They’re not nearly as com-
mon on cedar elms as they
are on pecans.
Spraying is of no benefit
since the adult insect is
there only a few minutes.
Rake and discard the fallen
twigs to break their life cy-
cle. They may not be as bad
in future years, especially
on cedar elms.
Dear Neil: If I use Sevin
dust on my cucumbers and
squash to kill the young
squash bugs, do I have to
worry about the insecticide
getting into the vegetables
I’m about to eat?
Sevin is not systemic, so
it does not enter the fruits’
tissues.
Actually, if you’re using a

June 29, from 3 to
5 p.m. at the Extension of-
fice located at 206 S. State

This two-hour course is
highly recommended for
all food service employees
to help promote the service
of safe food.
The course is a basic over-
view of food safety prac-
tices that are necessary to
ensure safe food is served
at your establishment.

redtips and Indian haw-
thorns are dying. Both are
developing small spots
on their leaves. Next, the
branches become almost
bare. Fungicides don’t seem
to help. What can I do?
You’re describing Ento-
mosporium fungal leaf spot.
It has been epidemic on
redtip photinias all across
the South for the past 20
years. Unfortunately, fun-
gicides really don’t help, as
you’ve discovered.
Sad as it is, you need to
figure your replacement
plants and start heading
that direction. As for In-
dian hawthorns, the same
disease attacks them, but it
isn’t nearly as widespread.
Still, when it hits, it’s hard
to reverse. It’s just a dead
end for plants that come
down with it.
Dear Neil: I recently was
given some esperanza plants
from family in South Texas.
Where would be the best
place to plant them? Will
they grow in shade? How
long do they live?
Esperanza, including the
selection ‘Gold Star,’ need
full sun to do their best.
They’re nice in large patio
pots or even in the ground,
although they will not sur-
vive winter temperatures
very far into the 20s.
Dear Neil: I have a live
oak we planted three years
ago. It’s about 20 feet tall.
This year, its leaves are pale
green, and the veins are
dark green. I put fertilizer
stakes with iron around it
two months ago, but it still
looks sick. Other live oaks
on our property look fine.
Any suggestions?

follow their age. At age 63, what should

Dear Good Eater,
Just as our body changes as we age,
so too should our diet. Research tells
us that as the years pile up, we need to
consume fewer calories but more nu-
trients – and that’s not always easy to
do.
Getting started
It’s important to note that there’s no
“one-size-fits-all” or “age-specific” diet
out there. Your weight, gender, activity
level, health status and age should all
be factored into what you eat.
At www.mypyramid.gov you can de-
velop your own healthy eating plan by
plugging in your personal information
into their online tools. But in the mean
time, here are some dietary tips that
all seniors should know.
Eat fewer calories
As we age, we tend to be less active,
our bodies lose muscle and our metab-
olism slows. As a result, we need fewer
and fewer calories in order to main-
tain our weight. It’s estimated that our
calorie requirements drop by as much
as 20 percent between the ages of 20
and 60.
Focus on fiber
A fiber-rich diet can help lower cho-

NHS rocketry team earns 14th spot in nation
Northwest High School’s engineer-
ing team blasted its way to the top in
the national Team America Rocketry
Challenge (TARC) held in Manassas,
Va., May 16.
The team, consisting of juniors Ty-
ler Olson, Nick Hooper and Jacob
Martinez and freshman Luke Sloni-
ger, ranked 14th among the 100 na-
tional qualifying teams.
“We had a very good day at the Team
America Rocketry Challenge finals,
despite a very cool, drizzly morning,
thunderstorms in the afternoon, and
competition from 99 other rocketry
teams from across the country,” said
Wayne Day, engineering teacher and
rocketry club sponsor.
“We were ranked 20th after the first
round, which garnered Northwest an
invite from NASA to join them in the
NORTHWEST
Student Launch Initiative program.
The guys improved their ranking to
14th in the nation after the second
round.”
Only 25 high schools a year are
invited to participate in the NASA
Student Launch Initiative (SLI), in
which students design, build and test
reusable rockets to reach an altitude
of 1 mile.
In winning one of the top spots
in the national TARC competition,
Northwest’s team earned a place
in NASA’s SLI launch at Marshall
Space Flight Center in Huntsville,
Ala., in the spring.
This is the second year that a team
from Northwest High School has
placed in the national competition.
Last year, an NHS team placed 32nd
in the nation.
This year, student teams were
asked to design, build and launch a
model rocket to an altitude of 750
feet with a flight time of 45 seconds
and a raw-egg payload situated hori-
zontally to mimic the position of an
astronaut.
The egg had to return to earth
unbroken in order for the launch to
qualify. About 7,000 middle and high
school students took part in the qual-
ifying rounds of competition.
A “Chili’s Night” fundraiser along
with donations from the Dallas Area
Rocket Society and Career and Tech-
nical Education helped offset stu-
dents’ travel expenses.

Stripers and Hybrid Stripers — With twice the state
wide limit and a natural spawn in the Red and Washita Riv-
ers each spring, Texoma has to rate at the top of the list for
sheer numbers of stripers. Scores of striper guides have made
good livings here through the years exposing their clients to
the great striper fishing. But, Whitney is also a great striper
fishery and, even though the stripers here are stocked and not
as numerous as Texoma, the average size of fish landed tends
to be a bit larger.
For hybrid stripers, Lake Cooper is at the top of the list and
Tawakoni, Ray Hubbard and Richland Chambers run a close
second.
Crappie — Lakes Navarro Mills and Limestone provide
some of the best crappie fishing in the state. They share the
number one spot as my favorite, but Cedar Creek, Lavon, Rich-
land Chambers and little Coffee Mill Lake in Northeast Texas
and Houston County Lake near Crockett are great places to
dunk a minnow for good eating papermouths.
There you have my take on the best places to fish in Texas.
I can almost guarantee you already have your personal favor-
ites. We’re blessed with great fishing in the Lone Star State.
So, pick a species, then a lake and “Go Get em’!
Luke’s Outdoor Tip of the Week
When fishing near bottom for catfish, try placing a small
floater about six inches up from the hook. Here’s how to rig:
Place an egg sinker on your line, and then tie a swivel below.
Next, attach an 18 inch leader to the bottom of the swivel. At-
tach the small float six inches above the hook. This rig floats
keeps the bait suspended a few inches up from bottom, making
it much easier for catfish to position the bait in their mouth.
This rig, nicknamed the “Santee Rig,” was originally designed
for drift fishing but it’s equally effective when fishing station-

While many women have come to believe that an itch in the genital
area is automatically assumed to be a yeast infection, this is hardly
the case. In fact, as women age and estrogen production declines after
menopause, they become increasingly prone to a number of conditions
that irritate vulvar skin. For instance, an estimated one in 30 older
women experience the inflammatory skin disorder known as lichen
sclerosus, which is especially common in women with psoriasis. While
itching is usually the first symptom, visual examination usually reveals
white (sometimes crinkly or shiny) patches as well as red areas and
tears (due to scratching). Regardless of how mild symptoms may be,
this skin disorder must be properly diagnosed and treated.
