1.0 INTRODUCTION

Health, Safety and Environment department also called HSE department are entities commonly found within companies that
consider environmental protection, occupational health and safety at work as important as providing quality products. HSE is also a
platform of awareness about safety and environment around us. HSE can determine how good and bad the environment especially at
our workplace. As a student, HSE is a very important subject before anyone else going for internship or working. Without introduce
HSE subject among the student, they will not perform well in their workplace and that will contribute to bad environment, health and
safety.

3.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

3.1 Meaning of Stress
According to Tamara (unknown), it is generally agreed that stress is not what happens to someone. Instead it is how a person reacts to
stressor. It is said that stress affects each person differently and it could be positive good things such as graduating, getting married
or going for vacation or could also be negative bad things like worrying for bills, break a leg or dealing with traffic jam. These
stressors can be out of the blue, for once or frequently, leading to a chronic problem. Stress is said to be a result of either physical or
psychological factors. She explained that we often get stressed by expecting or imagining bad things that do not or might never occur.
The reaction of our body towards stress is so complex and it affects the operation of many systems.
Stress responses could vary depending on the situation. Some of them are heart or cardiovascular disease, diabetes, shut down
of the digestive system, surprisingly cancer, memory and also aging.
The stress response is the most obvious in the heart or the cardiovascular system since it is causes the whole body system to
work harder. Too much stress would wear out the heart and blood vessels. Once the cardiovascular system is damaged, it becomes so
sensitive to stressor, either physical or psychological. Stress can cause the sympathetic nervous system to sent two symmetrical signals
to the heart causing it to misfire. Sudden joy or grief has the same effect on the cardiovascular system.
The digestive systems hastily shuts down during stress. One of the early sign is a lack of saliva and dry mouth. Chronic stress
would result in disease of the digestive system. This effect would then resulted in the stress of appetite. Due to stress response, it
would increase our appetite for the short term.
Short term stressors could enhance thinking. The hormones released during stress would travel to the part of the brain
responsible to retrieve memories. With increased amount of hormones released, memories are retrieved more quickly.

As people and other organisms age, their hormones level rise in the normal resting state when there is no stressor present.
When there is stressor, the level of hormones rise higher than they usually do but the body is less responsive to it. After the stressor is
gone, the level of these hormones do not return hastily. Therefore, it takes older people and organism longer to recover from stress.

3.2 Stress Management

Dimitrie (2010) divided stress management to two level which is organizational and individual level. The top priority of course would
be the organizational level who should keep stress under control for the workers. However, successful action will be limitless unless
individuals mobilize in the direction by taking several personal measures.
Understanding the organizational policies could possibly relief the workers, making them relaxed and reduce the occupational
stress. Sudden change without prior notice by the workers can lead to extremely stressful situations. Therefore, one should have a clear
understanding to the reasons of such decisions made by the organization.
Organizing personal space is another crucial thing in the struggle to fight occupational stress. Workspace is meant to be
enjoyable and allow efficient use of time. Many visual stimuli of the surrounding can cause stress, so all unnecessary things should be
discarded and offices should be decorated with plants, photographs or paintings.
A calm and friendly climate would benefits for the prevention of stress. It is helpful for those who feel stress to share their
feelings and exchange opinions with each others. Even if they could not help with it, some advice or words of encouragement would
be helpful. However, adequate communication is also absolutely necessary to avoid misunderstanding by the person who receive them.
If one observed a college showing the signs of stress, they should involve in trying to combat the occupational stress. It is
crucial for the signs of stress to be identified quickly as they appear. Stress awareness is the primary condition for eliminating it. Once

the signs are understood, the hard part begins tolerating with the particular person to take some measure to solve the problem. This
should be done reasonably without making the person feels even worst and usually talking to someone who have close relationship
with him/her would be the best. People who are stress should be dealt with patience and given a chance to recover.
Anti-stress leisure time activities are absolutely mandatory. The work/family conflict is the major source of stress, so giving
some time to spent with family is an important task in preventing stress. Relaxation by means of outdoor activities should not be
neglected. A technique of preventing stress is by saying No. Usually people becomes stress because of their inability to refuse doing
something because that would embarrassed themselves to tell others they cannot fulfill certain task given. These scenario leads to
works overload and stress with all the negative effects.

