 As the Australian film director Peter Weir once did in Dead Poet's Society, Dabbs
commandeers the Latin aphorism "carpe diem" and has his congregation chanting back,
"Seize the day". Planetshakers is an offshoot of Adelaide's Paradise Church, from which the
Family First political party grew.6

Like Hillsong, it is an Assemblies of God church, part of the growing Pentecostal movement.
It is headed by the charismatic husband and wife team of Russell and Sam Evans and is
rapidly building a congregation in Melbourne Town Hall based on high-energy praise and
worship.

This is the second year the church, which says it has no local ambitions, has brought its road
train to Sydney.

By the end of the month, more than 20,000 young Christians around the country will have
moshed for Jesus. 7

“For millennia humans have been dancing in the wilderness in ritual and in ceremonial rites of
passage. In many cultures such as the Bushmen of the Kalahari, we can find techniques of
trance dancing, which elevate them into ecstatic, altered states of consciousness. When
the Bushmen enter this state, it is reported that such an incredible rush of energy surges
through their bodies that they cannot help but fall to the ground. This has been compared to the
kundalini rising- the dormant energy at the base of the spine that can be awakened through

The second common thread to these kinds of meetings is the very pagan or voodoo sounding
drum beats and their relationship to bringing people into trance states or altered states of
consciousness. 10

David Cloud states in his article “IS THERE A CONNECTION BETWEEN ROCK MUSIC
AND VOODOO OR AFRICAN PAGANISM?”, that the modern rock and roll music industry
did indeed have its roots in the African tribal culture:

“The incessant, poly-rhythms pounded out on cylindrical drums [by African tribal’s] is the
catalyst of rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and today’s heavy metal. It is amazing that the
reactions we see at a contemporary rock concert are an exact copy of what happened in the
Pinkster celebrations [black festivals in New York] or at Place Congo [black slave dancing in
New Orleans] during the Antebellum Period. Any analysis that denies this fact renders the
church impoverished in its understanding of the African connection to the rock movement of the
20th century. (1)

What happens when someone is exposed to this kind of tribal drumming for any period of time?
“Studies have shown that vibrations from rhythmic sounds have a profound effect on brain
activity. In shamanic traditions, drums were used in periodic rhythm to transport the shaman
into other realms of reality. The vibrations from this constant rhythm affected the brain in a
very specific manner, allowing the shaman to achieve an altered state of mind and journey
out of his or her body.” (2) 11

This letter came from a Catholic friend of mine from England.

They seek power as leaders and false shepherds to dominate, enslave, and rob Christians of the
truth, freedom and money. They come out of the "submission and shepherding" movement of the
1970s which robbed Christians of freedom to choose what they did with their bank accounts,
cheque books, who they married, if they married, where they lived, which other Christians they
could talk to, what books they could read, when and if they could go on holiday, where their
children went to school, what clothes they could buy, whether they could drink Coca Cola, Pepsi
Cola, tea, coffee, or have sugar and salt. They were truly evil and preyed on sincere trusting
Christians.
Catholic Mystics were very different.

The acknowledged leading one is Anthony of Padua (or if you are a Catholic, St Anthony).
He took vows of poverty and chastity as he acknowledged he was to serve and not be served by
the sheep in The Body of Christ. He turned down great wealth daily. He refused to use his power
from God to get sex or money.

Moreover, he was also the greatest opponent of heresy. He said out loud The Nicene Creed in
EVERY service he took. This emphasizes The Trinity, Jesus is Divine, Jesus created The World,
Jesus was God and Man born of a Virgin for our salvation from sin, Jesus was tortured and
crucified and rose from the dead, Jesus will come again to judge the living and the dead, The
Holy Spirit is a Person not a force, The Scriptures are true and trustworthy, The Church must be
Holy, baptism is necessary for the forgiveness of sin.

Anthony of Padua was much better known for his teaching of the above than for the thousands of
miracles and healings God did through him. He set the record for miracles but this was dwarfed
by the hours he spent calling people to sound doctrine, to sincere repentance, to prayer etc

He spent hours each day in prayer and fasted completely every second day.

He was not interested in wealth, power, fame but in people finding Jesus Christ as Lord and
sticking to sound doctrine.

This mystic denounced those who claimed their new mystical revelation or visits from Angels
added anything to what The Apostles appointed by Jesus Christ taught in The Scriptures
(although he held to 2 Thessalonians 2 v 15 which says we must hold on to their written and oral
teachings).

Anthony of Padua would have declared Peter Wagner, Rick Joyner, Bob Jones, Patricia King,
Che Ahn, William Branham, Todd Bentley, and Gerald Coates as heretics and Nicolatians.

His was a Gospel of repentance and seeking God's Mercy for sin.

St Francis of Assisi also turned down wealth, power and sex to follow Jesus Christ. He was born
into wealth but gave it up to preach to the poor, vulnerable, powerless, weak, etc
He preached giving to the poor not the poor giving to rich multi-millionaire evangelists and
False Apostle-Prophets.

His Mystical experiences made him much more orthodox as regards The Trinity, Divinity of
Jesus Christ, Second Coming, Cross of Jesus Christ, Virgin Birth etc.

He denounced false Mystics whose meetings with Angels took them away from these truths.

Patrick, better known as St Patrick in Ireland, was even more orthodox as a result of his miracles
and mystical experiences. He denounced the false mystics who departed from True Teaching on
The Trinity of which he was the greatest defender.

More recently Padre Pio was ultra orthodox about The Trinity, Divinity of Jesus Christ, and
Cross of Jesus Christ etc

The Catholic Church has a policy based on wisdom to mistrust and test Mystics and side with
caution.

If and only if they prove they are beyond doubt Trinitarian, hold to The Nicene Creed, do not
teach New Revelation over-ruling The Bible and teaching of the original Apostles of The Bible,
only then do they embrace them.

The Catholic Church happily suspended Padre Pio from public teaching while he was carefully
investigated. If he had failed the testing, he would have been kicked out. He accepted the
wisdom of the policy and did not accuse people of being heresy hunters.

The Catholic Church suspended a Cardinal from Zambia about ten years ago. He was doing more
miracles than anyone in the world. He was setting people free from demons. But they suspended
and tested him. He ran off and joined The Moonies!

Do not despise the wisdom The Catholic Church has shown concerning Todd Bentley types.
Beware the heretics and Nicolatians. True Mystics are humble and happily submit to
investigation, challenge, scrutiny AND correction!

The Peter Wagner and Todd Bentley gang are false mystics and The Catholic Church would not
let any of them become priests.
