A familiar topic was ad-
dressed again at the February
1 meeting of Mount Pocono
Borough Council. Local dentist
Gregory Pence attended the
meeting with a petition from
residential and commercial
property owners in the bor-
ough in opposition to the Snow
Removal Ordinance.
Of the 82 properties affected
by the Snow Removal Ordi-
nance, 38 signed the petition.
The petitioners believe the
ordinance requiring property
owners remove snow from
their sidewalks within 24 hours
is “unreasonable and unjust.”
Pence told council that he

In a rare Saturday morning
session in Long Pond, post-
poned by Wednesday’s snow-
storm Feb. 13, citizens and
supervisors went through the
proposed 2010 Tunkhannock
Township budget again, then
supervisors passed it—the

seeking letters of interest for
the open supervisor’s term, to

Jim Lambert submitted a let-
ter with 17 questions about the
budget. These were the major-
ity of the questions during the
budget session, but other citi-
zens also chimed in with tough
questions. Secretary/treasurer
Marie Wieand read a review of
the past seven years’ budgets,
which were deeply in the red
from 2005 through 2008 (total-
ing almost $500,000 in the red

The total amount of the re-
imbursement is $1,903.74 for
septic testing, soil probes,
perk tests, inspection and ex-
cavation at the site.
Supervisor James Frutchey
explained that the problem
stemmed from The Cross hav-
ing to deal with two different
Sewage Enforcement Officers
and changing regulations at
the Department of Environ-
mental Protection. Frutchey
stated that the changes result-
ed in excessive testing and re-
testing that was not the fault of
backhoe rental and work re-
quired at the site.
Supervisor Robert Hutchins
made the motion to approve
the request with conditions.
The condition is that the fees
are waived only if the project
moves forward. However, if the
project does not move forward
and the property changes
hands, the fees would be due
upon transfer of ownership.
The motion passed 3-1, with
Lynn Kelly voting against it.
Chairman Joseph O’Boyle was
absent.

garding speeding school bus-
es in the Township, particularly
on Laurel Drive. Pope com-

land. Other subjects include her
extensive gardens and the wild
birds that visit them, local farms
and vistas along the Delaware
River, her own dogs and cats, and
the places of her travels. She also
paints animal portraits by com-
mission.
Tricia received a Bachelor of
Arts in Oil Painting from Marlboro
College in Vermont in 1981. She
spent a summer at the Banff
tist Magazine show in New York.
Her work may be found in many
private collections.
Of her work the artist says, “My
favorite artists include the Impres-
sionists, Edward Hopper, the chil-
drenʼs book illustrators of the
1920ʼs and American Folk Art. I
love the clarity of light and the
whimsy of nature. My painting in-
spirations come from the many
wonderful particles of life which
surround me. I blend these ele-
ments together in my paintings to
create a unique style.”
“Paintings and Pastels”, a col-
lection of art work by Tricia Low-
rey Lippert is currently on exhibit
at the Auradell Gallery at the
Stroudsmoor Country Inn until
March 21. The Auradell Gallery is

meal with Ruth on Sunday,
and had noticed that the
Jonas Hotel was advertising
an appealing special menu.
Time got away from us,
though, and we ended up
going out on Monday instead.
No matter—we avoided the
crowds, and enjoyed the ro-

another room, her paintings of
Jim Thorpe scenes as well as
pottery by Valerie Bates gave
us plenty to look at.
Dining Out
The menu featured burgers
and sandwiches, pizza and
pasta, along with chicken,
seafood and steak entrées.
But everyone in the dining
room and bar seemed to be
eating pizza—and it looked
good! We listened to the spe-
cials our waitress listed, and in
fact we ordered one—the
pizza special—an extra large
pie for just $9, to which we
added toppings—mushrooms
and garlic, $1.50 each. Weʼd
been considering the Shrimp
Loverʼs Pizza, a white pie, so
we asked if we could add
shrimp to the red pie special.
Sure, she said, just an extra
$5. Sounded good to us.
Also from her daily specials,
we ordered cups of soup,
potato leek and Italian wed-
ding, $2.50 each. They were
both good, but the potato leek
was outstanding—a bit more
liquid than mashed potatoes,

and the perfect winter nightʼs
soup, so good we ordered and
split a whole bowl of it, $3.50.
I washed this down with a
bottomless glass of Birch
beer, which was on tap at the
bar, $1.95, while Ruth sipped
a glass of Pinot Noir, $5.25.
Our waitress appeared,
bearing a huge pizza on a
pedestal. This was a work of
art, too, with vibrant red sauce
as a base, and pale curls of
garlic and shrimp, inter-
spersed with thin brown mush-
room slices. It tasted as good
as it looked. The crust was
thin and crisp. Garlic was
assertive but complementary
to the sweet tomato sauce,
and the shrimp were plentiful
and tender. We didnʼt think we
could finish it, and we didnʼt,
but we did eat all but two
slices we took home for lunch.
After that, the idea of des-
sert sounded silly, except that
our waitress told us the carrot
cake was homemade. Thatʼs a

weakness of ours (our wed-
ding cake was a carrot cake),
so we split a generous slice,
$3.95. It was a good choice,
tall and generous with carrots,
very moist, with a very good
cream cheese icing. We ate it
slowly, savoring each bite.
Ruth reached her full point
about mid-way through the
cake, and I was full after
washing it down with the rest
of my glass of birch beer.
This was fun. Itʼs a short ride
for most Journal readers, a
nice stop with good food, well
prepared and reasonably
priced, in a truly historic site.
