BARWON HEADS ASSOCIATION INC.

Hello everyone,
July brings icy winds across the strait probably blowing
right up to Mt Bulla for all our ski enthusiasts but for the
rest of us we hibernate or rug up for a trip down the street!
First some EOFY business.
Membership renewals for 2015-16 are now due. Please
fill in the form inserted in this Talking Heads or go to our
website to download. Please encourage your neighbours
to join also and consider coming on to our Committee and
thank you again to our editor Trish for all her support.
Our guest speaker for our July meeting will be Sarah
Henderson, our federal member in our electorate of
Corangamite. Although Sarah does not have jurisdiction
over local government and state issues there are still
many important areas that affect our community.
Childcare, pensions, the environment and renewable
energy are just some which come to mind. This is an
opportunity to hear what is going on in Corangamite and
ask questions on issues which are important to you.
A second Community Reference Group meeting with
VicRoads re our Pedestrian Safety Project in June.
VicRoads also presented a progress-to-date report to
our June meeting. This was lead by Mark Tonkin, Team
Leader Road Safety & Traffic Engineering and supported
by Susan Philips Community Liaison for VicRoads. Mark
acknowledged that the Community Reference Group
would like to have traffic slowed in both Hitchcock
Avenue and Bridge Road, in the vicinity of the local
shopping areas to enable pedestrians and families safer
access across the roads to all shops and stores.
VicRoads has taken the identified issues and pedestrian
data and developed three zones in which the highest
concern for improvement is regarded.
1. Bridge Road and Hitchcock Avenue
2. Bridge Road and Ewing Blyth Drive
(including Flinders Parade)
3. Pedestrian island near IGA
Issues surrounding cyclists and public transport have
also been looked into. VicRoads wants to ensure that all
possible options that could improve pedestrian access
and cater for all transport movements at these three
locations have been explored. Traffic data from January
2014, including pedestrian and turning traffic counts will
allow VicRoads to test the traffic impact of each
improvement option. VicRoads is conducting traffic

modelling to indicate the level of delay and travel time

impact for each option compared to current movements.
The options being considered and being tested in
the traffic modelling are: Pedestrian island upgrades /
traffic calming or traffic signals (Bridge Road &
Hitchcock Avenue) or Zebra crossings, without flashing
lights, or with speed humps, or with flashing lights, and
finally the Shared Space Concept in Bridge Street, ie. a
mix of slow moving vehicles and a median for
pedestrians
[The BHA has made it clear to VicRoads that
feedback from our community to date does not
support traffic lights.
VicRoads plan for an open community information
session to be held in August 2015, with options being
presented to the Community Reference Group prior to
the public exhibition. This will enable VicRoads to gauge
feedback from the broader community and present the
recommendations to the Reference group prior to
finalising a proposed treatment.
Last month we suggested we had good news about
footpathsperhaps not so fast. The BHA
Committee met with William Tieppo the new General
Manager, City Services to inspect our old footpaths.
Although nothing was forthcoming from this meeting
William was met by residents and committee members
who clearly outlined our concerns about the significant
deterioration in our footpaths and their lack of suitability
for the purpose of safe passage. We take this as a
formal notification to the CoGG of our concerns and our
expectation is that they will fulfill their responsibilities as
soon as possible.
Please report any falling & tripping incidents to the
Geelong Council, and any uneven footpaths.
contactus@geelongcity.vic.gov.au or phone 5272 5272
Next meeting Monday 20th July 7.30 pm Senior
Citizens Centre.
Guest speaker Sarah Henderson MP. All welcome.
We appreciate feedback on any issues. You can

BARWON HEADS

New and Old

When I first came to the Op Shop as a

volunteer in July of 1993, the Main
Shop, which has recently become the
Op Shop, (it was originally in what is
now the Jigsaw Library), had only
trestle tables on which clothes were
displayed. The former church hall was still used two
or three times a year for church meetings, and we would
have to pack up all the clothes and dismantle all the
trestles, to clear the hall. The following year, dear
Beatrice Waterman, who had initiated the Op Shop,
died, and I rather unwillingly took over, having never
had any retail or other shop experience. It was at this
time that the committee which oversees our
organisation gave permission for us to access racks to

hang clothing. The original ones we owned came from a

manufacturer in Nth. Geelong, and we purchased these
rather roughly made racks for $30 each. They do have
small wheels, but were never going to be suitable for
taking in and out regularly to display clothing outside the
garage which is our Sorting room. Excellent new racks
which roll smoothly were purchased for that purpose
about seven years ago. But recently, the old original
racks were beginning to not only look very tired, but
were very hard to work with, and often dangerous. So in
mid-June, a new stainless steel rack with capacity to
display two rows of clothes was purchased. Although
two other volunteers puzzled and sweated with me as
we assembled this new addition, it has been such a
success that new three others will be ordered. Certainly
they cost five times what one original cost, but with
double the capacity, their excellent appearance, and the
rise in the cost of all things since, we feel that this has
been yet another major step in improving the service we
are able to give you. Thanks once again to all who
provide the wonderful donations of clothes to be
recycled.
Whilst it is great to tell of new things, there are many old
PROBLEMS which arise. The obvious ones are the
continued dumping of electrical goods, which we cant
sell, and of crappy furniture which falls apart even as
we try to get it to an area where it will be sent away as
rubbish. But one on-going problem which confounds us
is the stealing of certain items! Of course we have the
random removal of small items....a box which contained
a small piece of jewellery is found empty, or camera-

case without a camera, for example. But the one thing

which caused a rather vocal member of our staff to have
an almost apoplectic fit, was the lifting of yet another
deodorant spray from our toilet. I am frequently sad
when I notice that rather than two spare toilet rolls, there
is only one when we lock up that area. But in this case,
our volunteer had found quite an expensive lavender
spray, recently donated, yet again nicked!! We would
love to provide a toilet spray, since most of our homes
would not be without one. But in most cases they walk
before they have been used more than once or
twice.....and this is now a very old problem, I guess those
of you who use the fly-spray still left there feel that it
doesnt help much. Sorry! To conclude on a happier
note: many people have commented on the pleasant
show of little daisies and pansies near the new fencing
put up to enclose the front area when the Playgroup
uses the lawn-area at the front of the church. A kind
customer called Leigh donated these, and Sonja, who
works so hard in our gardens, happily planted them.
Sonja was not so happy that she had lost her brightgreen Ryobi 1 electric drill. She does most of the simple
maintenance, and does not believe that this valuable
item was stolen. She fears she may have left it
somewhere, and just asks that if you were the person
who picked it up, could it please be returned.
Do remember that we have a wonderful collection of
coats, scarves, and woollens to keep you warm in this
wintry weather.
God bless you all,
Helen Edwards

