1 Overview
The importance of IP has been validated by the year-to-year increase of new Internet
applications. New advances in IP networking technology 7324 RU have been introduced to
change the landscape of broadband service offerings.
Traditional ATM based DSLAM technology aggregates the ADSL traffic as ATM cell format, and
use ATM fabric switching technology to switch the ATM cell to the ATM network, normally the
switching capacity is about 155M to 622M, and through the traffic management to control the
congestion problems, it can provide the good QoS for both internet access and leased line
application. The conversion of traffic format is as the following diagram:
1-1
Alcatels 7324 RU is the IP-based DSLAM, which terminates all of the ATM circuits, and
converts the traffic directly into the Ethernet environment. The common design of 7324 RU
enhances the flexibility in new service offering and reduces the complexity of provisioning.
The IP core technology of 7324 RU enables service providers to deploy broadband service to
more customers quickly, and efficiently. Also it is flexibe in backhaul bandwidth upgrade and
reduces a lot of switch costs than previously possible.

Product Overview
Ethernet service provisioning chassis switches are ideally suited for delivering broadband IP
services from service provider data centers, central office or multi-tenant buildings to
enterprise and home users. By utilizing xDSL technology, it provides services like Internet and
Multimedia to comprise high-quality vedio application.
The 7324 RU R3.0 platform provides total Ethernet coverage with support for both standard
Category 5 and fiber optic media as well as first mile technology 7324 RU R3.0 that extend the
reach of xDSL.
With a variety of DSL services, 7324 RU R3.0 is deigned for deployment in central office or data
center environment, where the services are directly delivered to customers through copper
wires, while the service reach can be extended up to 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) in case of
SHDSL connectivity., which covers around 80% of customer serving area. For the fiber to the
building (FTTB, FTTH, FTTC) architecture, 7324 RU R3.0 can be located in building telecom
room to deliver high bandwidth services to end-users. It is another market segment of revenue
generation tool for building owners and service providers.
The 7324 RU R3.0 is a chassis-based DSLAM which consists of 5 line cards and 1 management
and switching card, see Figure 2-1. All modules are hot-swappable design, which provide
plug-and-play on-site operation.

7324 RU Revisions
The orginial 7324 RU named R1.0 provides the fundamental IP DSLAM features, ADSL line card
Annex A and copper Fast Ethernet as uplink interface were supported. The second revision
7324 RU R2.0 supports two DSL line cards those are Annex A ADSL, and Annex B ADSL, on the
MSC card also more Ethernet interfaces are supported -- 1000BaseSX, 1000BaseLX and
100BaseFX, on EMS (element management system) the Windows version and Unix version are
both supported. The latest revision 7324 RU R3.0 supports four DSL line cards those are Annex
A ADSL, Annex B ADSL, SHDSL, and Annex A ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+ line card, on the MSC card
same as R2.0 Ethernet interfaces are supported.

Overview
The 7324 RU R3.0 is an IP core DSLAM design, which terminates all the ATM cells on xDSL
loops, and using a non-blocking Ethernet switching up to 12.8Gbps. The port trunking of
uplinks can aggregate the uplink traffic to easily upgrade the bandwidth to the backhaul. In
order to apply Ethernet technology for Teleco operators, 4096 VLAN ID are designed for
identifying xDSL subscribers and its service type, 802.1p priority queues are provided to
prioritize different type of service, for such of triple play services, subtending design protect
the Telecos investment on the equipment cost.
The system design is based on the following specification.

The system hardware design architecture is as the following diagram, the xDSL line cards
aggregate 24 ports of xDSL and reassembly the ATM cells to IP packets, all IP packets of line
cards are then sent to MSC for switching the IP packets. The management of the system is also
done by MSC.

3.3.1 ADSL cards and splitter cards (both Annex A and Annex B)
The ALC1024-61/63 aggregate 24 ADSL ports to one 100Mbps Ethernet up-link to MSC. Main
features of ALC1024-61/63 are:
?? 24 ADSL ports with RFC1483 bridge mode
?? ATM AAL-5 to Ethernet frame translation

MSC1000 provides three slots on its front panel for uplink and subtending purposes where
users can slide in different Ethernet modules. Those modules are not hot-swappable which
means the entire MSC1000 must be powered down when installing/uninstalling those
modules.
Four modules are available for Uplink and Subtending slots

The other optional module feeds the 60VDC to the back plane and contains inductor to
isolation electromagnetic interference, fuse and circuit breaker for over current protection and
MOV for surge (over voltage) protection. Each card uses 60VDC input, and then convert the
60VDC to the required power on the boards.
3-20
The air flows from the right hand side panel of the chassis, through the space between cards
and carry out the heat from the left hand side panel of chassis, as illustrated below
3-21
There are 2 fans in the FAN module. The FAN module is hot swappable, when the FAN module
is unplugged, the power module is still keep alive.

Splitters are typically used in a DSL system and to separate the voice and data signals from the
DSL lines, as the diagram shown below. In 7324 RU R3.0 all those interfaces go through
telco-50 connectors on front panel (to DSLAM) and on the splitter chassis rear panel (to PSTN
switch and to xdsl CPE).
4-4
While installing 7324 RU R3.0, the telco-50 cables attaching to the USER connectors on splitter
chassis rear panel shall go to the CPE side, while telco-50 cables attaching to the CO
connectors shall go to the PSTN switch side, as shown below.

4.7.2 Other safety requirements for installing 7324 RU R3.0 are listed below
?? Rack should be safely support the combined weight of all the equipment it
contains.
?? The position of the 7324 RU R3.0 does not make the rack unstable or top-heavy.
Take all necessary precautions to anchor the rack securely before installing the
unit.
?? Nothing obstructs the airflow of the main chassis
?? Installer shall provide a buildings protective earthing terminal. It is needed to
connect the frame ground before connecting any other cables or wiring
