect this, so feel free to try
them out or not.
The coverage of the test will be everything we took up until last Monday (21July 2014)/Tuesday (22July 2014). In terms
of the powerpoint presentations, this is up to Lewis structures. Bring a pen and your calculators on Thursday, July 24.
Answer the following questions.
1. Why do we call chemistry The Central Science?
2. Differentiate a scientific law from a hypothesis and a theory.
3. What is the scientific method? Is there a need for it?
4. Why did the idea that matter was continuous prevail for so long? Who were the key thinkers in proving the
contrary?
5. What are the main points of Daltons atomic theory? Do these hold completely true until today?
6. Who are the key players and contributors to our knowledge of the atom? What specific concept did they
contribute?
7. How can we use the atomic spectra of elements be used in chemical analysis to identify unknown atoms?
8. What do we mean when we say the purpose in life of each element is stability?
9. Explain the statement: The periodic table offers great order and is a vital tool for the modern chemist.
10. Why does the size of the atomic radius increase as we go down along a period?
Try out these problems.
1. What is the density of (a) a sulfuric acid solution if 5.00mL has a mass of 7.52 g? (b) a 10.0cm3 block of plastic
with mass of 9.23g? Will this block of plastic float in water or not?
2. Some metal chips having a volume of 3.29cm3 are placed on a piece of paper and weighed. The combined mass
is found to be 18.43g. The paper itself weighs 1.21g. Calculate the density of the metal.
3. Do the following conversions. Report final answers in proper scientific notation and with the correct number of
significant figures:
a. 5.0029 mL to pL
e. 82.0000 L to L
b. 1.00000 cm to Mm
f. 3772 m3 to L
3
c. 72093.00 L to cm
g. 22837.2332 g to kg
d. 334.23 K to oC
h. 19 mm to km
4. To the nearest atomic mass unit, one atom of calcium has a mass of 40units and another calcium atom has a
mass of 44units. Do these findings contradict Daltons atomic theory?
5. A neutron strikes an atom Uranium-235 and splits it into two smaller atoms. Do these findings support or
contradict Daltons atomic theory?
6. Write down the complete electronic configuration of anion Se2-. (Remember that this is an anion, not the neutral
element.) With which neutral element is this species isoelectronic with?
7. List down the possible quantum number designations for an electron with n=2. A table will do
8. Give the complete orbital diagram for Antimony (Sb).
9. Use Lewis dot symbols to show the formation of NH3.
10. Write the Lewis structure for the following:
a. H2O
b. CO2
c. CH4
d. PH4+
e. AlCl63-