On Sunday, 14th June

we were very privileged
to have two of the most
superb piano trios
performed for us by Violiopedia in the
Anglican Church!
They were from 2 of the greatest composers: Beethoven
(1770-1827) & Mendelssohn (1809-1847). The piano
trio developed in Beethovens period to be equally
challenging for the 3 instruments with developed themes
& extended harmonic structures in 4 movements.

Beethoven Piano Trio in Eb Major, Op.1 No.1: Allegro

displays an abundance of themes & richness of texture;
Adagio cantabile has a gentle lyrical & unhurried beauty;
the scherzo is full of energy, elegance & levity; the finale,
presto, shows Beethoven in a playful mood,
experimenting with rhythm & harmony.

Mendelssohn Piano Trio No 1 in D minor, Op. 49 was

written in 1839 & is one of the most popular of all
chamber works crammed with soaring melodies, rich
harmonic progressions & rhythmic intensity with the
most virtuosic piano writing which perfectly integrates
the expressive potential of strings & piano. The 4

Australias productions. Akiko Loong on piano is a
graduate from the Musashino Academy of Music in
Tokyo. She plays regularly with Julien, accompanies
students for exams & is a pianist for the Royal Academy
of Dance in Victoria. Dennis Vaughan, on cello, is
extensively involved in Melbournes music circles as a

So, I went to a bhamitzva last week.

It was my first bhamitzva. And I like doing 'first' things.
It makes me feel progressive. Like I'm learning
something new. Acquiring a new skill set. Seeing how
something else fits. This bhamitzva involved my first
step into a synagogue, my first meeting of a rabbi and
an introduction on how to "shower one with sweetness."
Which basically means to throw lollies as hard as you
can at a 13 year olds head.
That is, if you can hold the lollies in your hand long
enough without eating them.

As bearded blokes wearing glasses swayed and the

lollies sweated it out in my hands, I listened to the
Rabbi explain the words being sung. He gave
contemporary meaning to the ancient texts - making
me reflect on the rituals of my own upbringing. As well as
that of my family now.
He spoke of truth with your neighbours. He spoke of the
sharing of your sheep.
He spoke of justice and kindness and peace.
And then he spoke about Shabbat. The 7th day of
creation. A day when the Torah asks us to rest. Down
tools, up stumps and no more bets for a whole day.
Ancient believers would take it a step further, taking
Shabbat every 7th year. That is, take a whole year
off. Having faith that their fields would feed them.
Having faith that their community would support them.
Having faith that their Love would hold them.
I looked across at my lover, his eyes closed over a
tired face. I realised this Bhamitzva was our first
day off work together in a long, long time. Too busy with
work, we hadn't had time to feed each other. Made
time to support each other. Held time to love each
other.
Lately, we hadn't really stopped much at all.

It's deepest, darkest winter now. The season asks of

us to take deep rest. To create our own quiet
Shabbat. It doesn't have to be a whole year, you might
not even have a whole day. But a short space of
contemplative prayer. An hour to feel the moments
between the moments. Ten minutes to remember a
faith that will support us. A breath we are reminded
of the power of Love.
Love like we felt it, held it and shared it. When it
was the very first time.

The central nervous system runs from the brain

down the spinal cord. Encouraging length along
the spine allows the central nervous system to run
unimpeded. When we practise Asana with
awareness we become aware of our posture.
Combining the breath with our stretching, twisting,
bending and balancing assists in soothing or
stimulating the central nervous system (depending
on the purpose of the pose). This assists with
releasing stress, energising our minds, improving
our digestive system, releasing toxins, and
stimulating the lymphatic drainage system therefore boosting our entire immune system.
Other physical benefits are gained. We tone and
stretch our muscles. Our joints are encouraged to
move freely and we also have the ability to re-align
poor posture. Balancing increases our bone
density and general physical balance. Yoga has
also been proven to slow down the ageing process

(side bends) offer the opportunity to
look at things from another
perspective; Forward Bends are
about looking within and Inversions
(going upside down) are
restorative.
From a spiritual perspective it maybe a case of the
chicken or the egg! Six of the main eight Chakras
(energy centres) are situated along the spine. Even
though Chakras are comprised of energy, poor
posture can still impede the distribution of the
energy of the Chakra to the relevant body parts. In
the same instance, an underactive or overactive
Chakra also has an effect on the relevant body
parts and in turn affects our posture!
When we apply the first two limbs of Yoga the
Yamas (restraints of behaviour) and the Niyamas
(observances of behaviour) we can engage the
mind to observe how we are in a pose. Are we
judgemental towards ourselves or accepting of
where our practice takes us? We can approach our
Yoga practice as we would like to live our lives. We
take the insight we have gained off of our mats and
into our day to day life.

BARWON HEADS FILM SOCIETY

Thursday July 30th at 7.45pm at the Community Hall, Barwon Heads Film Society presents

Thursday March 26 at 7.45pm at the Community Hall

Dir: Clint Eastwood. The story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s
rock group The Four Seasons.
Cast: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda
the film itself is solid and entertaining, but right at the end it all comes together in a moment of imaginative flight. Its like the closing number of a
Broadway show that sends the audience out on a high.

Barwon Heads Sustainability Group

Winter Solstice celebrations
kicked off at the Community Garden on a cold Saturday night. Local produce was shared
amongst the group with a guest appearance from a local Waurn Ponds farmer who popped
in with lovely persimmons served with sticky coconut rice, delightful.

