Recommendations for Using
Sexed Semen
Sexed Semen is a product that allows you to predict
the gender of your calves with 90% accuracy.
Benefits of Using Sexed Semen
1. Rapid increase of the female herd.

2. Improve the genetic value of your herd by
selecting replacement heifers from a larger group
of animals.
3. Decrease calving difficulties.
4. Producers can choose to produce females or
males.
5. Increase marketing capabilities by allowing
producers to target specific markets.
Important Considerations for Using

SexedSemen
1. Sexed semen is packaged in 0.25cc straws (French

straws); it must be used with 0.25cc or universal
A.I. guns.
2. Maintain proper inventory management to
minimize the amount of time straws are handled
outside of the tank and thus exposed to potentially
hazardous temperatures.
3. Sexed semen needs to be thawed using
temperature-regulated thawing units and utilizing
a thermometer to monitor temperature. Water
temperature should be between 95F and 98F
(35C - 37C). Straws should be thawed for at least
30 seconds and used to A.I. within 10 minutes of
thawing. Change the water in your thawing unit
daily. Keep the defroster without water when not
in use to avoid contamination.
4. For best results, use sexed semen in heifers or
in cows with an excellent record of conception
through A.I.
5. Avoid using sexed semen in animals that have
had more than two services or are under stress
or experiencing other conditions that might
compromise conception rates.
6. An experienced technician should perform the
A.I.
7. Perform A.I. 14-18 hours after the first signs of
standing heat and for best results use sexed semen
in animals that show a clear sign of a good heat.
8. Maintain good nutrition, sanitation and health
programs for your herd.
Synchronization Protocols
1. Natural Heat Detection
Expect to have 4-5 percent of females show heat each day.
It has shown to be less efficient than other methods.
More labor needed as two 30 to 45 minutes twice per day heat
observations are required.
Each day females are sorted for A.I.
2. Prostaglandin Synchronization
One of the lowest cost protocols available.
Expect to have 60 percent to 70 percent of females in heat
during a four-day period.
Requires heat observations twice a day.
3. Double Prostaglandin Synchronization

Consists of a double prostaglandin injection during a 14-day
interval.
Slightly more efficient than a single injection protocol.
Both prostaglandin protocols will be more effective on heifers

and dry cows.
4. Ovsynch Heat Detection Protocol

Consists of a single GnRH injection on day one.
A prostaglandin injection seven days later with heat detection.
More efficient than using only prostaglandin, especially for
lactating cows.
5. CDIR Protocol with Heat Observation

On day one, a CIDR is administered along with a GnRH
injection.
At day seven, inject prostaglandin and remove the CIDR.
Heat detection on day eight (PM), day nine (AM/PM) and
day 10 (AM).
Most females will show heat on day nine.
Better synchronization results than most prostaglandin
protocols.
More expensive than other methods due to increased labor
required.
Requires three chute movements including heat observation
and A.I.
6. Fixed Time A.I. Protocol

Consists of the same CIDR protocol with a hormone to
synchronize and induce ovulation.
Allows producer to A.I. all females at a fixed time after CIDR
removal.
There are several variations of these recommended protocols.

Consult with a Sexing Technologies representative or your
local veterinarian about the right protocol for your cattle and
operational goals.
