MV-10 ASFE System

Superior extraction at your fingertips

Whether your workflow requires enriching target analytes
for analytical purposes, stripping unwanted material from
a product, or collecting valuable essential oils from natural
products, Waters MV-10 ASFE System is the most efficient
extraction tool available. The MV-10 ASFE System is the first supercritical fluid
extraction (SFE) system offering accelerated, multi-vessel sample extraction resulting
in a faster, greener, more selective alternative for analyte extractions from a wide variety of sample matrices. The
MV-10 ASFE can extract samples in up to 10 extraction vessels, in a semi-automated fashion, improving throughput,
and lowering operating costs compared to traditional hydrocarbon-based solvent extraction systems. Even better,
the extractions are collected with less solvent resulting in shorter dry down times.

Solvent Extract

Traditional hydrocarbon-based solvent extraction systems require

a time-consuming distillation and dry down step that may alter
the taste, aroma, and/or chemical composition of your product.
Extractions done by SFE, by comparison, leave little to no solvent
in your product. Because CO2 dissipates into the atmosphere

the compound of interest. When compared to the solvent extract, SFE had better
yield for the compound of interest and the resulting extraction was cleaner,
enabling more efficient purification.

T HE MOST EFFICIENT EX T RAC T ION T ECHNIQUE

The need to develop more environmentally friendly processes
is one of the most important issues facing laboratories today.
Of primary concern, is the elimination or major reduction of the
use of organic solvents in many routine procedures. This has
opened the door to alternative methods, such as supercritical
CO2 extraction.
Soxhlet liquid-solid extraction is a simple, effective, and relatively
inexpensive extraction technique. However, it can be a slow
process (requiring 18 to 24 hours to complete), has limited
selectivity, risk of compound degradation, and can use copious
amounts of toxic organic solvents.
Soxhlet extraction = 6 hours extraction time,
250 mL Hexane (ACOS Method AM 2-93)
SFE = 20 minutes extraction time,
~200 mL of CO2 and 15 mL Methanol
Tygon tubing has been extracted utilizing the MV-10 ASFE System. The extracted
liquid is very clear and free from any solids making analysis of this sample very
straight forward, foregoing further sample prep, saving time and money.

Comparatively, when extractions are done using the

MV-10 ASFE System, the extracted compounds are cleaner
(containing less contaminants when analyzed), extraction
efficiency is higher, selectivity is better, yield is higher,
and costs are lower.

HOW ASF E WORK S

Waters SFE Systems extract chemical
compounds using supercritical carbon
dioxide (CO2) instead of an organic
solvent. The sample is placed in an

Fluid Delivery Module

Back Pressure Regulator

The Fluid Delivery Module (FDM) is specifically designed to meet

the demanding needs of CO2 delivery, and features a CO2 pump
and co-solvent pump for a seamlessly integrated solution. The
module offers up to six co-solvents using an integrated co-solvent
selection valve, and also includes a heat exchanger, inlet CO2
pressure sensor, and temperature sensor to provide and monitor
optimal CO2 delivery.

The Back Pressure Regulator (BPR) provides precise pressure

control for supercritical fluids. The units valve assembly is motordriven and temperature controlled to compensate for cooling
during depressurization. A built-in pressure sensor provides a
closed-loop feedback for control and pressure alarm monitoring.

Column Oven
The Column Oven is a thermally controlled module, designed
for use with SFE extraction vessels. The column ovens unique
drawer design gives the user easy access to all connections.
The extraction vessels come in 5, 10, or 25 mL volume, are
outfitted with finger-tight fittings for simplified operation, and
are designed for even distribution of the fluid contacting the
sample. A threaded cap with a spring-loaded seal enhances safety,
and enables effortless sample loading and unloading.

Fraction Collection Module

The Fraction Collection Module incorporates a 12-port fraction
selector valve, a make-up pump, and a 12-bottle fraction collector.
Users can choose from 100, 250, or 500 cc collection bottles
as desired.

ChromScope Software
Waters ChromScope Software enables fully automated
instrument control and facilitates the process of developing SFE
extractions. Its simple work-flow-based architecture, and intuitive
user-friendly interface makes routine analysis, reporting, and
fraction collection easy. Simple menus guide users through a
stepwise process of creating new sequences, including method
screening and purification.

New GUI (graphical user interface) allows easy method development, systems monitoring, and sample extraction.
