New life has sprung from

the grounds of Darley Primary School.
Around 80 students ranging from grade prep to six
joined together on Wednesday (July 22) to help dig,
plant and shovel for the 2015
National Tree Planting Day.
A total of 50 trees were
planted throughout the
school grounds, which were
donated by Bunnings Warehouse, Melton.
Darley Primary School student wellbeing officer, Sharon Sperling said the event
was a great opportunity for
all grade levels to work together collaboratively.
By being involved in a national program like this it
gives the students a positive
experience and a sense of
community and ownership
of their school, she said.
Val and Monique from
Bunnings Melton came and
helped the students prepare
the soil and plant the grasses
and shrubs that they donated to the event.
Bacchus Marsh Gardening
Group members Pat and
Don also attended the day,
which according to Ms Sperling was a great success.
Students feel proud of
their work and the space
looks amazing.

Brave young rescuer

By Jessica Howard
A seven-year-old Lal Lal
boy who helped free his
younger sisters from the
scene of a car crash has been
praised for his courageous
efforts.
Aedan Bamford was the
passenger of his familys station wagon when it rolled
into a tree on Clarendon-Lal
Lal Road on April 1.
The Lal Lal Primary School
student instantly went to the
aid of his sisters Paige and
Alyssa and helped them out
of the vehicle before waving
down a passerby.
Paramedics were called to
the scene, and after removing Aedans mother, and
driver Jessica Peillon, from
the wreckage she was airlifted to Melbourne with a
broken neck.
The three children obtained
no serious injuries.
Three months later, Aedan
has received high commendation from Ambulance Victoria at a ceremony held at
his school on Monday (July
20).
Paramedic Erin McPhee,
who was at the scene of the
crash, joined acting Mobile
Intensive Care Ambulance
team director Mark Brown
at the presentation.
Whilst the cause of the

mother, who suffered damage to her neck, cervical

vertebrae, right scapula and
hand, said the family had
been in town to have a picnic
lunch and do some shopping
for Alyssas sixth birthday.
The accident happened on
the way home. We are all
proud of Aedan, it shows
how his first instinct is to
be caring, brave and smart
and to keep his composure
in such a stressful situation,
Ms Peillon said.
Its wonderful to see him
get recognition for helping
his sisters. Thinking back on
the accident is still upsetting
for Aedan, but he is happy,
proud and a little overwhelmed that doing something that comes natural to
him being a compassionate
and caring person has received so much attention.
Lal Lal Primary School
principal, Judith Porteous
said Aedan was a very brave
boy who did a great job to
be able to think straight in a
dreadful situation.
Especially considering his
smallest sister was not yet
two, she said.
Hes a little shy so we
hadnt really heard about
his efforts until this award
were very proud of him and
happy that his family is doing well.

Council
in
crisis
By Kate Taylor
Moorabool Shire Councillors past and present are under investigation.

No details are yet available

on which councillors are being investigated by the Local
Government Investigations
and Compliance Inspectorate, or what the investigation
is looking into.

The Ballarat Courier reported on Friday that a former

and a present councilor are
under investigation.
Both Council CEO Rob
Croxford and Mayor Paul
Tatchell declined to comment to the Moorabool
News.

their family car after it rolled and hit a tree. Photo - Helen Tatchell

The Inspectorate can conduct investigations at the

request of the Minister for
Local Government, but most
often is brought in by local
council themselves when abnormalities and inconsistencies are found.

Paving the
way, but not
Halletts

Email - news@themooraboolnews.com.au

By Kate Taylor
Stretches of roads and pavements in Moorabool will
be resurfaced thanks to State Government funding
but there is still no money for on/off ramps at Halletts
Way.
Extensive resurfacing works will be undertaken on
2.5kms of Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road and 2.7kms
of Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road.
Additional pavement rehabilitation and resurfacing
works will take place on Bungaree-Wallace Road and
Bacchus Marsh Road.
Funding will come from the $12.6 million that was
announced for 120 sites in Western Victoria under the
Roads Surface Replacement Program.
The program is designed to reduce the level of
deterioration of road surfaces and support local
primary producers to get their products to the market
or to the factory as well as support local residents as
they travel to work and school, creating smoother and
safer roads for all motorists and helping to preserve
the longevity of the roads.
But there is still no funding from the state government
to construct on/off ramps at Halletts Way as part of
extension works set to be undertaken to help ease
chronic traffic congestion in Bacchus Marsh.
The Halletts Way on/off ramps are not eligible for
funding as part of this program, a spokesperson for
Roads Minister Luke Donnellan told the Moorabool
News.

