THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE / PAST OF BE

ORIENTACIONES
This is the sith week and You have reviewed many
topics.

Well start with the use of Verb To be in Past (WASWERE) and the simple Past tense.
You have to remember the spelling rules to make

sentences using the regular Verbs.


There is a list with the Irregular Verbs, you can join them
in groups to memorize easily.

WAS WERE ( QUESTIONS )


To make questions you only have to put Verb to Be in past
first then the subject pronoun.

THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE


The Simple Past Tense expresses an action which happened
at a specific time in the past and is now finished.
Look at some of the time expressions found with this tense:
Last day / last Saturday / last week / last month / last year /
last summer.
Two hours ago / four days ago / three weeks ago / one month
ago / ten years ago.
Yesterday / yesterday morning / yesterday afternoon /
yesterday evening.
In 1976 / in 2002 / when I left school / when I was young

THE SPELLING OF REGULAR VERBS :


a. The normal rule add -ed to the base form of the verb.

b. When the verbs end in -e , just add -d.

THE SPELLING OF REGULAR VERBS :


c.

In verbs of one syllable, with one written vowel + one


written consonant, the consonant is doubled ( Verbs
ending in one stressed vowel + one consonant )

But cooked / looked / booked ( there are two vowels )


The consonant is not doubled if it is y or w .

d. Verbs that end in a consonant + y change to -ied :

My mother worked at the supermarket full time last year.

The plane left at 8.00 oclock in the morning.

Somebody climbed through a window last night.

He had a stomachache last Sunday.
You brought a lot of red sweaters last week.

They came back from Japan a month ago.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE: NEGATIVE FORM


They didnt understand the message.
You didnt arrive on time to the conference.
Henry didnt have enough time to share with his family.
Mike didnt give me all my books.
Ellen didnt find the best job for her.

Steve didnt go to the discotheque because he was sick.


Jane didnt switch off the lights of the garden.
Cinthya didnt remember her appointment with Peter.
They didnt catch the main idea of the new ad.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE: INTERROGATIVE FORM


Did you go to the theater yesterday?

o Focus on the Past tense and the formation of the sentences.
o To make questions in Past tense we need the auxiliary DID
and for making negative form we use the auxiliary DIDNT.

o Use the Wh-questions to ask for precise information that


hapenned in the past.
o Pay attention to the use of Verb To be in Past and conjugate
it appropriately.
