Fall 2012

Due: 10/25/11
CE 40270 Reinforced Concrete Design
SAP2000 Assignment (HW 7)

Use SAP2000 to do an analysis of a reinforced concrete building.

PART ONE: Create the building model
Use a portal frame with 2 stories, 5 bays, story height of 14 ft and bay width of 26 ft
Concrete compressive strength of 5 ksi and reinforcement yield stress of 50 ksi
Beam details (use the same dimensions for all the beams)
o Assume initial width equals 12 inches
Depth = 1.5 * Width (rectangular section)
o Concrete cover to rebar center will always be 2 inches
Column details (use the same dimensions for all columns)
o Rectangular: 16 inches by 16 inches
o Use 8 # 9s arranged in a rectangular pattern with lateral ties
o Concrete cover to rebar center will always be 2 inches
o Columns do not need to be designed, only checked
Building is at a comfortable 70 F
Loadings (ONLY use 1.2 DL + 1.6 LL Load Combination)
o Dead Load
Self-Weight + 0.08 kips per inch
o Live Load
0.23 kips per inch
Design for all 12 live load patterns (attached)
Analysis
o Use ACI 318-08 Design Code option in SAP2000 (or most recent ACI design
code in a previous SAP 2000 version)
o Do not run the Modal case
Iterate the beams width dimension by 2 inches (keep in mind that Depth should always equal
1.5*Width) until you do not receive any O/S messages on your members. O/S indicates that the
load is too much for the current beam dimensions or that the beam is not wide enough to hold the
required steel amount in one row. You do not need to check . If you take care of O/S errors,
SAP2000 will take care of the design according to the code you selected.
PART TWO: Design for an extreme damage condition
Remove the left column on the first floor.
Iterate the beams width dimension by 2 inches (keeping in mind that Depth=1.5*Width)
until you do not receive any O/S errors (including O/S errors on columns).

Due: 10/25/11
CE 40270 Reinforced Concrete Design
SAP2000 Assignment (HW 7)

DISCUSSION:
Part One:
Are the live load pattern arrangements logical? Would you suggest more?
How could the design of this building be improved? What is missing?
By looking at the axial diagrams, shear diagrams, bending moment diagrams,
displacements, and reactions for load case A, give specific reasons why your SAP model
seems reasonable (i.e., do your diagrams, displacements, and reactions suggest that you
input your load case correctly, is equilibrium satisfied, etc.).
Part Two:
How do your new beam dimensions and steel requirements compare to your old
(comparing PART TWO to PART ONE)? Is this a feasible scenario?
SUBMITTAL:
Email the following as attachments with subject line SAP2000 Assignment to
swilli19@nd.edu by 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 27.
1. SAP2000 files (save Part One and Two as different files)
Please unlock your model before sending
Only send the model file, not the results
2. PDF document containing:
Beam dimensions for part I and II
Discussion for part I and II
QUESTIONS:
If you get stuck or have questions on any part of your SAP model please email your question
AND SAP2000 file to swilli19@nd.edu.