Train enthusiast Nick Lapthorne in the control room and the backyard view. Photos Lisa Comerford

Collector sends out a signal

By Lisa Comerford

This is not your average backyard.

Sure, it has mans best friend running
around barking at passers-by, a small
entertaining area for friends to gather
and natter at a summer bbq or just to sit
and enjoy the afternoon sun. But that is
where average ends.
You see, the owner of this yard, Nick
Lapthorne, is a train enthusiast.
It all started when Nicks father bought
a train carriage, much to the dismay of
his mother. Nick was born exactly a year
after the train carriage arrived in the
yard. His childhood was spent playing
in and around the carriage with his sister
and when he turned ten, he helped his
dad restore the carriage.

Growing up, I knew I always wanted

to be a train driver, but for a while my
passion was cars, particularly Chargers.
I soon realised cars are a bottomless pit
when it comes to money, so I tinkered
with cars less and started building
signals for model railways, he said.
Starting his career as a Gate Keeper,
then a Railway Signalman, Nick finally
landed his dream job, driving freight
trains, which he has been doing ever
since.
Nick became a collector early in his
career.
A lot of the redundant equipment
was being thrown out, and I saw an
opportunity for it to be saved.
So with permission he was allowed to

have the signal equipment that was in

good condition.
I moved to Bacchus Marsh a few years
ago and have spent the last two years
installing all the railway equipment Ive
collected, and building the Signalmans
Box, a replica on the towers that sat
beside level crossings built between 1900
and 1960.
Most people put a pool or some nice
landscaping in their backyard. I have
no idea about plants, but I do know
everything there is to know about
railway signals!
Nick hopes to eventually lay some tracks
and purchase a locomotive to sit on the
tracks beside his Signalmans Box. Then
his vision will be complete.

VicRoads Regional Director Ewen Nevett has issued a warning for these colder days
about the dangers of black ice. Photo - Helen Tatchell

Black ice warning

By Jessica Howard
Authorities are urging drivers not to be complacent
about the dangers of black
ice.
VicRoads Regional Director Ewen Nevett said as the
community finds itself in
the middle of another cold
winter, the roads can be extremely hazardous.
The cold weather were
known for in the Central
Highlands means black ice
is a serious problem, one
which can have terrible consequences if drivers dont
use the roads carefully, he
said.
Black ice forms in freezing
conditions when there has
been moisture in the area,
however it is something you
cant necessarily see. People
tend to think the road looks

fine to drive on, but if youre

travelling on the Western
Freeway at 110km/h and
you hit black ice youre going
to be in serious trouble.
VicRoads has ice warning
systems on the Western Freeway between Wallace and
Gordon and the Midland
Highway between Blampied
and Daylesford.
The systems use sensors
to detect black ice before it
forms and then automatically switches on the amber
flashing signs as well as
updating our VicTraffic app
and website with a warning
message, Mr Nevett said.
So if you are driving and
unaware of black ice on the
roads, these sensors provide
that warning for you.
Mr Nevett said the VicRoads Traffic Management

Centre could also activate

the sensors if the public
warned them of black ice
forming.
The signs, VicTraffic app
and website advise drivers
to slow to 40km/h, which
is important because the
conditions are slippery and
may cause you to run off the
road, he said.
There are eight warning
signs with flashing amber
lights and an advisory speed
limit on the Midland Highway and four on the Western Freeway. Static advisory
signs are also in place across
the arterial road network.
VicRoads encourages road
users to report hazardous
road conditions by calling 13
11 70. For more information

Survey indicates council Masterplan

deadline
closing
has room to improve
By Kate Taylor

By Kate Taylor
When it comes to community perception of its performance it seems Moorabool
Shire Council cant get no
satisfaction.
Results from the annual Local Government Community Satisfaction Survey were
strikingly similar to those of
last year despite massive
expenditure, according to
CEO Rob Croxford.
This years survey shows
us theres still room to improve in many areas and
that it takes a long time to
shift the communitys perceptions about council, Mr
Croxford said.
For example, the biggest
spend on local roads in
Moorabools history over the
past five years hasnt shifted
perceptions. This reflects our
challenge to improve our
vast road network relative
to our population during a
period of unprecedented demand on council resources.
The survey, which had
400 Moorabool residents
respond, attributes points
to each category assessing
councils performance and
is commissioned by the state
government although the
state government itself is not
subject to any satisfaction