Green Steps
was a fabulous local project funded by FRRR (Foundation for Rural and Regional
Renewal) allowing our group to provide energy & waste audits for 10 local businesses.
This was a great opportunity for local businesses to have their electricity bills analysed by
appliance. The biggest power use was no surprise being refrigeration heating/cooling and
lighting. Solar PV options were also discussed, with full quotes and benefits report
provided. Overall we identified over $6,000 worth of potential savings (excl solar savings),
some solutions were simple as changing to LED lights other will require some longer term
planning. All participants were grateful for the information and we'll follow them up in 12
months to see our suggestions working for them. This was a great project for small
business owners which in turn helps the local economy. The projects funding body, FRRR
are a great resource for regional Victorian communities. FRRR's strategy is focused on
enabling communities to build their social capital and economic resilience; by
engaging and providing resources for projects that create the change that
communities aspire to achieve.

Let our Sea be Plastic Bag Free - Borrow & Bring Back a
shopping bag concept kicked off with Bellarine Secondary College sewing 35 shopping
bags on World Environment Day. We gave the students a brief presentation on the damage
plastic does to our marine life, then hopped straight into to cutting stamping and sewing the bags from recycled materials. We need about 200 bags to
launch in September, so if you can help sew, cut, stamp or have spare medium weight material, give us a call on 0417518685 or email us at
info@bhsustainability.org.au.
Great Ideas for Barwon Heads Community Plan Review - Does your community group have a project that could be
reflected in a community plan, call or email us your ideas.
Check out our Website www.bhsustainability.org.au.

Market Stall- We are at the Barwon Heads Market on the last Saturday of each month (Feb-Nov). Drop by and say hello! You may even wish to join
our roster of volunteers who run the monthly stall, starting as a helper
First Wednesday Drinks + Chat Session - We meet the first Wednesday of the month at Beach House Barwon Heads for a drink &
chat. All welcome.

Feedback & Ideas- We'd love to hear from you. Contact Anthony 0417 015 808 or Faye 0417 518 685 or email us at sustain@bhartsgarden.com
Barwon Heads Sustainability Group activities are supported by a grants from Barwon Heads Community Bank, FRR and COGG. We also received
donations from All Saints Op Shop.

Talking food...
5 Minute Chocolate Cashew Slice

6 tablespoons peanut butter or cashew butter...3 tablespoons coconut oil

(mine was somewhere between soft and liquid)...3 tablespoons honey...2
tablespoons cacao or cocoa...1/2 teaspoon concentrated natural vanilla
extract... pinch of salt...1/2 cup cashews, crushed (I placed them in paper
bag and crushed them with my rolling pin)
Place all ingredients except for the cashews into a medium sized bowl and
mix until well combined and looking deliciously chocolatey...stir in the
cashews...pour the mixture into a silicon loaf tin and sprinkle with
coconut...place in the fridge to set...this slice only takes a couple of hours
to set, however, the longer you leave it the firmer it will become...I like it
best the day after making.
Store in the fridge as it will melt at room temperature.

Drama is very important in life: You have to come on with a bang. You never want to go out with a whimper.
Everything can have drama if it's done right. Even a pancake.

Gluten free Parmesan Crackers

200 g (2 cups) almond meal... 150 g (1 cup) finely grated good-quality

Parmesan...plus extra finely shredded to sprinkle... tsp cayenne pepper...
1 egg... 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to brush...
Preheat oven to 200C (180C fan-forced)...line 2 large oven trays with
non-stick baking paper...combine the almond meal, parmesan and cayenne
pepper in a medium bowl...whisk together the egg and olive oil, add to the
almond meal mixture and use your hands to mix thoroughly to a soft dough.
Divide the mixture in half and use a rolling pin to roll out a portion between
two sheets of non-stick baking paper until 5 mm thick...use a sharp knife or
pizza wheel to cut into 5 cm squares and then place on the baking
trays...repeat with the remaining portion of dough, re-rolling any offcuts...lightly brush the crackers with a little extra olive oil and sprinkle
with a little extra finely shredded parmesan...bake in preheated oven for
10-12 minutes, swapping the trays around after 5 minutes, or until crisp
and golden...cool on the trays...store in an air tight container.

I was 32 when I started cooking;

Up until then, I just ate

Confit garlic

5 Ways To Use Garlic Confit

Whip a few cloves and some of the infused oil
with vinegar to make a vinaigrette. Toss it
with delicate greens.
Smash some of the cloves and whisk them with
some of the infused oil. Toss the thick garlicky
oil with steamed vegetables. (Excellent with
asparagus, green beans, snow and snap peas,
broccoli, and cauliflower.)
Toss roasted or grilled vegetables with a
spoonful of the tender garlic.

Separate and peel cloves from 4 heads

of garlic...cover with & simmer in olive
oil, with a few sprigs of rosemary,
thyme or lemon balm and a slice of
lemon peel in a saucepan on very low
for 45 minutes or until very
soft...cool...store in an airtight
container in the refrigerator for up to
3 weeks.

Spread the tender cloves over toasted bread

or cheese-smeared crostini. (Goat cheese is a
great option.) For a composed hors d'oeuvre,
garnish the garlic toasts with chives or any
fresh herbs.
A whipped chickpea or cannellini bean puree
will also benefit from a spoonful of garlic
confit.

