here are two reasons why Lord Gaurga was given the name Nimi
by the neighborhood ladies: firstly, because He took birth under a neem
tree. The second reason was that prior to the birth of Mahprabhu, many
children of ac-mt were taken away by Yamarja (in other words,
they had died). Neem tastes bitter; thus the ladies concluded that if they
named this boy Nimi, which is the same as neem, then Yamarja would
not take the boy away as He would taste bitter to him.

hen you proceed further into the property, you turn left and enter
the main temple which has a 100 feet-high tower. There are three altars in
the temple: on the left altar stand r r Rdh-Mdhava, r Gaurga
Mahprabhu. On the central altar there are deities of Lord Caitanya as
Gaura Nryaa with His two wives, Viupriy and Lakmpriy, along
with a small four-armed deity of Adhokaja Viu. This deity was discovered
in 1934 by rla Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat hkura during the excavation
for the temple. Adhokaja Viu was the worshipable deity of Jaganntha
Mira, and He sits in front of the deity of Gaura Nryaa. He is black
in color and about eight inches tall with four arms holding the symbols
of Lord Viu: disc, club, conchshell, and lotus. On the sides of this deity
are goddesses Lakm-dev and Bh-dev. On the right altar is the Pacatattva, and in front of Them is a deity of Lord Jaganntha.

fter walking straight through the darana area you will see a small house
and a neem tree towards your right. Under this tree Lord Vivambhara took
birth on the evening of prim-tithi during the month of Phlguna (FebruaryMarch) in 1486. This present tree is said to be a cutting of the original tree. To
mark the birthplace there is a small house next to the tree with deities of Lord
Caitanyas father, Jaganntha Mira, and His mother, ac-dev, holding baby
Nimi on her lap.
Ten meters (30 feet) north from the appearance place (directly behind the small
house) is a small temple with two iva-ligas. The smaller one on the left is
Gopvara iva who admits one to the Lords service. The larger one on the
right is Ketra-pla iva who is the protector of the dhma. It is recommended
that the devotees pray to these deities at the beginning of their parikram (or
of their stay in Mypur) that the dhma and gaura-prem be revealed within
their hearts.

Sarasvat
hkura established r Caitanya
Maha in 1918. He called the area of
this compound Vrajapattana, which
means the place where Vndvana is
manifested. This is where the house of
Candraekhara was located. His wife,
Mlat, was the younger sister of rmat
ac-dev. They had no children of their
own. When Jaganntha Mira, the
father of Lord Caitanya, left this world,
Candraekhara acted as the Lords
father. He accepted Lord Caitanya as
his son and took full responsibility for
ac-mt.
r Caitanya Mahprabhu would
perform krtana at this place. He
also performed dramas with Advaita
Prabhu, rvsa, and other devotees
in the house of Candraekhara.
Nitynanda played Paurams, rvsa
Paita played Nrada Muni, Advaita
crya acted as Sadiva, Haridsa
hkura took the role of a guard from
Vaikuha, and Gaddhara Paita
played Lakm-dev.

Lord Caitanya came here with His huge
sakrtana party on His way to defeat
Chand Kazi. He would also bathe here
on His way home from the school of
Gagdsa Paita, under whom He
studied for two years.
Gagnagara
rla Bhaktivinoda hkura describes
this town in his Navadvpa-bhvataraga:
To the west of here (Mypur), on
the bank of the River Gag, stands
the town celebrated by the name of
Gagnagara. There is the house of
Gagdsa, where my Lord Gaurga
took His young brhmaa friends and
they carried out their studies.

This place is located at the end of
the village called Bhrui-g. A
monument has been constructed there
by the Bhaktivedanta Swami Charity
Trust (BVSCT). Bharadvja Muni
was sitting on a raised il (hillock)
performing his gaura-bhajana, therefore
this place is called Bharadvja-il.
rla Bhaktivinoda hkura wrote in
his Navadvpa-bhva-taraga: There
(in Gagnagara), one can see the lovely
hill known as Bharadvja-il, where
the great sage Bharadvja worshiped
Lord Gaura. The sage ultimately
attained ecstatic love for Lord Caitanya
and then wrote scriptural verses that
bestowed the gift of devotional service
unto many materialistic people.

