In a slider crank mechanism, the length of the crank and connecting rod are 150 mm and
600 mm respectively. The crank position is 600 from inner dead centre. The crank shaft
speed is 450 r.p.m.(clockwise). Using analytical method, determine: 1.Velocity and
acceleration of slider and 2. Angular velocity and angular acceleration of the connecting
rod.
2. The length of crank and connecting rod of a horizontal reciprocating engine are 250 mm
and 1.0 m respectively. The crank is rotating at 500 r.p.m. When the crank has turned
through 30o from the inner dead centre, the difference of pressure between the cover end
and piston end is 0.4 N/mm2. If the mass of the reciprocating pats is 100 kg and cylinder
bore is 0.4 m, then calculate: (i) Inertia, (ii) Force on piston, (iii) Piston effort, (iv) Thrust
on the sides of cylinder walls.
3. A vertical double acting steam engine has a cylinder 300 mm diameter and 450 mm
stroke and runs at 200 r.p.m. The reciprocating parts has a mass of 225 kg and the piston
rod is 50 mm diameter. The connecting rod is 1.2 m long. When the crank has turned
through 1250 from the top dead centre, the steam pressure above the piston is 30 kN/m 2
and below the piston is 1.5 kN/m2. Calculate the piston effort.
4. A vertical, single cylinder, single acting diesel engine has a cylinder diameter 300 mm,
stroke length 500 mm, and connecting rod length 4.5 times the crank length. The engine
runs at 180 r.p.m. The mass of the reciprocating parts is 280 kg. The compression ratio is
14 and the pressure remains constant during the injection of the oil for 1/10th of the
stroke. If the compression and expansion follows the law pv1.35 = constant, find:1. Crankpin effort, 2. Thrust on the bearings, and 3. Turning moment on the crank shaft, when the
crank displacement is 45 from the inner dead centre position during expansion stroke.
The suction pressure may be taken as 0.1 N/mm2.
5. The mass of flywheel of an engine is 6.5 tonnes and the radius of gyration is 1.8 metres.
It is found from the turning moment diagram that the fluctuation of energy is 56 kN-m. If
the mean speed of the engine is 120 r.p.m., find the maximum and minimum speeds.
6. A single cylinder, single acting, four stroke cycle gas engine develops 20 kW at 200 rpm.
The work done by the gases during the expansion stroke is 3 times work done on the
gases during the compression stroke. The work done on the suction and exhaust strokes
may be neglected. If the flywheel has a mass of 1000 kg and has a radius of gyration of
0.6 m. find the cyclic fluctuation of energy and the co-efficient of fluctuation of speed.
7. A certain machine requires a torque of (5000+500 sin ) N-m to drive it, where is the
angle of rotation of shaft measured from certain datum. The machine is directly coupled
to an engine which produces a torque of (5000+ 600 sin 2) N-m. The flywheel and the
other rotating parts attached to the engine has a mass of 500 kg at a radius of gyration of
0.4 m. If the mean speed is 150 r.p.m., find the fluctuation of energy, 2. The total
fluctuation of speed, 3. The maximum and minimum angular acceleration of the flywheel
and the corresponding shaft position.

8. The turning moment diagram for a multi cylinder engine has been drawn to a scale of
1 mm = 325 Nm vertically and 1 mm = 3o horizontally. The areas above and below the
mean torque line are -26, +378, -256, +306, -302, +244, -380, +261, and -225 mm2 the
engine is running at a mean speed of 600 rpm. The total fluctuation of speed is not to
exceed 1.8% of the mean speed. If the radius of the flywheel is 0.7 m, find the mass of
the flywheel.
9. A certain machine requires a torque of (1400+200 sin ) Nm to drive it, where is the
angle of rotation of the shaft measured from some datum. The machine is direct coupled
to an engine which produces a torque of (1400+250 sin 2) Nm. The flywheel and
rotating parts attached to the shaft have a mass of 300 kg and radius of gyration 0.40 m.
The mean speed is 150 rpm. Calculate :
(i)
The percentage of fluctuation of speed.
(ii)
The maximum angular acceleration of the flywheel.
10. The ratio of the connecting rod length to crank length for a vertical petrol engine is
4:1.The bore/stroke is 80/100 mm and mass of the reciprocating part is 1 kg. The gas
pressure on the piston is 0.7 N/mm2 when it has moved 10 mm from TDC on its power
stroke. Determine the net load on the gudgeon pin. The engine runs at 1800 rpm At what
engine speed will this load be zero.