surveys.
Results showed that the two
key community perception
indicators of overall performance (56) and direction
(53) were identical in the
2015 and 2014 surveys. These
figures were unchanged
despite a slight dip in many
specific services ratings
relative to last years survey.
Decreases in customer service (64) and sealed local
roads (43) - both down four
points, and making community decisions (50) and
advocacy (49) - both down
two points, were partly offset by a three point increase
in Community Consultation
(51).
The survey includes a grid
to plot survey responses for
specified council service areas and aligns them in relation to the respondents view
of their importance and
performance. It identifies
all council service areas surveyed as being partly or fully inside the top right-hand
quadrant. This quadrant is
the most desirable as it indicates the service is both important to the respondents
(horizontal axis) and most
respondents viewed Councils provision of that service
as acceptable (vertical axis).
CEO Rob Croxford de-

scribed the survey information as a useful snapshot of

the communities attitudes
towards council on a range
of variables.

The survey, particularly
the grid matrix, reminds
us of the relative importance the community places
on a range of our services
and how they think we are
performing.

Council will officially receive the results report at its

next meeting on 5 August.

The survey will be available on councils website

www.moorabool.vic.gov.au.
Hard copies are available at
Councils offices located at 15
Stead St Ballan, 182 Halletts
Way Darley and at the Lerderderg Library, 215 Main St
Bacchus Marsh.

The window of opportunity to provide feedback on the

proposed redevelopment of the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse
Recreation Reserve is nearly closed.
Councils draft Racecourse Recreation Reserve Site Masterplan and the Active Sports Precinct Masterplan is on public
exhibition until Thursday 30 July.
The draft plans include a multipurpose oval with two soccer
pitches and a cricket field, designated soccer pitches, Australian Rules oval, a community oval, pavilions, car parking,
change facilities, lighting, walking trails
and passive recrea
tion facilities amongst other things.
Moorabool Mayor Paul Tatchell said community input is
valued on the project.
We have had a good response so far, with submissions being made and people discussing the project widely on social
media and to council officers, Mayor Tatchell said.
If you
would like to make a submission but havent yet,

there are just days left to do so, so get in quickly.
The draft documents can be viewed on Councils website,
at www.haveyoursaymoorabool.com.au or via displays at
Councils Customer Service Offices.

Myna is
major problem
By Jessica Howard
One of Australias most feral enemies has been spotted
in Ballan.
Native to Asia, the common
Indian Myna Bird was first
introduced into Australia to
control insect pests, however
has now been declared the
second greatest threat to native birds after land clearing.
Ballan Environmental Consultant, Arthur Chapman
said the first sighting of the
common bird was recorded
by the Royal Australasian
Ornithologists Union in
1976, however the numbers
have only increased.
There were two recorded
sightings [in 1976] in a 12
kilometre square around
the Ingliston area, towards
Pykes Creek, he said.
In 1985, a man by the name
of Roger Thomas recorded

sightings of five birds in the

area, and in 2009 there was a
sighting of 10 birds just south
of Ballan. They are no longer
uncommon around here, I
have seen them myself.
Mr Chapman first spotted five of the Indian Myna
Birds in 2011, followed by
ten birds in June of last year,
and has seen even more this
month, he said.
I wouldnt be surprised if
they were moving a little bit
west. Im on the edge of Ballan, but I see them here quite
often, they hang around
with the starlings and black
birds.
If anybody has horses or
horse farms, I imagine there
would be a lot around there
too, as they like to sit on the
back of the horses.
Dedicated birdwatcher and
naturalist, Neil Macumber
said the introduced birds

are known to chase away native wildlife by taking away

nesting spots, and threatening the breeding ability of
native, hollow-nesting birds.
Because the Indian Myna
are omnivores they will eat
absolutely anything from insects to fruit and vegetables,
and even other birds such as
sparrows, he said.
They build nests in tree
hollows and drive out our
native birds, and since we
have lost a lot of trees over
the years there are nowhere
near as many existing hollows, which means there is
major competition for our
native species.
Mr Macumber, who referred to the Indian Myna
Bird as a rat with wings,
said homemade traps were
a great way to eradicate the
bird, however if sighted,
residents of the Moorabool

Shire should contact their

council ranger.
In the 1930s or 40s, a plan
was published in The Weekly Times which identified
how to build a trap for sparrows, people still build them
today and they can be used
to trap the Myna as well, he
said.
Its a cage with a little funnel of food that sits on the
ground, and when the birds
hop inside the cage to reach
the food they cant get back
out. It works very effectively,
and from what Ive heard
you can also put a mirror
in the back of the box as the
Myna sees itself and thinks
there is a rival bird, which
draws them into the trap.
Mr Macumber said the bird
is about 230 to 250cm in size
and chocolate brown in colour, with a bright yellow bill
and legs.

