and paper industry
Case example: Kymin Voima, Kuusankoski, Finland

2.

Medium-size condensing power plants based on local

biomass
Case example: E.ON UK Stevens Croft Power Station,
Lockerbie, Scotland

Large CHP plants in pulp and paper industry

Power plants operated according to steam demand of
the paper machine or pulp mill
Electricity produced by back-pressure steam turbine
Total efficiency = (electricity + heat) / fuel energy > 80%
Fuels:

Mills own side products

(bark, rejects, sludge)
Forest fuels from companys
own wood collection
Additional fuels purchased
to cover the demand

Nordic Countries:
peat, coal + oil/gas as back-up
Central Europe: mainly gas

Project background

Renewables Obligation (Scotland) Order:

Legal obligation on all licensed suppliers to meet a
defined percentage of retail sales from eligible renewable
sources:
Obligation is 5.5% in 2005/06 rising to 10.4% in 2010/11

Alternatively a supplier can pay the buy-out price
