Railways The biggest public sector organization in
India, Indian railways have been a great integrating force
for more than 150 years. It is also a commonly used mode
of long distance transportation in India. The rail network
traverses the length and width of the country, covering a
total length of 63,140 km. Its operations cover 28 states
and three Union Territories and also linked with the
neighboring countries like Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh
and Pakistan. Traveling through rail is one of the most
fascinating and educating experience where most of the
India can be visible on the stations and on the way. Unique
type of toilet system often amuse foreign travelers.
ZONES
Rajasthan and North India
Delhi Located in the northern India on the bank river
Yamuna, the capital city is second largest metropolis after
Mumbai with a population of over 13 million. The city is
rich with historical culture,human diversity and modern
outlook. Both Old and New Delhi exert a captivating
charm on visitors while old Delhi is famous for imperial
monuments like Red fort, Qutub Minar, Humayun Tomb
and mazy streets of Chandni Chowk, New Delhi is
illustrious for shopping malls, museums, art houses.
Mehrangarh fort
Lucknow Lucknow, capital city of most populous state
that is Uttar Pradesh is famous for courteous behavior of its
people and poetry. The city lies near the Gomti river was the
city of Nawabs, the ancient Muslim rulers. Rulers of the
city of Lucknow had a taste for art, dance and music all this
is quiet evident from what the city offers visitors.
Mussoorie - Mussoorie is a former British hill station in the
foothills of the Himalayas, located in the new state of
Uttaranchal. Its a place of beauty, fresh mountain air, lush
green forests, quiet hideaways, nature tours and more. With
its varied flora & fauna , its absolutely a scenic beauty.
Mussoorie is conveniently connected to road by Delhi and
major cities and is the 'Gateway' to Yamunotri and Gangotri
Shrines of Northern India.
Ma Hidamba Temple
Shimla - Once a summer capital in India, the natural
beauty of the 2159 m high Shimla makes it one of the most
popular hill resorts in the country. Shimla's Mall is the
happening place where it is always crowded with tourists.
Besides, there are some ancient temples, which also
attracts tourists.
Dharamshala Dharamshala is a small town in Himachal
Pradesh well associated with Hinduism and Buddhism for
a long time. Hill station is wooded with oak and conifer
trees and snow capped mountains enfold three sides of the
town. Main attractions are Mc Leod Ganj, Bhagsunag
Falls, St. John Church, Dal Lake and number of Buddhist
monasteries.
Buddhism
Ladakh - Moonlandlh or LgLittle Tibeh often called , the
land of snow and mystery coupled with interesting history,
Ladakh invite striking bleakness through the eyes of a
traveler. In an extremely harsh environment where most of
the time temperature is hovering around minuses, still it
attracts travelers. Exotic monasteries and lifestyle of
Ladhakis are the main attractions.
Elephant
Sikkim The small north eastern state nestled in the
Himalayas is the least populous state in India. Sikkim is
surrounded by Nepal to the west, Tibet (China) to the
north, Bhutan to the west and the Indian state of West
Bengal to the south has some of the loftiest mountains in
the world. Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest peak, is
located in the north western part of the state on the
boundary with Nepal,, and can be seen from most parts of
the state. Sikkim has become one of India's most visited
states, owing to its reputation of cleanliness, scenic beauty
and political stability.
Arunachal Pradesh 'Land of rising sun' is known for its
mysterious and magical culture, located on the north
eastern tip of India, the place is well deserve for the offbeat
travelers. It is bounded by independent countries on the
three sides and by Assam and Nagaland in the south. The
long international border comprises of Bhutan on its west
(160 km), the Tibet region of China on its northern and
north east border (1080 km) and Myanmar (formerly
Burma (440km) on the eastern border.
Nagaland People
Mizoram - An amalgamation of the former north and
south Lushai hill districts, Mizoram is a land of great
natural beauty, an endless variety of landscape with rich
flora and fauna, clusters of pines and quaint villages with
houses on piles. The flavor of social life in the Mizo
society has undergone tremendous change over the last
few years. Main attractions are handicraft, virgin forest
and waterfalls.
Manipur - Manipur means the jewel of a land . The
name is well suited with its beautiful landscapes, smoky
blue mountains and abundant forests. Nestled in the
northeast corner of India state is not only famous for
nature's charisma but also for its culture, especially divine
Manipuri dance form.There are number of tourist
attractions like Govindajee temple,World War II
cemetery, Langthabal , which features relics of historical
palace and beautiful temples.
Victoria Memorial
Puri Situated on the eastern coastline of the country, Puri
is one of the holiest places in India. Blessed with some
exotic temples and a finest beach, it is must see for any
overland traveler. Puri has a typical tropical climate and is
best visited during the winters between October to April.
The Jagannath Temple, one of the four most important
Hindu pilgrimage sites, wonderfully wide white-sand
beaches, fishing farms and excellent resorts make it a
sought after tourist destination.
Khajuraho
Mumbai Mumbai is the financial capital of India
famous for its incredible pace and Hindi film industry
(Bollywood). Though it doesn't have much historical
relics like in other metropolitan cities, Mumbai has
always managed to allure people across the world.
Signature attraction of Mumbai is Gateway of India, there
are many other popular tourist attraction like Prince of
Wales Museum , Hanging Garden, Juhu Beach and
offcourse never to miss, the Film City.