Singers from nine Moorabool Shire schools will join

together to commemorate
100-years of ANZAC.
Bacchus Marsh, Darley,
Pentland, Coimadai, Myrniong, Balliang East and St
Bernards Primary Schools
will join Bacchus Marsh
Grammar and Bacchus
Marsh College in a musical
commemoration to be held
on August 6.
Bacchus Marsh Great War
Centenary
Committee
(GWCC) president, Damien
Strangio said after approaching a number of local schools
with the idea, they were immediately interested.
The schools jumped on
board very enthusiastically
and I couldnt be more impressed with their involvement, he said.
When the GWCC set itself
up in 2013, the aim was to
ensure that Bacchus Marsh
held regular events right
through the five-year commemorative period. We also
hoped to involve and educate
our local school children as
much as possible. Virtually
every major event we have
held has seen a fantastic level of involvement from the
schools, and this production
is just another way to involve
our local children.
Mr Strangio said the musical event, which would
include a number of songs
relating to the First World

War, would be held at Bacchus Marsh College on what

would be a very important
date.
We have chosen to hold the
event on August 6 because it
is exactly 100-years since the
Australians attacked and occupied the Turkish frontline
at Lone Pine, Gallipoli, he
said.
These were a series of unfortunate battles that cost
thousands of Australians
their lives and it later lead to
the decision to evacuate Gallipoli, so to commemorate
this event exactly 100 years
later is really important.

said all the schools in town
would choose their choir to
each perform a song on the
night.
The production is really
going to tell a story of the
First World War through
music of that era, so there
will be songs from the beginning, during the war and
completion of the war, he
said.
About 200 or more students will be involved and
its great to see students
from every school working together. It is important
for them to understand the
100th anniversary and its
also our way of contributing
in a positive way.
Due to capacity, the production will be open to invited
guests only.

Reducing
road black
spots
By Kate Taylor
More than $2 million will
be spent on improving
three road black spots in
Moorabool.
Works on the Bacchus
MarshBalliang road and
Glenmore road intersection
at Rowsley will include the
installation of a single-lane
roundabout with signage
and lighting totalling $1.345
million.
Works totalling $419,000
will be done on Lerderderg
Gorge Road from Camerons
Road to Bacchus Marsh-Gisbourne Road at Darley that
will include widening the
pavement, line marking, installation of chevron alignment markers and advance
warning signage for curves,
installation of guard fencing
and construction of a sealed

shoulder.
The Clarendon-Blue Bridge
Road from Courts Road to
Woolshed Road at Clarendon will undergo similar
works, totalling $272,000.
The funding comes as part
of a $39.1 million boost to
the National Black Spot
Program.
An evaluation of the Black
Spot Program has found that
fatal and casualty crashes
are reduced at treated sites
by 30 per cent, equalling one
life per year for every 84 projects. Projects also return almost $7 for every $1 invested
by reducing the number and
cost of crashes.
The three sites were nominated by Moorabool Shire
Council and evaluated by
the Victorian panel which
reviews priorities for the

program; the panel includes

representatives of the Royal
Automobile Club of Victoria,
Victorian Transport Association, Victoria Police and state
and local government.
Councils
Infrastructure
Manager Phil Jeffrey explained that council made
an application to the Federal Black Spot Program
for a number of projects in
2014/15.
We are pleased that three
of these projects have been
successful in funding and
look forward to implementing them this financial year.
The funds are an opportunity to implement safety
measures at sites with a
known accident history and
will increase the safety of
the road network at these locations, Mr Jeffrey said.

Projecting life
through art

By Jessica Howard

The works of nine Moorabool artists are on display at

Ballarats Backspace Gallery.

Facets of Life features an

array of paintings, drawings, pastel works, sculptures and prints designed by
the Moorabool Artist Group
Network (MAGnet).

Inspired by the diverse environments and landscapes

of the Moorabool Shire, the
exhibition officially opened
on Saturday July 18 and
features the works of Nanette Coy, Vanessa Craven,
Terrie James, Concetta McFall, Robert McLaren, Sarah Peckham, Mary-Teresa
Ritchie, Shirleyrose Rowe
and Ri Van Veen.

speakers were also invited

to the dinners, such as Leigh
Tweedie from the Gallery on
Sturt in Ballarat.

[He] came and spoke about

how to put an exhibition together and how to approach
galleries in order to book a
space for an exhibition. We
then spent some time working on a theme and name
and discussing how to price
our work.

