Spelling Activities

Each week, you will be given a list of words that follow a particular spelling
pattern. In addition, you will have review words, tricky words, and sentences to
practice each week.

HOMEWORK:
Monday Wednesday: Choose one activity from the activity list to complete
using at least 10 of your spelling words. You do not need to turn in your
activity, but you may bring it to school for me to see if you would like!
Thursday: Have a family member read aloud ALL of your spelling words to
you for a practice test. When you finish, check over your words. Write any
misspelled words on the back 3 times each.
Every Friday, you will take a spelling quiz made up of words with the same
spelling pattern(s) as the words on your list. You will also be required to write 2
sentences that I read aloud.
Words to Learn: Any misspelled pattern words on the weekly spelling quiz will
be added to your own My Words to Learn page for continued practice.

*Note: There will be some weeks in which new spelling pattern words are not
given. During these weeks, you will instead choose spelling words from the
Words to Learn list to practice at school and home. If you dont have any
words on your list, enjoy the week off from spelling!

ABC Order: List all of your words in alphabetical order. (Challenge: List them in reverse
alphabetical order).
Across and Down: Write each of your spelling words across and down, sharing the beginning
letter.

Acrostic Poem: Write an acrostic poem for each of your spelling words.

Back Writing: Write your words with your finger on a family members back. Have him or her
guess each word. (Challenge: Switch roles and you become the guesser!)
Backwards Words: Write each of your spelling words forwards then backwards.

Beat the Clock: Set a timer for 3 minutes. Write your words as many times as possible before the
timer goes off. Try it again to see if you can beat your record the 2nd time!
Bubble Letters: Write each of your spelling words in bubble letters. After you write out all of
your words, color them in with a crayon or colored pencil.
Chalk Words: Write each of your spelling words outside using sidewalk chalk.
Change-a-Letter: Create as many words as you can by changing only one letter in your spelling
words at a time.
Example: mat man can cat rat ran
Comic Strip: Create a comic strip using as many of your spelling words as you can. Underline
your words when they are used.

Connect the Dots: Write each of your spelling words in dots. Then connect the dots by tracing
over the letters with a crayon or colored pencil.
Descriptive Sentences: Write a strong, descriptive sentence for each of your spelling words.
Underline your word in each sentence.

Example: The exhausted explorer dragged his feet through the cold, dreary snow.
Fancy Letters: Write each of your spelling words using fancy letters. Your letters can have dots
or curly-qs, for example. Have fun!
Geo Greetings: Go to the web site, www.geogreeting.com, and type in each of your words to
see them in pictures of buildings from around the world!
Home Run Speller: Draw a diamond with 4 bases and ask a family member to be the pitcher. The
pitcher reads aloud a word. If you spell it correctly, move to the next base. You earn a point
every time you pass home base!
Memory: Write each of your spelling words on two small pieces of paper or index cards and
spread them out to play a game of Memory! Read and spell your word out loud each time you
get a match.
Military Spelling: Do jumping jacks! Each time you clap your hands at the top, say a letter to spell
out each of your words.
Paint Your Words: Use a paintbrush and water to paint each of your spelling words on the
sidewalk, driveway, or a piece of construction paper (q-tips also work well for this!).
Rainbow Words: Write each of your spelling words at least 3 times. Use a different color each
time you write it!
Ransom Words: Cut out letters from a magazine or newspaper and glue on a sheet of paper to
create each of your spelling words.
Rhyming Words: Write out each of your spelling words. Next to each word, come up with as
many rhyming words as you can.

Example: man can, fan, van, Dan

Sand Speller: Pour some sand (or salt, sugar, etc.) into a small tray or lid. Use your finger to spell
out each of your words in the sand.
Shaving Cream Words: With your parents permission, spread out an even layer of shaving cream
on the table. Write out each of your words with your finger.
Silly Sentences: Write a silly sentence for each of your spelling words. Underline your word in
each sentence.

Example: My dog wears a blue and purple dress each time he takes a bath.
Spelling City: Enter your spelling words on www.spellingcity.com. Choose a game to play with
your words!
Spelling Code: Come up with a code for each letter of the alphabet and write on a separate
sheet of paper. Then write each of your words in code.

Example: a = , b = , c = , etc
Spelling Math: Write out each of your spelling words and add up the total value of each using the
following code: A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, etc
Spelling Poem: Write a poem using as many of your spelling words as possible. Underline each
word as you use it. Read your poem aloud to a family member.
Spelling Riddles: Write a riddle for each of your spelling words in which your word is the answer.
Share your riddles with a family member to see if they can solve them!

Example: I cry when Im hungry. I wear diapers. I am cute and cuddly. What am I?
Answer: baby
Spelling Scramble: Write the letters in each word scrambled up (or ask a family member to do
this). Then, unscramble and re-write your words correctly.
Spelling Song or Rap: Write a song or a rap using your spelling words. Perform it for a family
member. You may even present it to the class if you would like!

Spelling Story: Write a short story using at least 10 of your spelling words. Underline each word
as you use it. For extra fun, add a colorful illustration to your story!
Tongue Twisters: Write an alliterative tongue twister using each of your spelling words. Underline
your word in each sentence.

Example: Sally saw some seals in the sea.


Typing Words: Type each of your words on the computer at least 3 times. Use a different font
and color each time you type your words!
Upper and Lower: Write your spelling words normally. Then, rewrite your words with the
consonants in uppercase and the vowels in lowercase letters.

Waterfall Words: Write the first letter of your spelling word. In each row that follows, add another
letter until you have spelled the whole word. Repeat with all of your spelling words.

Word Search: Make a word search with all of your spelling words using graph paper or
www.puzzlemaker.com. Complete the word search by finding all of your words!
Word Sorts: Sort your words in as many ways as you can into different categories.

Example: same vowel sound, same beginning letter, same number of letters, same number of
syllables, ABC order, etc.
Write a Letter: Write a letter to someone using as many of your spelling words as you can. Make
sure to include all the parts of a friendly letter. You may even mail the letter!
Create Your Own: Create a new activity to do with your spelling words!
