SPORTS REPORTER

July 15 - 21, 2015

J o a n Ta y l o r s . . . . .
Te n P i n R a p . . . . .
I can hardly believe that I am
sitting in the classroom of the
15th annual Pro Image Bowling
Camp or as I fondly call it,
Bowling Boot Camp. Yes, 15
years ago Team USA Head
Coach Fred Borden and another
Team USA coach from this area,
Ken Yokobosky, conceptualized
the idea to hose a bowling camp,
accessible to people in the tristate area and held at Rockaway
Lanes.
It was no small task to figure
out how many coaches would be
needed, and what their availability would or would not be, in
addition to asking Rockaway
Lanes owner Richard Mark as to
when he would be willing to
close the lanes for three full
days. And after all the careful
planning, would there be
enough interest?
Well, this years figures prove
there was and still is an interest
with this years camp having
grown to an expanded class of
54 bowlers from age 12 through

63, with a waiting list of hopefuls.

To find out the motivation for
so many campers and the returning coaches, I asked a simple
question: Why are you here?
The results were:
Jeri E. (coach):
Camaraderie.
Roger S: Because four of the
best coaches in the world are in
one place at one time.
Mia W. I want to learn a littleno, a lot about ball
motion.
Joey G. Im ready to be a
better bowler.
Jennifer D. To improve
because you cant stop improving.
Sarah R. No matter where
you are, there is always room
for improvement. A 12 year old
and a 63-year old are all here
for the same thing.
Nick W. To learn something.
Ken Y (coach). I get the
chance to continue to coach
with the best coaches Ive ever

worked with since I first started

coaching (1986).
Gary McC. To improve my
game and learn something about
bowling.
Tom S. To get better and for
the camaraderie.
Tami M. To be coached by
the best coaches in the world.
Bob R. To improve my game
and because of who the coaches
are.
Noel V (coach). To help
everybody be the best they
can be.
Mason W. Because I came
here last year and had dramatic
improvement; this is my
favorite place in the world.
Jake N. It sounded like fun
and my Dad said it would help
(my game).
Joe C. To learn more about
the game and improve. All of
the people (coaches) are in one
place. (Side note: Joe attended last years camp and followed it back home in
Pennsylvania by entering a
beat the pro tournament and
winning 300-279).
Deborah B. Because Im a
beginner bowler and I got frustrated with everyone trying to
help me.
John Y (coach). This camp
gives me satisfaction to be a
good coach in helping people to
get better.

Mark P. I always wanted to

be a good bowler. My son took
to it (bowling) and hes getting
better so I have to get better,
too. Its a nice father-and-son
thing.
Tom G (coach) To give back
to the sport I loved as a kid and
adult.
Shea B. To improve my skills
and be a better bowler. I want to
be able to beat my Mom. Shes
my inspiration.
James K. Timing and overall
improvement.
Keith L. There are no better
coaches in the world. They
make you feel wonderful.
Jeff M. I bowled as a youngster and gave it up for 45 years.
I went back 5 years ago and
want to do well now.
Julio C. I havent been here
in 5 years and wanted to get
better.
Greg R. (coach). I have fun
coaching and I want to keep the
sport of bowling going. There
are enthusiastic people here.
Lou G. To execute my passion. Its also a stress reliever.
Gordon V. (coach) I look
forward to being with Fred, Jeri
and Ken. We had a great time
coaching Team USA. This is
great for me because we have
something special together.
Pete P. This (camp) is going
to change me into a 250 average bowler (laughs). I want to
keep learning the game and
gaining knowledge.
As you see, the underlying
theme was learning and improving, not to mention the respect
for world-class coaching.
This explains why this years
class had 22 attending their
first camp (median age, 15). For
10 more, it was their second; six
attended their third; three were
here for the fourth time; two
enjoyed their fifth camp, and

three have attended these camps

six or more times. Three of the
coaches were former campers
themselves.
In addition to middle school,
high school and collegiate
bowlers, there were 3 medical
doctors, 1 attorney and a professional cellist (no, this is not the
introduction to a bad joke).
They came from New York,
New Jersey, Pennsylvania and
as far south as Delaware and
Maryland.
So who were these amazing
coaches? Ohio-based Fred
Borden, the pros coach who has
written numerous books and
generated programs such as
mybowlingcoach.com and
video lessons. Gordon Vadakin,
head bowling coach at Wichita
State, many of whose graduates
are enjoying success on the professional bowlers tour. His
teams have also won numerous
national championships. Jeri
Edwards, the only female coach
in the world for a national sports
team, formerly with Team USA
and currently coaching Team
Puerto Rico. Yokobosky, who
runs 2 pro shops, and is the head
coach in the newly-formed
Caldwell College womens
bowling program. Al Jones, who
also runs the 2 pro shops and is
our wunderkind who has
received two sets of double-lung
transplants. Rounding out the
staff are Tom and Eric
Gentilella, John Yankanich and
Noel Vega.
Next week, in Part Two you
will see how these campers
fared, and who won the grand
finale tournament. I can tell you
that on the last day, Ken
Yokobosky already had a list of
people enrolled for next years
Sweet sixteenth Bowling
Boot Camp.