5.0 DISCUSSION
Based on our online survey, majority of them are students that filled in the survey with 72% followed by academician and
housewife with 5% and 4% respectively. Then, the rest 19% either unemployed or do other works. Next, there are 67 people that are
unemployed or students and only 4 people that are self-employed. Besides, pie chart for Question 3 and 4 describe that more than a
half of the people are male with probability that most of them are below than 20 years old .
This survey is basically about stress level of the people that filled in the survey. Based on observation workplace is the main
stress source that caused mild stress effect to 49% of them. Fortunately 100% of them are in a good health because they do not need to
take any prescribed medicine during stress. But, there are 16 % that are taking regular medicine and traditional medicine. Furthermore,
majority of the respondent which are 86% of the people do not have any health problems. 4% got high blood pressure, 3% have failure
kidney and another 7% not stated.
Moreover, in terms of sports, 55% of them are rarely involve in sports or any exercise activities. Then, their main food
consumption are carbohydrate and less take vitamin. Unfortunately 15% of them are underweight in BMI and 21% are overweight.
The rest of them got normal BMI which is good. 77% of them are not receive any of alternative treatment to reduce their stress level
and BMI and there are some that are sensitive to their health and take treatments such as therapy, reflexology and acupuncture. Even
though most of them has mild effect but their way to handle their own stress is not suitable and not good for their health. They do not
care and their action is actually can lead the stress to become more critical.
They consumed a good quality of water which 71% of that are filtered water and 28% are boiled water which are good for their
body. Regrettably, there are more than 5% that smoked. Beside, in terms of knowledge, 68% of them never have learned about Health
Safety and Environment (HSE). Moreover, more than half have learned about health awareness from internet 52% and there are also
learnt through newspapers and conferences which are 3% and 4% respectively.

Based on the survey, 54% of the consumed fast food is KFC which is the highest followed by McDonald and others, 39% of
them are not expose to high temperature, toxic or poisonous chemicals followed by leased and medium, 28%, and more, 5%. Maybe
because most of the respondent is student which is not expose to this dangerous environment.
Other than that, 43% of our respondent is exposed to the hazard caused by peoples misuse of things.29% is due to chemicals
followed by others, 11%, mechanical parts,9% and gases,8%. As majority of our respondent is students, there are various distance they
need to travel. The highest is 44% which is short traveling distance. Then, moderate distance, 37% and frequent long distance, 19%.

CONCLUSION
Work environment is definitely something that influences on how employees feel about their work. As learned and observed, a
positive workplace environment makes employees feel good about their work and provide motivation to sustain their performances and
outcomes throughout the days. It happens due to their best relationship with co-workers and managers, organizational culture, room for
personal equipment, ergonomic furniture and a workplace which provide best health and safety condition. A bad workplace
environment resulted in job turnover, low in performances, absenteeism and many more. This is because people would feel that they
are not kind of motivated of they worked. They feel under-appreciated by the organisation of what they do and therefore caused in low
performance.
Specifically, in UTP it does not take the side of employees only but it does take students into account as well. Research by
readings and surveyed have been done to study on how the workplace or studying place effect the lecturers, staffs and students. Many
respondents believed that non-ergonomic furniture affects the most of healthy environment in UTP and next is poor lighting system.
These reasons are might be because people of UTP are consisting of technical people who are management staffs, lecturers and
students. These kinds of people are handling with various type of furniture and their performance affected by the lighting system as
poor lighting system would affect their sight. Most of people had headaches after work or study due to air temperature is too cold and
being medium in exposing to chemicals things (applicable to engineers). Most of the respondents are willing to change their lifestyle
into healthy one. This could be because most of respondents were exposed to healthy and safety environments knowledge.

To sum up, UTP does provide the health and safety environment to its students, staffs and lecturers. But they should improve
the level of health and safety environment to generate better outcomes. Everyone should be responsible for accidents that happened
because everyone is responsible for health and safety environment.