Since collaborating as a
group, MAGnet has had
two other group exhibitions, which were held at
the MoorArt Space in the
Lerderderg Library and the
Gallery on Sturt.
I think its important to
have people you can bounce

ideas off and be enthusiastic

and passionate with in terms
of your art, Ms Ritchie said.
I find regular meeting
with this group to be very
beneficial. I think, also, that
with three exhibitions under
our belts we are now more
confident in our art and in
how to promote and present
our work. It is a great support group and comes with
the added bonus of a whole
lot of creative ideas being
thrown around for discussion and action.
Facets of Life is a free exhibition that will run at 12pm
from Thursday to Sunday at
Backspace Gallery, 15 Camp
Street Ballarat Central, until
August 2.

Gordon resident, MaryTeresa Ritchie said the

group was created after Sarah Peckham advertised for
practising artists to gather at
the Wallace Hotel.

Festival ripens

By Kate Taylor

A $4000 grant will assist with the staging

and marketing of this years Strawberries
and Cherries Festival in Bacchus Marsh.
It was one of 19 state government tourism
grants awarded in the state under the
Country Victoria Events Program Grants,
which are designed to encourage small-scale
events to engage local communities and
attract both day and overnight visitors.
Held in November, the annual Strawberries
and Cherries Weekend draws thousands of
visitors to celebrate the arrival of the first
spring crop, with fresh produce available for
purchase and pick your own activities.

Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association

President David Durham welcomed the
funding, and said an application will also be
made for Bacchus Marshs Harvest Festival.
The money will be used for all the usual
things relating to the festival - Advertising,
marketing, transport because we have
shuttle bus services, merchandise and
brochures etc, he said.
Member for Melton Don Nardella said the
Strawberries & Cherries festival is an eagerly
anticipated event on the Bacchus Marsh
calendar.
I encourage everyone to get along and see
for themselves what a great show we put on.

It was a bit like any group

that gets started in Moorabool I didnt really know if
I would know anyone or not
until I got there, and then I
saw that there were a few
familiar faces I knew from
around the place, she said.

One of the purposes was to

help us to become more proactive and professional to
get us more serious about exhibiting and selling our art.
Theres usually between
seven and 13 artists at the
dinners and we all know
each other quite well now.
Everyone has their own style
and their own medium, but
we still share ideas and support each others efforts and
work.

Dear Editor,
In response to Mrs Rose
De La cruz (Letters MN 21
July) re her advice to me to
do some research into the
impact of industrial wind
turbines and human health,
I wish to inform Rose of
the fact that I have been
engaged in that occupation
for the past six years. The
most important thing I have
gleaned from this research
is the necessity to read all
the very latest studies from
both sides of the equation.
The Massachusetts Study
was produced in January
2012, quite out of date re the
size and capacity of the latest turbines, quoted in the
study as being 1.8Mg output
and with a height of 50 to 75
metres. In the Moorabool
Shire, WestWind plans to
erect turbines to a height of
162 metres and 3 to 4 mg. in
capacity. It is like compar-

ing a Morris Minor with a

B Double truck. A lot of the
data produced obviously
requires further research,
especially in the area of
health and interpretation
of acoustical data. During
the recent Senate Enquiry
into wind turbines, many
eminent researchers worldwide have given compelling evidence that cannot be
ignored. There is a desperate need for full spectrum
acoustic studies to be done
before any more turbines are
erected too close to human
habitation.
The National Health and
Medical Research Council
recently agreed to conduct
research into adverse health
impacts on residents who
live within 1500 metres of
wind turbines. To quote
from their statement Given
the poor quality of current
direct evidence and the

WHATS ON

concern expressed by some

members of the community, high quality research
into possible health effects
of wind farms, particularly
within 1500 metres, is warranted. Hopefully this will
happen soon.
I have always agreed with
Roses sentiments and beliefs that renewable clean energy is a necessary part of an
environmentally sustainable
future. Unfortunately I am
being manipulated by people who want to discredit my
aim of protecting the health
of my family and the community in which I live.
Angela Kearns
Mt Egerton
Dear Editor,
Rose de la Cruz (The Moorabool News 21 July 2015) says
that I criticised her letter of
28 April 2015 for reporting
that a particular familys

house move was not related

to wind farms.
What Rose actually said in
the earlier letter was:
...the house referred to in
Ms Deans letter was not
owned by the mayor.
Rose did not at that time
make any statement about
the reasons for the Mayors
family move (nor would she
need to, having told us that
the home in question was
not the Mayors). She also at
that time did not make any
statement about the reason
for that non-Mayors family
home move (giving me the
impression that it was to
do with a close wind farm
development).
She now advises us that the
Mayors family move was
nothing to do with wind
farms.
What I actually said in my
letter was that:
With regard to the house

