VOLTAGE-DIVIDER COMMON-EMITTER AMPLIFIER

OBJECTIVES
1. To analyze the parameters and characteristics of different types of voltage-divider
emitter (common-emitter) amplifier.
2. To decide which type is most suited for most applications.

PROCEDURE
1. Calculate the following for the circuit 0f Figure 1: IE, IC, VC, VCE, ZIN, ZO, Av, and
Vo. Set IE=Ic

2. Set up the circuit of Figure 1. Measure and draw the output voltage.
WARNING: Always turn on DC supply before the function generator. Also, turn
off the function generator before the DC supply.

3. Measure the input and output impedance of the circuit of figure 1. Follow the
techniques described in the previous experiment.
4. Compare your computed values for Zin, Zo, and Vo with measured values in steps
2&3.
5. Bypassed RE of circuit in Figure 1 with a 1F capacitor as shown in Figure 2.
Compute Zin, Zo, Av, and Vo.

9. Set up the circuit of Figure 3. This is the split (swamp0 emitter amplifier. Measure
the output voltage, Zin, and Zo. Draw the output voltage.

10. Compare your calculated values for Zin, Zo and output voltage with measured
values in step 9.
11. Turn off signal generator.
12. Turn off power supply.

QUESTIONS TO PONDER
1. Compute the maximum output voltage w/o distortion of circuit in Figure 1.
Compare it with your measured Vo. Does your waveform has distortion? Why?

2. The maximum voltage w/o distortion bypassed emitter amplifier is 8.54 Vpp.
Compare it with your calculated Vo. Does your measured output waveform has
distortion? Why?

3. Compute the maximum voltage without distortion of split-emitter amplifier


shown in Figure 3 and compare it with your computed Vo. Does your output
waveform has distortion?

4. Make a comparison among the three types of voltage divider emitter amplifier
with respect to their voltages, waveforms, Zin, Zo and Av.
5. With proper design for each types of voltage divider emitter amplifier, which type
is more advantageous?

6. Summarize the characteristics of common emitter amplifier in terms of Zin, Zo,


Av, & phase relationship.
