Question 1: Sound made in front of a tall building 18 m away, is repeated.

Name the phenomenon and briefly explain it.

Answer: The phenomenon is echo. When sound gets reflected from an
obstacle and reaches our ear after 0.1 s. we are able to distinguish between
the original sound and the reflected sound which is called echo
Question 2: Name the musical instruments one in each case, which
produces its notes by using the following. In each case state the method
used to produce notes of different pitches and loudness.
(a) A vibrating string.
(b) A vibrating column of air.
(c) Vibration of any other body.
Answer.: (a) Violin: The player using his fingers increase or shortens the
length of the string to produce different frequency notes. Also different
strings of different mass and tension produce different frequency or pitch.
The loudness can be increased by the sound box provided.
(b) Flute: The length of the air column is varied by pressing the fingers on
different holes which varies the frequency and hence the pitch. The loudness
is increased by increasing the amount of air vibrating which increases the
intensity.
(c) Drums: The membrane is adjusted to produce different pitch. The
enclosed volume of air increases the loudness.
Question 3: Sound made in front of a tall building 18 m away, is repeated.
Name the phenomenon and briefly explain it.
Answer: The phenomenon is echo. When sound gets reflected from an
obstacle and reaches our ear after 0.1 s. we are able to distinguish between
the original sound and the reflected sound which is called echo.
Question 4: An observer stands at a distance of 850 m from a cliff and fires
a gun. After what time gap will he hear the echo, if sound travels at a speed
of 350 m s-1 in air?

Answer:

v=

Question 11
As the frequency of a wave increases, the period of waves ___________?
Answer: Decrease, Period is the reciprocal of the frequency. So as f increases,
1 / f decreases.

Answer:
F=440 Hz
Find: T
T= 1/f
= 1/440Hz
= 0.00227 sec.
Question 13
What is the formula for finding the period?
Answer: T= 1/f
Question 14
What is the formula for finding the frequency?
Answer: F= 1/T
Question 15

Answer:
Find: T
T= 1/f
= 1/20Hz
= 0.05 sec
Question 16

A speaker vibrates at a frequency of 200 Hz. What is its period?

Answer:
Find: T
T= 1/f
= 1/200Hz
= 0.005 sec
Question 17
A swing has a period of 10 seconds. What is its frequency?
Answer:
Find: f
f= 1/T
= 1/10sec
= 0.1 Hz
Question 18
A pendulum has a period of 0.3 second. What is its frequency?
Answer:
Find: f
f= 1/T
= 1/0.3 sec
= 3.33 Hz
Question 19

A pendulum takes 0.5 second to complete one cycle. What is the pendulums
period and frequency?
T= 1/f

f= 1/T

= 1/ 0.5sec

= 1/ 2.0 Hz

= 2.0 Hz

= 0.5 sec

Question 20
A wave is introduced into a thin wire held tight at each end. It has an
amplitude of 3.8 cm, a frequency of 51.2 Hz and a distance from a crest to
the neighboring trough of 12.8 cm. Determine the period of such a wave.
Answer:
0.0195 sec
Here is an example of a problem with a lot of extraneous information. The
period is simply the reciprocal of the frequency. In this case, the period is 1/
(51.2 Hz) which is 0.0195 seconds.
Know your physics concepts to weed through the extra information.
Question 21
Frieda the fly flaps its wings back and forth 121 times each second. The
period of the wing flapping is ____ sec.
Answer: 0.00826 sec

The quantity 121 times/second is the frequency. The period is the reciprocal
of the frequency.
T=1(121 Hz) = 0.00826 s
Question 22
Answer: 0.0883 cycles/ s
Frequency refers to the number of occurrences of a periodic event per time
and is measured in cycles/second. In this case, there are 10 cycles per 2
minutes (also known as 10 cycles per 120 seconds). So the frequency is

f =10 cycles / 120 s = 0.0833 cycles/s

Question 23
Non-digital clocks (which are becoming more rare) have a second hand that
rotates around in a regular and repeating fashion. The frequency of rotation
of a second hand on a clock is _______ Hz.
Answer:
f= 1/T
= 1/ 60
f = 1 cycle / (60 s) = (1 / 60) Hz
Question 24
Edrick Taruc accompanies her father to the park for an afternoon of fun.
While there, he hops on the swing and begins a motion characterized by a
complete back-and-forth cycle every 5.0 seconds. The frequency of swing is
_________.
Answer:
f= 1/T
= 1/ 5.0 sec
= 0.2 Hz
Question 25
A period of 5.0 seconds corresponds to a frequency of ________ Hertz.
Question 26
A common physics lab involves the study of the oscillations of a pendulum. If
a pendulum makes 33 complete back-and-forth cycles of vibration in 11
seconds, then its period is _____.
Answer: 0.33 second

Period refers to the time for something to happen and is measured in

seconds/cycle. In this case, there are 11 seconds per 33 vibrational cycles.
Thus the period is (11 s) / (33 cycles) = 0.33 seconds.
Question 27
The period of the sound wave produced by a 440 Hertz tuning fork is

Answer:
Find: T
T=1/f