mentioned in her [my clarification: that is Roses letter

of 28 April 2015] letter, the
more important issue is that
someone is moving, rather
than who the owner is.
The issue to be resolved is
not whether renewable energy is a good thing or not, but
the fairness putting wind
turbines close to existing
dwellings, in particular, in
agricultural settings where
the residents do object.
I endeavour to debate the issues and I did not personally
attack Rose.
John Kowarsky
Ballan
Dear Editor,
I was very concerned to see
the new ABS Labour Figures
which show that Victoria is
shedding jobs under the Andrews Government.
Before the election Mr An-

drews promised 100,000 fulltime jobs within two years.

This months ABS labour
figures show that Daniel Andrews is not delivering on
his jobs promise.
Mr Andrews would need to
have delivered 25,000 new
full-time jobs in the first
six months to be on track to
meet his target. The new figures confirm that since December last year nearly 9,500
full-time jobs have been lost
in Victoria.
Instead of trying to buy
votes by announcing public
holidays that hurt local business and risk local jobs, the
Government needs to wake
up and get serious about
protecting and creating jobs.
The future of regional Victoria depends on it.

Victoria

Womens war
tales in print

By Jessica Howard

Darley has provided a backdrop to a collection of short

stories.

Between the Dances features the tales of over 300

women who lived during
the Second World War, some
of which spent their time at
the Darley Military Camp.
Established on 160-hectares
at Camerons Road Darley,
the camp saw a number of
recruits from the Australian
Womens Army Service undergo training before being
mustered into a trade.

Participants in the 2014 Defying the Drift program.

Defy the drift

and stay on
the land

Written by Melbournebased author Jacqueline Dinan, Between the Dances

tells of the camps basic
living conditions, including communal showers and
toilets without doors, strawfilled mattresses and tents or
tin huts that slept about 20
women.

In the main, recruits took a

train to Bacchus Marsh, then
clambered onto army trucks
to be transferred to Darley, a
training camp that sat on a
plateau near a gorge and was
known for its extremely cold
weather, an extract from
Jacquelines book reads.
The recruits underwent
drills, poison gas tests,
marching, lectures on hygiene, first aid, map reading,
military law and overview
of rations.

the street with a tin hat and

gas mask.

Ms Wrights memories join

hundreds of other stories
that were received by Jacqueline after she distributed a questionnaire around
Australia using Legacy
and Country Womens Associations regional branch
network.

Published in March 2015

by Ventura Press, the book
also features the story of a
current day Bacchus Marsh
resident.

I couldnt believe the

response. 300 women replied to the questionnaire
and from there I got on the
phone or visited them where
I could, Jacqueline said.

Ms Wright recalls the big

empty houses with nothing
but mesh to cover the bare
windows and walking down

They met them at the

dances, which were held in
little halls in small towns

Originally from England,

Margaret Wright contributed her story from when she
was just 19-years-old and
an enlistee in the Womens
Auxiliary Air Force.

Whilst the women spoke

primarily about their incredible war effort, they also
spoke about the men and
the good, the bad and the
naughty stories that came
with them.

such as Ballan and they provided them with so much

entertainment. That is where
the name originates from,
whilst they enjoyed these
events its really about what
the women were doing between the dances.
After three years of preparation, Jacqueline said it had
been a fascinating journey
and was grateful to have
captured the history of so
many interesting women.
The women I interviewed
are part of a very historic
generation and Ive been
lucky enough to capture this
oral history. It now holds
no expiry date, the book is
now on the shelves for generations of families to share,
explore and cherish.
Between the Dances is
available at all bookshops
and libraries for $32.95 rrp.