Annapurna Temple
Mahakal Mandir
Orchha - Orchha, now a small hamlet in the state of
Madhya Pradesh. The place is not all about history and
legends but it has grandeur beauty with exotic valley and
serene rivers. Important tourist attractions are Raj Mahal,
Jahangir Mahal, Rai Parveen Mahal and some ancient
temples.
Mandu A deep and wide valley located in the state of
Madhya Pradesh. It separates the plateau from the
tableland in the north. Deep ravines cut into the sides of
the plateau which looks isolated and cut off from the rest
of the countryside. The place is full of temples, palaces,
tomb and mosques.
Bhopal Bhopal the capital of Madhya Pradesh also
famously known as 'city of lakes', situated around two
artificial lakes amidst picturesque settings. The laid-back
and charming city has crowded market place, ancient
mosques and exquisite palaces. The city is also a gateway
to the Buddhist center- Sanchi- and the neolithic caves of
Bhimbetka.
Climate
India has tropical climate. The subcontinent has eight
climatic zones all of which only have the monsoon rains
in common. Latitudinal and physiological factors have
greatly influenced the climate characteristics of the
country.
Mainly Indian climate can be broadly categorized into
three seasons :
Summer : April to June
During summer, the western region is the hottest. Hilly
regions are cool and pleasant. The day temperature in
Rajasthan can be shoot up to 50 degrees Celsius.
Northern plains are also constantly hot. Comparative to
North and west, eastern and southern regions are less hot
but humidity is around 90 percent.
Monsoons : June to October
Virupaksha temple
Kanchipuram The Indian state located in south India is
seven most sacred pilgrims centers for the Hindus and a
home of thousand temples. It is famous for temples and
silk sarees, which are woven manually by skilled weavers
some of these silk weavers are here from more than 400
years ago. Such is the popularity of Kanchipuram silk that
the city hosts the world famous Silk Tourism Festival in
the month of October, each year.
Madurai A city with a rich cultural heritage of more
than 2500 years old and has functioned as an important
commercial center located on the bank of river Vaigai in
the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city of Madurai is
originally built around the Meenakshi temple. Though
there are numerous other temples in Madurai, which is
why it is known as the "Temple City", the Meenakshi
temple's architectural grandeur subdues all other
masterpieces.
Port Blair Capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands,
which is a union territory of India attracts tourists for its
picturesque location spread over a number of hills and
natural heritage with evergreen moist deciduous and
swamp forests. There are number of islands like Neil,
Ross and Chatam islands, which are beautiful destination
to visit.

Festivals of India
Diwali : Celebrated in the month of October/November,
Diwali is the biggest festival of Hindus all over the world. It is
known as the 'Festival of Lights'. The festival is celebrated by
rich- poor, young or old through out the country with great spirit
and enthusiasm. It commemorates the Lord Rama's return to his
kingdom- Ayodhya, after the exile of 14 years. It celebrates the
victory of good over bad. Diwali is celebrated for five days.
Homes are decorated with diyas or lamps. Gifts are exchanged
among the people and sweets are distributed by everyone.
People burn crackers and perform Lashmi puja in the evening.
Holi : Holi is the most colourful and oldest festival of the
Hindus. It is celebrated on Phalgun Purnima (in the month of
March). It marks the arrival of spring and the death of Holika.
People dance in joy and smear colour on each other. Young ones
go out in the streets, play pranks, throw colour water balloons
on each other and shout Holi hai means 'It's Holi'. Normally it is
celebrated for two days. On the first day bonfires are lit and on
the second day colours are sprayed. Holi is celebrated for 16
days in Mathura. Hindus all over the world eagerly wait for this
festival.