Barwon Heads Soccer Club

The BHSC Mighty Leopards Junior Under 7s team

at the regional Hub at Village Park
Kids playing with the Barwon Heads Junior Soccer Club can attend
training only, or they can choose to play in organised MiniRoos
matches against teams from other junior soccer clubs in the region. The
teams get together on a Sunday morning at venues all around the
Soccer takes over the Village Park
Peninsula and Surf Coast to play these matches, at events called
Regional
Hubs. On May 24 and 31, it was Barwon Heads' turn to play host
as Barwon Heads hosts the regional Hub matches
to all the regional teams, at their training grounds at the Village Park. The
Hubs are a major undertaking, involving multiple teams from Surf Coast FC (Torquay), Surfside Waves SC (Ocean Grove), Barwon SC (Grovedale),
Drysdale SC, and Bellarine Sharks AFC (St Leonards), which means the involvement of hundreds of players and spectators.
Hosting the Hubs involves a massive effort from parents and helpers to put together the goals, mark out and set up the pitches, prepare and staff the canteen and
sausage sizzle, and pack down at the end of the day. Many thanks are due to our amazing teams of volunteers, who prepared weeks in advance, and then
worked tirelessly from early morning to the end of the day to ensure the two hubs were super successful, and who helped the canteen and sausage sizzle to raise
much-needed funds to help the running of the club.
In the next edition of Talking Heads we're looking forward to presenting some player profiles of the talented kids that participate in junior soccer in Barwon Heads,
so see you then.

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

Responding to call outs
Barwon Heads Fire Brigade has responded to 27
call outs so far this year in and around Barwon
Heads, Ocean Grove and Connewarre.
However, not all fire fighting takes place on dry land
sometimes we are required to manage situations from
the water. The Brigade recently took possession of
five personal flotation devices to help keep our crews
safe in such circumstances. You may think they are an
unusual piece of equipment to have in our trucks but
they have been issued to brigades with large aquatic
environments in their response areas. Believe it or not
we have responded to several incidents on the Barwon
Heads Bridge over the years.

These 'life jackets' are designed with specific features

to fit over our uniform, inflate on contact with water
and connect to a fixed point to enable fire fighting from
the water. The ultimate ideal is that a situation never
arises where we might have to use them, however it's
good to know we have them should we ever need.
Our fire trucks or 'appliances' as they're known in CFA
language are fitted with practical fire fighting
equipment and other items, such as the life jackets, to
assist with various situations. We keep a variety of
accessories on board such as emergency lighting,
breathing apparatus and suits that protect us from
hazardous materials, plus other useful items such as
rake hoes and ladders.
Every Sunday we check the equipment to make sure
all is in good order. We are also required to take the
fire trucks for a 30km drive to make sure the engines

get a good run and the batteries are not in danger of

going flat. You may well see the appliances passing
you as you enjoy a coffee in Hitchcock Avenue on a
Sunday morning - don't forget to give us a wave!
Barwon Heads Fire Brigade has a Facebook page
informing you of local community safety events and
insights to what the Brigade is up to (search Barwon
Heads fire brigade). Make sure you jump on and give
us a like to follow what we are up to.
The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is seeking new
members. If you are interested in learning new
skills, meeting new people and being part of a
team that contributes to the safety of our
community, please call Captain Tony Hodder on

Barwon Heads Community Garden

Here is some follow-up on reports from the previous year:
The citrus circle: Under the ongoing care of Chris Balaam and
Graeme Hiller, the citrus trees are continuing to thrive! Such is
their growth that we may even need to do a little pruning on the
north side. We have abundant crops of lemons, grapefruit, limes
and oranges, all now ripening: plenty of material for making
marmalade!
Washington Navel Oranges approaching ripeness

Olives: Our group of four Kalamata olives have reached

maturity and this year have produced heavily. A group of
members, under the guidance of Russell Hudson, gathered
recently to harvest and pickle the crop. In a couple of months,
we should have some delicious olives! Come to think of it, there
are a great many fruiting olive trees all over Barwon Heads, and
many of the fruits seem to go to waste. How about getting
together with your neighbours and having an olive-pickling day?
What a fine community activity!
Olives ready to harvest

Garden Room:
This former classroom is used for various meetings
and is available for community groups to use for
meetings, classes and other gatherings, for a very
modest fee. At present we have quite a few times
available for during the week. If your organisation is
interested, please contact Russell Mitten on
0439061475, and we will set up a time for an
inspection.

New seedlings under nurture

in the plastic house

Espaliered apple, beginning to take shape

Espaliered apple trees: Last year we began

an effort to train a group of a dozen apples
along our eastern boundary. Most of the trees
have thrived, and are beginning to respond to
our efforts to re-shape them. It is about time
for their annual prune and shaping. It certainly
takes some courage to remove so many
branches, but the intended shape is beginning
emerge. Eventually the trees will maintain
their modified shape without the support of
the trellis.

Propagation House: 18 months ago we re-covered

our plastic house and enhanced the automatic
watering system. While we have some members
regularly using the facility to raise seedlings, we
have plenty of scope to accommodate more. The
fledgling plants receive a controlled watering every
2nd day, and enjoy the warmth of the plastic house,
even in winter. Why not join and enjoy using this
facility?

MEET
THE AUTHORS - Sunday
September 20th, 2015

Following the huge success of Barwon Heads Arts

Council's Meet the Anzac Authors in April this year, we
are now back to what looks likely becoming an annual
event with our September fixture of Meet the Authors for
2015. We have an exciting Trio of authors to present on
September 20th. The first is Dr. Don Watson , who will
talk about his latest and much talked about book The
Bush, which has recently taken out several prestigious
prizes. These include two Indie Awards as overall
winner and also for non-fiction; the NSW Premier's

Book of the Year, and the Douglas Stewart Prize for

Nonfiction.
The Bush is causing much interest and a little
controversy and it is said that 'no-one who reads this
book will look at this country the same way again'. It is
also said to unravel many myths about the Australian
bush. The second author , Alan Gold, will discuss his
intriguing book Bell of the Desert, the story of an English
woman Gertrude Bell and her fascinating years in Iraq
in the times of her friend T.E.Lawrence. A film of this
book is shortly to be released starring Nicole Kidman.
Gertrude Bell was considered one of the most powerful
women in England in her day. Born in 1868, and after
reading history at Oxford, she became an archaeologist
and the rest as they say Our third speaker Trisha
Dixon Burkitt will talk about her most recent book
Adagio: Living and Gardening Mindfully. Her research
into the life and landscape designs of Edna Walling has
resulted in a number of books, articles and a
consultancy on the famous landscape artist. Trisha also
leads Garden and Photography Tours of Europe on a
regular basis and we hope she will tell us about those
also. She also leads tours to the island of Hydra in the
Greek Islands for photographic and literary workshops.
She is a pilot and has been a presenter on ABC TV.
Trisha will be a delightful way to wind up what is shaping
up to being a fascinating and illuminating day! Bookings
will open in July.