Young residents from Moorabool Shire are invited to

participate in an innovative
program aimed at retaining
young people on farms and
in agribusiness in Western
Victoria.
Defying the Drift is a
unique program developed
by Marcus Oldham College
and Rotary District 9780 that
includes around 60 Rotary
Clubs in Western Victoria.
The program is available
to year 10 and 11 secondary students in Moorabool
Shire considering a career
in agriculture and related
industries.
The program is centred
around a three day residential course at Marcus
Oldham College in Geelong
from Monday the 28th of
September to Wednesday
the 30th of September 2015.
Rotary District 9780 Rural
Support Committee Chairman Rob Pelletier said the
aim of Defying the Drift is

to expose participants to a
cross section of agricultural
enterprises, including leadership development.
He said participants visited
businesses operating at different stages in the chain
of production from paddock to plate while also
reecting the range of business sizes and approaches
evident in agriculture in the
21st century.
Mr Pelletier said the Defying the Drift program was
an ideal way for young men
and women in Moorabool
Shire to gain wider exposure
to different facets of Victorias agriculture industry.
It is heartening to note that
Defying the Drift appeals
equally to girls and boys,
belying the traditional image of agriculture as a male
dominated industry, he
said.
The 2014 program included slightly more boys than
girls, but overall, the pro-

gram attracts approximately

equal numbers. The more or
less equal gender involvement reects the composition of the post-secondary
programs offered at Marcus
Oldham College and other
tertiary agriculture programs, Mr Pelletier said.
Participants in the 2014
Defying the Drift program
came from towns across
Western Victoria including Bacchus Marsh, Portland, Beaufort, Maryborough, Daylesford, Geelong
East, Charlton, Terang and
Wendouree.

Defying the Drift, including
a downloadable application
form and online enquiry
form, can be found at www.

Schools out
By Jessica Howard

TOM

After four decades of teaching, a St Brigids Primary

School teacher has put away
her chalk for the last time.
Diane Johnson was farewelled by the school on Friday, June 23 after 40-years of
teaching - 20 of which were
spent in Ballan.
The grade prep teacher was
celebrated with a farewell
mass and a ride in a Harley
Davidson sidecar.
Mrs Johnson said whilst
retirement was quite daunting, she was excited to move
onto the next stage of her life.
Its overwhelming when
something you have done
for so many years of your life
just doesnt exist anymore,
but it is obviously really
positive too, she said.
I have really enjoyed what
Ive done but am also looking forward to the next
chapter.
And an exciting chapter that
will be, with Mrs Johnson
soon flying out to Italy for
12-months with her husband
and previous St Brigids Primary School principal, Peter.
We have a little place not
far from Florence, so we will
go over and do some travelling, enjoy the wine and
smell the olives. We are also
going to New Zealand to do
some skiing, she said.
I think it is important
that you have goals. To go

Blakeville resident and GWLG member Colleen Kirby in front of blackberries holding the
contract for their Grant of $20,200, to rid the area of the weed. Photo - submitted
from such a busy lifestyle to
absolutely nothing can be
confronting, so we have big
plans ahead. But I am also
looking forward to just having time to sew, to knit, to
bake and to garden.
St Brigids Primary School
principal, Gabrielle Driscoll
said whilst she had only
been with the St Brigids
community for six months,
it was very clear that Mrs
Johnson was a highly respected educator and a very
treasured lady.
Over many years all of the
children entering our school
have been given a wonderful
start to their primary school
education through the very
committed and professional

work of Dianne, she said.

While we are going to really miss Diane here at St
Brigids, we know that both
she and Peter are now embarking on the next exciting
phase of their life.
Mrs Johnson said she would
miss St Brigids Primary
School, in particular the look
on her students faces upon
learning something new.
Just the joy on their faces
when they discover something they can do, such as
reading that is a vision that
will stay with me for the rest
of my life, she said.
Any time I saw it, the joy
for me was always equal. It
never diminished.

Blackberries on notice

By Jessica Howard
The war against the blackberry bush weed could be
nearing its end thanks to
valuable funding received
by the Greendale Wombat
Landcare Group.
With a community grant
worth $20,200, the local
group will now be able to
undertake works to rid the
Colbrook and Blakeville areas of the invasive weed.
President Simon Lidgett
said the group was going to
call a meeting for landholders in the area in order to
finalise plans for the project,

which would start during

the growing season in November and December.
Even with the whole area
treated, there will still be
regrowth of new plants but
these will be much easier to
control by land managers,
he said.
Two to three years followup and the area should
be pretty well clear of the
problem.
The blackberry is considered one of worst weeds in
Australia due to its potential
to spread and economic and
environmental impacts, and
was declared a weed of na-

Environmental Opinion

tional significance in 1999.

The project has been made
feasible by a Port Phillip
and Westernport Catchment
Management
Authority
community grant.
Mr Lidgett said his group
was delighted to receive
the funding and expects
landowners and public land
managers to co-invest in the
project.
We have already got farmers in the Blakeville area
ready to start.