Eid-ul-Fitr Eid-ul-Fitr is the festival of Fast Breaking.
Muslims gather in the mosques to offer prayer to the Allha. It is
celebrated to mark the end of Ramzan. The festival lasts for
three days, but the first day is the most important. People give
gifts to one another and exchange greetings of 'Eid Mubarak'.
Homes are decorated with bright colours. Giving special
charity on this occasion is obligatory. Muslims prepare
luxurious feasts on this day. It is the day of happiness and
rejoicing.

Durga Puja
Ganesh Chaturthi : Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the
birthday of the Lord Ganesh. It is celebrated for five to ten
days. It falls on the forth day of the Bhadrapada (between
August and September). It is celebrated with lot of devotion
in all the parts of India especially in Maharashtra. The
grand processions is carried out by the people, carrying the
immense idol of the Lord Ganesh, which is immersed in the
water. The houses and temples are cleaned and white
washed properly before the idol of Ganesh is installed.
Every coommunity makes its own pandals. People usually
fasts during these days and distribute sweets to one another.
Pongal
Onam : Onam is the biggest festival celebrated in the Indian
state of Kerala. It falls in between August and September. The
festival marks the home coming of the legendary King
Mahabali. Snake Boat race and the Kathakali dance enliven
the atmosphere of this day. It is most important harvest
festival, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the
world. Carnival of Onam lasts for ten days, which is carried
out with drum, music and dance performances. People offer
prayers to the Lord Vishnu on tis day.
Christmas :Christmas is the birth anniversary of Jesus. It is
the annual holiday all over the world. It is celebrated on the 25
th December every year. People decorate their houses with
the small clay oil- burning lamps. X- Mas trees are beautifully
decorated with the stars, lights, glitters, tinsels, toys, plastic
fruits and gifts. Churches are fully filled with the red flowers
and are decorated with poinsettias on the Christmas Eve.
Christians in Mumbai display manger in front of their front
window and are also seen hanging mango leaves on their roof
tops. Carol singing enliven the Christmas festival with great
enthusiasm. People exchange gifts and prepare delicious
cakes on this occasion.
Ganesh Chaturthi
Maha Shivaratri : It is celebrated on the sixth night of the
dark Phalgun (Feburay or March) every year. It is the same
night when Lord Shiva performed Tandava. People keep
fast on this day and offer prayers, milk, sweets and flowers
to the idol of the Lord Shiva. It is celebrated through out the
country, but is most popular in Uttar Pradesh. It is also
believed that on this day Shivaji and Parvati tied knot. All
the ceremonies takes place during the night. Temples are
beautifully decorated with lights on this moonless night.

think of. The gargantuan mountains give umpteen scope
for rock climbing, trekking, skiing, skating, mount biking.

mountains are just wild for river rafting, and canoeing . If
you are a wildlife buff and love to explore wild beast in
their home, you have plenty of options in India's dense and
ferine forests. Human adventure mania is not only
confined to water and land but also spread its wings to air.

Walk in The Bazaars : Indian experience will be
incomplete without hovering around local bazaar (local
market). Plenty of roadside shops with honking sellers are
mind-boggling. Every place in India have a unique flavor of
its bazaars but one thing is common, the chaotic crowd.
Walking down on the narrow path between shops on either
sides, bargaining with sellers, witnessing diverse cultural
people and experience an unparalleled olfactory sensation
are something, which one can only found in Indian bazaar.
A Visit to Yoga Ashram : Yoga is originated in the Land of
one of the ancient civilization in the world. Resting serenely
on the banks of the holy Ganga (Ganges), nestled in the lap
of the Himalayas in Rishikesh, are ashrams (charity homes)
in an atmosphere of true spiritual humility. Stay at any Yoga
Ashram for few days and surely toxins from your body and
mind will be eliminated. Day starts in typical ashram with
chanting, meditation , yoga and lecture on it. Major ashrams
have residential rooms that retain the simplicity of ashram
living and yet are equipped with the necessary modern
amenities.

Traveling Tips
India invite millions of travelers across the world every
year. It has well established infrastructure for outlanders.
You need patience and some trivial information to get your
experience more fruitful.
01.Carry little, you will find every essential items wherever
you go.
02.India is a tropical country. Therefore, fill up your
haversack with cotton clothes, however, during winter
months north and highlands of south do get cold at night.
Day is sweet warm weather, light jacket is ok. Women
should avoid skimpy clothes to avoid glares of public.