What is happening to the vacant kindergarten in Clifford
Parade? Will it become a community arts hub?
A feasibility study will soon be undertaken by an
independent consultant to determine the need for a
community arts hub in Barwon Heads. You will be invited
to attend a community workshop to discuss your ideas
and aspirations for a community hub in Barwon Heads.
To register for this forum - please email us at
barwonheadsartscouncil@live.com and we will make
sure that you are invited! We cannot stress enough how
important it is for the community to get on board to
support this hub. We want to hear from you.

COGG 2015/2016 BUDGET

City of Greater Geelong has allocated a further $15,000
in its latest budget to complete a feasibility study for a
Community Arts Hub in Barwon Heads. This brings the
total funds allocated to $30,000. We would like to

Winter is the time of

year when younger
hooded plovers
disperse from their
natal beaches and
congregate with both
sub-adult and adult
hooded plovers.
This explains why you will often see flocks of
around a dozen or more hooded plovers on our
local beaches at this time.
Lake Victoria, Point Lonsdale is a well known
local flocking site and in recent weeks there has
been a sizable flock of 37 hoodies observed at
nearby Freshwater Lake, .
This flock comprises at least 15 juveniles/sub

adults which is good to see. Of these birds, 12 were

flagged: flagged juveniles included: LB from the
Bass Coast, YLF 11 & YLF 17 from Phillip Island &
VM from Moggs Creek.
The banded adults observed were 'locals' : AD, EL,
HY, LY, NZ, PL & PT plus PE originally from the
Bass Coast.
Thanks Geoff Gates for reporting these
observations and for the excellent photos.
If you are lucky enough to spot a flagged hoodie
and to read it's flag, please report your sighting via
email to:

community groups. This is the tenth year that the

program has been running. The environment day
engages all year 8 students to learn about the
importance of their local environment and some of
the impacts and challenges it faces. Over 140
students from across the Bellarine took part.
The Borrow the Bag

Barwon Heads

recently gained
momentum with the
involvement of year 8
Bellarine Secondary
College students
contributing to bag
making during the
environment day
program.
Students
gained understanding of
why it is important to
source and use reusable
shopping bags rather
than taking the easy
option of a plastic bag. Students contributed to the
making of reusable bags that will now be made
available free to the Barwon Heads community
when shopping.

WHALES & CITIZEN SCIENCE
A new citizen science project, Two Bays Whales
Project, has been initiated by the Two Bays Team.
This project is calling for community to report their
sightings of Humpback Whales and Southern
Right Whales within Port Phillip Bay, Westernport
Bay and from Barwon Heads to Inverloch coast.
For sightings along our coastline, the Two Bays
contact number is 0438 399 676, or visit the
Facebook page: 'twobayswhales'.
It is worth noting as whale spotting season
approaches that since Barwon Coast has been
recording wildlife sightings for our coastline the
earliest record of a whale sighted along Ocean
Grove Main Beach was May 2011. Most sightings
start to occur June, however anytime now
realistically we could start to see whales. I
encourage you all to keep a look out for these large
majestic creatures as they travel past our shores.
LITTERING
Barwon Coast staff responded to another very
disappointing littering / dumping incident at the
Bluff on Saturday 13th of June; where the contents
of someone's shed had been thrown into the
vegetation.
Everyone has the ability to do something if they
witness littering on any scale through the EPA's
online Report Litter page or their Mobile
App. It is a simple process that EPA has
noted results in over 90% of penalty notices
being paid.
Barwon Coast encourages all members of
the public to report dumping at any time so
we can respond as soon as is practical.
I encourage you to contact Barwon Coast
to discuss any issues related to coastal
management in our region by phoning

BARWON HEADS BOWLING CLUB

18 Geelong Road Barwon Heads 5254 3124

Deep into winter and all the smart people have gone
north, but our bowls numbers are still very good.
For the next few weeks we welcome Ocean Grove
Bowling Club to our green as their synthetic gets a
facelift. Its great to see the green full and everyone
happy with the way it performs.
Work around the green is progressing well and will
be a big improvement when completed.
The AGM has come and gone with Ray Charman
again the man to lead the Club as President and
Sandra Green is again Vice President.
We welcome both Ian and Karla Turner to the Board
and know theyll be great assets for the Club.
Karla takes over as Secretary with Anne Way as
assistant.
We wish all officebearers well and know the Club is in
good hands.
As we so often say, anyone interested in giving bowls
a try just call at the Club on a bowls day and someone will look after you. We are always looking for new members and bowlers.
Until next time, good bowling.

The basketball community has

been abuzz with the recent NBA
titles with the Golden State
Warriors winning the
championship series 4-2 against
the Cleveland Cavaliers.
My two young boys have been checking the
highlights each day and following the Australian
players, Andrew Bogut and Matthew Dellavedova
and dreaming of the day they too will play in the
NBA! It made me research where these 2 Aussies
boys have come from and I was interested to read
that Bogut 7 ft (213cm) aged 30 was born to
Croatian immigrants in Melbourne and as a 15year-old, he was cut from the Victoria junior state
representative team. That experience apparently
drove him to improve. Dellavedova 6ft 4in
(193cm) aged 24 was born and raised in
Maryborough, Victoria. Both spent time at the
Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. So
learnings for my boys are: they should keep trying

even if they do not get into the A team, living in a

small town is not a hindrance to your dreams and
they will need to go through a serious growth
spurt!!

This social event and opportunity for

all teams to get together will be on
Saturday 12th September at 2pm. We
will have medals for each of our
dedicated players and one player per
team will be awarded the Bendigo
B a n k Te a m P l a y e r Aw a r d a s
determined by the coach.
Next Talking Heads will have the dates for the
AGM and Summer sign up/team selection
process. Also our new email address is
seagullsbasketballclub@gmail.com and dont
forget to follow our Facebook page for news and
photos.
Go Seagulls.

