Attempting Quizzes
You will find the quizzes in some of the topics in the study desk (some of these quizzes will
appear later on as you progress in your study).
To attempt a quiz, you need to click on the relevant icon for the quiz. You are allowed a
maximum of 2 attempts. Most questions are of multiple-choice type with a few questions of
other types such as filling the blanks etc. Once you have selected the right answer for each
quiz, click on Save Answer. When you have completed click on Finish to submit your work.
You will get the scores and correct answers including some feedback immediately. You can
also review your assessment scores later on for each attempt by clicking on the Assessment
icon on the top tool bar and navigating your way to the relevant quiz.
Many students (both external and on-campus) students have found these quizzes to be a very
useful self-assessment tool to check your understanding of the basic concepts in this course. I
hope you will make the best use of it!

Pre-requisite course
It is expected that you have completed a course in the design of reinforced concrete structures
at an undergraduate level. Prestressed concrete is in a way, an extension of the design of
reinforced concrete structures; hence you need to be familiar with the basic design of reinforced
concrete structures.

Assessment
Assessment in this course is by way of three assignments totalling 100%. As per the course
specification, you are required to achieve least 50% overall in the three assessments in order
to eligible for a pass in the course.
Discussions/Quizzes (25% worth) will consist the following, which will be ongoing
throughout the semester:
1. Attempting online quizzes (15%)
2. Participation in discussions topics (10%)
Assignment 1 (25% worth) will consist of a minor design task to check understanding of
basic design concepts (25%)
Assignment 2 (50% worth) will represent a detailed design of a prestressed concrete
deck/beam structure.
Studying for and completing these assignments will represent a significant part of your total
workload in this course. They have been designed to focus you on the particular material which
is of key importance within the course.

CIV8802 Advanced Prestressed Concrete

Important advice
The text references are important to get a good grasp of the basic concepts of prestressed
concrete. Your first objective should be to get an understanding of the methods of prestressing
and of the qualitative behaviour of prestressed beams. Next you need to appreciate that in
prestressed concrete, the design requirements are more complex than with other types of
members. In particular it is necessary to check stresses not just at the final limit state loading
condition but also at different stages during construction. Also you need to appreciate that in
designing a prestressed beam it is necessary not only to determine the necessary number of
prestressing strands but also the jacking force that must be applied to these strands.
The latter modules will cover miscellaneous topics including recent advancement in prestressed
concrete. These topics include the design and construction of externally post-tensioned bridges
and grouting issues in bonded tendons that is being the current topic of discussion in the
prestressed industry.

Course evaluation
Feedback from students studying USQ courses is very valuable to the university. There will be
information available in the study desk on how to access student evaluation. This link can be
found under the Useful Links at the top of the study desk page.