Pthu-kua
Pthu-kua is situated between Murri
Guptas house and the Caitanya Maha.
When you leave rvsa gana
and walk away from Mypur on the
Bhaktisiddhnta Road, you will see a
large paddy field just before reaching
the Caitanya Maha. Although no
longer visible, Pthu-kua was situated
here and later came to be known as
Balll-dghi.
In the Parikram-khaa of r
Navadvpa-dhma-mhtmya,
rla
Bhaktivinoda hkura has described
66
Pthu-kua as follows:
Towards the east of Gagnagara,
where the houses of Gagdsa and
Sajaya are located, is a very beautiful
lake, now known as Balll-dghi. This
place was very important in Satyayuga when Pthu Mahrja, one of the
aktyvea-avatras of the Lord, was
ruling the earth planet. To make the
planet more suitable for living Pthu
Mahrja had started a project to level
its surface as some places were low and
others high. When Pthu Mahrja
came to Navadvpa, his workers saw

rla Bhaktivinoda hkura mentions
in his Navadvpa-bhva-taraga:
In the center of Madhuvana is the
place called Virma-sthala. There
stands the cottage of the Lords devotee
named rdhara and also a clear pond.
After rectifying the Kazi, the Lord of
the three worlds came here with His
followers and rested. When will I shout
H Gaurga! at this Virma-sthala?
When will I roll upon the ground and
cry in solitude? Overwhelmed with
emotions of ecstatic love, will I ever
see the beautiful Gaurga-sundara
drinking water from rdharas iron
pot? And when, by the power of great
fortune, will my eyes behold the young
son of ac in the midst of a rousing
krtana along with Nitynanda,
Advaita, Gaddhara, and rvsa,
dancing and begging for ecstatic love
at the house of rdhara?
(Nava dvpa-bh va-t araga)
68
r Navadvpa-dhma-mhtmya
(Parikram-khaa) describes:
When Lord Nitynanda took r Jva
on
Navadvpa-maala
Parikram
they reached the house of rdhara, or
Kolvec rdhara (the banana vendor).
This personality is also known as the
cowherd boy Kusumsava in ka-ll.
Nitynanda Prabhu said, At this place
Mahprabhu would take rest after
completing His dancing and chanting.
Therefore this place is known as Virmasthna or the place of rest.
When rdhara heard about the arrival of
Lord Nitynanda, he immediately came
forward and offered prostrated obeisance.
He worshiped Lord Nitynanda and
said, O, my Lord! You are very merciful
towards this menial servant of Yours. I
humbly request You to kindly take rest
today at my residence. Lord Nitynanda
said, You are a very fortunate person.
Lord Gaurga has personally blessed
you. Today all of us will stay here and take
rest. rdhara was extremely satisfied to
hear this desire of Lord Nitynanda.
Immediately he brought all the ingredients
for cooking and had a devotee brhmaa
cook the feast. First Lord Nitynanda
and rvsa hkura took prasda and
after they had concluded their meal,
r Jva very happily honored prasda.
When Nitynanda Prabhu reclined on
a bed after taking prasda, rdhara,
along with his whole family, massaged
His divine lotus feet.

Directions: Enter the mango grove at the
back of r Jaganntha temple in Rjpur
using the small gate at the rear of the temple.
Ahead of you on the right side you will see a
small building situated amongst a cluster of
trees. This is the place.
Points of interest:
1. The building indicates the location
of rdharas house. This area is nondifferent from Madhuvana forest
of Vndvana where Ka and
Balarma had many pastimes with
Their sakhs, cowherd boyfriends.
One of these sakhs was Kusumsava
Gopla sakh who appeared as
rdhara in Caitanya Mahprabhus
pastimes.
2. ahi-trtha-kua: On the right
side of the building you will see a field
that is dug out and surrounded by
raised edges. This was a kua in Lord
Caitanyas time. Young Nimi used to
play here and also steal bananas from
rdharas nearby banana patch.
3. Resting place: This place is also
known as virma-sthala (resting
place) as Lord Caitanya would take
rest here after performing krtana.
69
ahi-trtha
rla Bhaktivinoda hkura states in
his Navadvpa-bhva-taraga:
North of Pthu-kua is the town of
Mathur and the holy place known
as ahi-trtha, which is within
the exquisitely beautiful forest of
Madhuvana (in Vraja). This is a very
vast area populated by many people.
May my eyes become purified by
viewing this scene.
r Navadvpa-dhma-mhtmya
(Parikram-khaa) describes:
During the afternoon rvsa hkura
took r Jva on a tour. He showed
him ahi-trtha (the sixty trthas).
rvsa explained, Before the advent
of Lord r Gaurga, the demigods
came to know that the Lord would
very soon appear in Navadvpa.
Vivakarm came to Nadia, realizing
that Mahprabhu would be performing
nagara-sakrtana
and
walking
through the streets of Nadia. The
architect of the demigods understood
that the Lord along with His associates
would become very thirsty. In order to
relieve them of thirst Vivakarm dug
sixty ponds in one night, the last one
being in the village of Chand Kazi.

This is where Lord Caitanya and
Lord Nitynanda first met. r GauraNitynanda Gauya Maha temple is
said to mark the site where the house

temple is between the ISKCON temple
and the boat ghat to Navadvpa. The
area from the confluence of the Gag
and the Sarasvat up to the samdhi of
rla Prabhupda is known as odyna,
the Lords garden. This is where
Nandana crya had his house.