Barwon Heads Cricket Club

Let's be honest, we all look

forward to the monthly offerings
in Talking Heads, but we don't
always give the consumption of
the collected wisdoms of the
contributors to the village
chronicle our full attention.

Quickly passing our eyes over it while waiting for the kids
outside the school or scanning over the tome while in the
W.C on a Sunday morning hardly allows our mental
facility to properly digest the information presented here.
This month we have a little information to go through. It'll
become clearer next month why it is so important for you
to pay attention to this stuff, but if you're not in a good
place to read this, then get your affairs in order to the
point where you are able to give your full attention to this
column for the time it normally takes to get through it and
I'll wait, because there's a bit to go through.

Ok then. Ready?
Good.
As mentioned in these pages many times, the BHCC is a
junior cricket club with a senior section. In fact in the
most recently completed season it was junior teams
alone that carried the clubs finals aspirations, and with
some great success.

It is with great pleasure that the

BHCC is in a position to announce
all of our JUNIOR COACHES for
Season 2015-2016.

Firstly, Dan Vella has joined the committee with a

view to becoming Junior Coordinator in season 201516. Dan will bring with him a wealth of experience in
governance and conflict resolution.
In under 17s, Paul Liistro who is a Level 1
accredited cricket coach, WWC accredited, Graduate of
Cricket Victoria SEDA program, is the Current BHCC B
grade captain and the BPCA junior representative
coach, will take the reins as coach. In Under 15s, Matt

High who holds a Level 2 accreditation as a cricket

coach, is also WWC accredited, is a current A & B grade

BHCC player, already a BHCC junior premiership coach
and BPCA junior representative coach will be in charge.
Ash Muir, holder of a Level 1 cricket coach
accreditation, is WWC accredited, is a Former Premier
Cricket 1st XI player and Melbourne Sub-district senior
coach as well as a current BHCC player will take charge
of Under 13 duties. Then there's Mark Slater who is
a Level 1 accredited cricket coach, Former Premier
Cricket 1st XI player at Geelong CC, St Joseph's CC 1st
XI player, BHCC A grade premiership player and just a
brilliant bloke and BBQ cook despite being a St Kilda
Footy Club tragic will look after Under 11s.
As usual Barwon Heads Community Cricket (under 9)
will see Michael Moulton in control. Michael's a

Level 1 accredited cricket coach, Former Brighton 1st XI

player, multiple BHCC A grade premiership player,
former BHCC A grade Captain and Coach, former
treasurer of the club and Senior Vice President.

As you can see all of these people have a

wealth of experience in coaching of junior and
senior teams, are correctly accredited as a
cricket coach and all have a great desire to see
both teams and individual players achieve
success as cricketers and all junior sections
will be supported by input from all senior
players in individual and group training drills.
The club is in an enviable position of having a wealth of
experienced and motivated senior coaches willing to
make the commitment to the development of our juniors.

Remember that the AGM is ahead of us on

Friday July 31st at Elliott Hall, AKA Barwon
Grove Golf Club AKA, The Tin Shed in
Sheepwash Rd behind the fire station. We'll be
gathering from 6:30pm for a 7pm start to
proceedings. If you have designs on being on
the committee for the next season it's a great
opportunity to get involved.
As always we're heading towards a new season and
readying ourselves for a huge tilt at success in all grades
and the club invites all to be as big a part of that as you
like.
Ok. That's as much concentration as I can ask for one
month. Thanks for your attention. Please remember to
flush and put the seat down.
More next month.

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

There was an old man called Nob,
Who pretended that he had a job,
Over breakfast and lunch,
Or a conference with brunch,
Always networking and stuffing his gob!
-He's the founding member of our club, the reason the
BHCC exists. Without Nev, there would be no BHCC.
Thanks Nev.
-Nev's a great networker as we all know, but the first day I
joined the BHCC he didn't realise I had lived almost over
the road from him for the past 6 years!

Age: the length of time that a person has lived or a

thing has existed.
Old: having lived for a long time; no longer young.
Legend: an extremely famous or notorious person,
especially in a particular field.
Combination of the three: Nev.
There has been a lot of talk amongst the folk in the BHCC
about urban legends: Flashy Man, Rasta, Breamy Man,
Magenta Man, The Mole and many more. But, the real
legend lives here in town. He rides with us regularly. This
man is the stalwart of our club. The original. The founding
member of our great club. Yes, I'm talking about the one
and only Neville Wright (well, one of the two Neville
Wrights of our wonderful town). Yes, that's him. The real
legend, as opposed to an urban legend, is Nev. AKA Nob,
Nifty, Poppa Nob, Neville. Recently Nev turned 60. He is
the oldest member of our group and his fitness continues to
improve and surprise. So, I asked the members of the
BHCC to give their thoughts or anecdotes on Nev, and
here are some of their responses....
-Wow, can this bloke talk. But, he's been a bit quieter since
Greg has joined the group.
-In the early days he'd listen to Radio National on the ride
because I think he was bored with what I had to say.
-Nev's Nectar is amazing. It's a shame he is always out of
stock!
-Any opportunity for a photo opportunity in that O2V gear.
-Bollards up!
-Anyone up for drinks at Beach House from 5 today - or is it
too windy? Neville Wright, 16 Jan, 2015

-I remember riding to work years ago to Ocean Grove and

this bloke used to ride to Queenscliff. We rode The
Narrows together a couple of times and I was impressed
at how much this guy could talk and that he rode all the
way to Queenscliff for work and back that afternoon.
Anyway, a few months later, I saw this bloke putting up his
large pole with a camera at the end of it. After a long chat,
he invited me to come for a morning ride with him and his
mates. I didn't think that I could get up so early OR ride all
the way to the windmill and back! Anyway, the rest is
history.
-He always falls asleep during the Tour de France nights.
He missed the whole tour that Cadel won. Unbelievable!
-Nev was a bit of a full forward in his time, up in the
Wimmera and when asked what sort of full forward he
was, a Tony Lockett or an Allen Jakovich type, he thought
about this for a brief second. Allen Jakovich! Played with
flair, loved a goal, loved a crowd, golden wavy mullett!
-My favorite recollection of speeches from the birthday
party was his children reciting that they never went on
holidays with Nev - instead, everything was an adventure!
I think that sums up the man.
-Don't ride that way it won't look any good on 'Strava'!
-Nev: ineffable, effervescent like a magnum of
champagne, shaken wildly then opened (and we are left
covered in joy and froth..), bonhomie on steroids and the
coif... (a minimal use of words can sometimes act as a
counterbalance to Nev's effusive and unrestrained
verbosity).
There was a kid in the Grampians called Neville,
Who was a real little devil,
He loved to play with his axe,

B2B: Bridge to Bridge

Between 6 and 8 BHCC riders will be riding from Sydney to
Barwon Heads riding over 1000 km in a week, aiming to
arrive in our famous town of Barwon Heads early April next
year. The main purpose of our ride is to raise money for
those in our community who need help. Our chosen charity
is 'Give Where You Live'. Standby for more information.

How Can YOU Help?

This is a really big job to organise, and we'd like some help from our locals. Apart from moral support and throwing in
a few dollars towards our nominated charity, we really need the following to ensure the event goes ahead and we
raise a load of money to help others.
1. mini bus to get the team to Sydney and as a support vehicle along the ride
2. bike trailer preferably fully enclosed and lockable for security
3. corporate sponsorship your company logo will appear on any offical stuff (if there is any).
If you can help, or if you know of someone else who can help, please contact me via email on
andymcneilly@me.com.
Maybe you have another wonderful idea of how you can help us to help others? If so, we would love to hear from you.

Ceramic Tiles

Out on the wood stacks,

But he took a kids finger off at the level.
-We always get quizzed on what type of bird that was on the
side of the road.........
Do you know what that was? asked Nev.
It was a crow, I replied.
Actually, it was an Australian Raven.
As the next question was coming out of my mouth, I knew I
should have said nothing, but I asked What's the
difference?
The key to the confusion is the fact that 'ravens and crows'
are not two distinct species, but actually about 40 (the
precise number is unclear as far as I know). These belong
to the genus Corvus, along with two Jackdaw species, and
the rook. Nine so-called raven species occur worldwide,
leaving around 30 'crow' species. The real question then is:
'is there an actual good reason that all these different bird
species are divided between 'ravens' and 'crows'? Well,
there is and I'll tell you.............
There was an old man called Nifty,
Who was nearly ten years past fifty,
He bathes in his own honey,
Then rolls in his money,
Then Instagram's himself looking shifty.
-Did you know Nev's bike is a 'Scott'? Have you heard of a
bloke called Scott Neville? 'Scott' no mates and 'Neville'
will.
-Nev has made the transformation from MAMIL (Middle
Aged Man in Lycra) to VOMIT (Very Old Man in Tights)
-The concept of going on a holiday and not attending a
conference is beyond Nev!
-Nev is enjoying his status as the fastest 60 year old in
BHCC, at least until January when GH achieves the mark.
-"This app's not working - there are fewer riders out of a
morning than at any other time in our history!" Neville
Wright, 3 April, 2014
-He is prone to occasionally blowing up on the way back,
due to energy expended on chat.
There is an old man called Wright,
Whose life is very, very bright,
He loves it in his sauna,
Tucked away in the corner,
With Y-Fronts that could be more tight.
Thanks Nev. You are a true legend. We all love you heaps.
Nev for President of Barwon Heads.

By the time you read this article

we will be well and truly into the
second half of the season. Time
flies when your having fun.
Senior Footy

All divisions are producing great results. As of the 22nd June the
Under 16's are 2 games clear in second spot, Colts are sitting 7th
with 5 wins and 4 losses in Division 1, Reserves are undefeated 10
from 10 and the Seniors sit equal second with 8 wins and 2 losses.
Thursday nights are providing great entertainment for everyone the
place is a buzz.
After the bye weekend the Colts played St. Joseph's at home. After
an even first half the Joey's boys got on top after half time. They ran
away with a 53 point win. Best players: L. Holloway, B. Eddy, K.
Polley, B. Michell, J. Kinsey.
Grovedale at Grovedale was their next match. Down by 5 goals at
half time things weren't looking good. A second half resurgence
nearly got them over the line. At the final siren a goal separated
both sides. A great fight back but just couldn't get there. Best
players: J. Kinsey, P. Membrey, T. Croft, B. Ryan, D. Lewis.
Round 8 saw the Colts take on Ammo's. It wasn't one of their better
games, as we didn't seem to be focused. Keeping us scoreless in
the last quarter Ammo's ran over the top of us. Best players: C.
Balshaw, C. McKinnon, J. Kinsey, B. Eddy.
Round 9 we travelled into South Barwon looking to get our season
back on track. We had a good first half going into the long break 7
points up. We lost the plot in the 3rd quarter undisciplined play saw
us trail by 24 points at time which ended up being the final margin
as well. Best players: T. Croft, D. Hewitt, B. Michell, M. Brooks,
C. McKinnon.
The Reserves and Seniors travelled to Port after the bye weekend.
With a strong wind blowing the Ressies got away to a handy 23 point
lead at time. The game turned into a scrappy affair from then on,
the final result was a good 36 point win. Like the Ressies the
Seniors got away to a good start 4.14 in the first half kept Port in the
game. The second half produced a better brand of footy but we still
had trouble finding the big sticks. The final score of 11.29 gave us a
53 point win over a much improved Port.
Round 8 we welcomed Modda to Howard Harmer Oval. With a
blistering 7 goal first quarter the Ressies set the game up. Ten
players contributed to the 19 goals kicked with Corey Normington

0416 119240

www.talkingheadsmag.com

bagging 6. It was great to see Tommy Andrew crack it for his first
game.
In what was a tough game the Seniors got home by 24 points.
Leading all day the Headers seemed to be in control a 7 goal lead at
time put us in a good position. Injuries to Bucky and Dom
reduced our bench to 2 fit players. Modda made a late challenge
but thanks to a great game by Dizzy we held on to win.
Final game of the first round saw us travel to Ammo's. After a
relatively even 1st half the Ressies ran away with it in the second
half. The end result was a great 84 point thumping. Corey
Normington lead the way again with another bag of 6 goals.
Could the Seniors reproduce the Ressies result? In perfect
conditions the Seniors produced the best team effort with
Tim Wight dominating down back we had Ammo's measure. A 6
goal buffer at time had the visiting crowd pumped. In what turned
out to be a heart stopping last quarter the lead was reduced to 3
points when the final siren sounded.
Heading to Queenscliff to start the second half of the season we
were missing six of our players from last weeks encounter. Due to
our great player depth this year (no more pulling Swinno out of the
pub to fill in) both sides still had plenty of talent to work with.
The reserves got the day underway with a 14 goal to 2 goal first half.
The second half of footy was pretty ordinary with only 4 goals added
to our score. The 102 point win was still a great result. Scotty
Michell, Kyle Johannesen and Corey Normington all chipped in
with 4 goals a piece.
The Seniors looked in control from the first bounce but couldn't
relay it to the scoreboard. Tim Wight put in another cracker of a
game along with Bucky and Sam Evans who was playing his first
senior game after a 12 month lay-off. Unlike last week we finished
the game full of running, the 49 point margin at the final siren was
largely thanks to Marto who finished the day with 6.
The auction night held in the clubroom after the Queenscliff
game was a great night. Although numbers were down
everybody that attended had a fun night. We feel a bit short on what
we hoped but somewhere between 10-12k was generated on the
night. Thanks to all those that attended and a special thanks to the
volunteers who put in countless hours to make it happen.

Social Events for 2015

4th July - Club Ball
8th August - Ladies Day
9th August - Men's Health Day
21st August - Junior Disco

Junior Footy

After 10 rounds of junior football for season 2015 up to the weekend

of 13th June we see our 2 x U10's and 2 x U12's sides playing
excellent football week in week out in the new graded format for
2015, taking success and defeat in their stride and doing the
BHFNC proud in their efforts across the Geelong Region.
Our U14's and U16's teams are both in Division 2 and both are
doing a great job in representing the BHFNC in a very tough
division. The U14's with a team of 1st year players continue to play
footy that improves each week and have an extremely bright future
ahead of them. They also have our only girl playing in Ruby Winter.
Well done Ruby. (I hear she is playing a bit better than brother Ben
this year )
Our U16's are up and running and if their form continues are a real
chance to play finals in 2015, again with a heap of 1st year players
mixed in with 2nd year players.
Congratulations to the following boys selected to train with the inter

league squads in their age groups: Archie Hildebrandt, Sam

Witherden, Flynn Young, Jack Bongiorno, Charlie Sprague,
Max Witherden, Nick Sutton, Noah Young, Zedekai Copland
and Zac Walter.
Thanks to all coaching staff, managers and match day helpers for
their efforts so far this season in helping kids play footy for the
BHFNC.

Netball

As we move into the second half of the season, the majority of the
Barwon Heads Netball teams are sitting in very favourable positions
on the ladder which, dare I say, could mean a very busy and
exciting September for our community. While our Under 11 teams
don't play finals, the Saturday team is presently undefeated and,
with another two teams playing Friday nights, competition is
certainly going to be tight in the junior ranks in the coming seasons.
Both Under 13 teams are in the top 4 in the competition. Tim Ford,
who has taken on the Under 13 Div 1 team is doing an amazing job
and we are loving his enthusiasm. Similarly, Division 2, coached by
Lee Scott and Colleen McKewan, is in 4th place and the girls are
looking solid.
Both Under 15 Saturday sides are coached by Simone Wallace
and Lauren Frew. After a shaky start, the Division 1 girls are
rallying and now rest comfortably in 3rd place. Sim and Frewy are
confident they will get into 2nd in the coming weeks and thus have a
second chance in finals when they come. The Div 2 girls are also
going well and look likely for a finals berth too should they maintain
their current form.
Under 17 Div 1, under the tutelage of two of our A Grade players,
Julia Mitchell and Millie Leahy are also faring well in 2nd place.
Julia and Millie don't believe the girls are even in 2nd gear yet so we
are hopeful of more exciting times to come here. Marnie Stevens
is doing an amazing job with the Division 2 team. There are not
really any surprises that these girls are in the 4 and they also are
going from strength to strength each week.
Our Under 19 girls haven't quite had the season they would have
liked; however, there is no doubt that the girls are enjoying their
game. Likewise the Friday night Under 15 and Under 13 teams are
clocking a few wins but, importantly, they are playing some very
solid netball.
Our Senior teams are also travelling well. While Mel and the girls
in A Grade would definitely like to see a few more actual wins on the
board, the margins are becoming more competitive each week.
Fielding probably the youngest team in A Grade by a long shot, the
prospects for the future are very exciting. B Grade looks certain to
be playing finals this season, although after a wake-up call against a
very sharp Ammos team, Mel, Son and the girls won't be resting on
their laurels in the second half of the season. There is still work to
be done. Likewise, D Grade were undefeated until the Ammos
match and Bec will be working the girls tirelessly in the latter part of
the season to avoid a repeat 2014 Grand Final Scenario. C Grade
still has some work to do after a couple of disappointing losses that
really should have been wins. They will need to rally in the second
half of the season, and with Sandy Goddard fully focussed just on
the coaching role, finals is a possibility.
Junior development is really beginning to pay dividends in the club.
Maggie Leahy, Madi Finn, Keely Babb and Georgia Ryan are all
playing consistently in the A/B teams and Molly Gray and Jordan
Koster in C Grade. All girls are still Under 17 players as well.
Similarly, we have a squad of Under 15 girls who have been
selected to join training with the seniors and the girls are loving it as
well as learning lots.
Stay posted and our netball teams are well worth following in the
second half of the season.