Safeguarding human health and existence

I wrote recently about the

government of the Netherlands being ordered by the
legal system to increase its
use of renewable energy.
If you want more on this I
suggest you go to this website a very positive thing
happening in an otherwise
negative climate change
action world. The website
is - http://www.edotas.org.
au/climate-litigation-watchmarjan-minnesmas-presentation/.
The recent document from
the Lancet Commission on
planetary health is no lightweight read and I must say
one of the characteristics
of scientific reports on anything, but especially on climate change, is that they are
thorough and detailed. It is
as if the researchers feel the
need to support everything
and anything with extremely rigorous evidence and

realms of paper. Of course

thorough research goes
without saying but reading such research does take
some time. Maybe it is better
to shout ridiculous claims
than read long research
papers. At least those who
shout the loudest against
climate change dont seem to
have devoted much time to
reading such works as this.
That is not to mention the
latest Papal document on climate change which is itself
somewhat of a tome.
Anyway back to the latest
Lancet Commission report
on planetary health, this
time entitled Safeguarding human health in the
Anthropocene epoch by
a longish list of researchers, again a necessary accompaniment these days
against climate deniers. I
thought it might be an idea
to include the entire list to

acknowledge these people

who spend their lives, not
raising money or climbing
corporate ladders, but doing research on our behalf.
The list; Sarah Whitmee,
Andy Haines, Chris Beyrer,
Frederick Boltz, Anthony
G Capon, Braulio Ferreira
de Souza Dias, Alex Ezeh,
Howard Frumkin, Peng
Gong, Peter Head, Richard
Horton, Georgina M Mace,
Robert Marten, Samuel S
Myers, Sania Nishtar, Steven
A Osofsky, Subhrendu K
Pattanayak, Montira J Pongsiri, Cristina Romanelli,
Agnes Soucat, Jeanette Vega,
Derek Yach. This report goes
for 56 Pages, has 400 references at its end and many
graphs throughout that all
point upward at a growing
rate. The graphs that were so
well highlighted by Al Gore
in An Inconvenient Truth
are shown in this report, as
in all others I have read, to be

all too accurate.

What this report says, in
brief is: 1. the concept of planetary health is based on the
understanding that human
health and human civilisation depend on flourishing
natural systems and the wise
stewardship of those natural
systems. However, natural
systems are being degraded
to an extent unprecedented
in human history. 2. Environmental threats to human
health and human civilisation will be characterised
by surprise and uncertainty.
Our societies face clear and
potent dangers that require
urgent and transformative
actions to protect present
and future generations. 3.
The present systems of governance and organisation
of human knowledge are
inadequate to address the
threats to planetary health.
We call for improved gov-

ernance to aid the integration of social, economic, and

environmental policies and
for the creation, synthesis,
and application of interdisciplinary knowledge to
strengthen planetary health.
4. Solutions lie within reach
and should be based on the
redefinition of prosperity to
focus on the enhancement of
quality of life and delivery
of improved health for all,
together with respect for the
integrity of natural systems.
This endeavour will necessitate that societies address
the drivers of environmental
change by promoting sustainable and equitable patterns of consumption.
Safeguarding
human
health in the Anthropocene
epoch has a Case study entitled Environmental change:
shocks and slow motion catastrophe in Pakistan. Just
one point raised in the case

study: Surface water availability is diminishing rapidly in Pakistan. About 5000

m of water was available per
person per year in the early
1950s but by 2005 this number had reduced to 1400 m
and, if preventive action is
not taken and present trends
continue, demand is projected to outstrip supply by
2025. Climate change is likely to increase water stress.
The amount of water flowing
into Indus River might decrease by as much as 3040%
in the next 20 years.
Indeed we can see that all
governments need to act,
and maybe we need to take
all governments to court
over this vital issue. Viva the
Netherland claimants.
What is your opinion?
Next MEG meeting: Thursday July 30th Ballan Community House 7.30pm.
All Welcome.

Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV
Over the next 25 years
the number of one-person
households in Australia will
increase by 65 per cent. The
Australian Bureau of Statistics predicts that by 2036
about 3.4 million of us will
live alone.
That will mean single buyers, already one of the largest property buying groups,
will be an increasing proportion of real estate agents
clients. These buyers include
all age groups: young, first
home buyers; buyers in their
middle years, those recently
divorced or ending a property-sharing arrangement;
and elderly buyers. And of
course solo buyers of all ages
upgrade, upsize and downsize and buy for investment,
just as buyers with partners
and families do.
In 2010 the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institutes report on Australias
changing patterns of home
ownership found rates for
singles aged 25 to 44 had
increased by 8.1 per cent in
the decade to 2006. Home
ownership by single parents
was also up.
So the traditional first
home buyer a young couple, either newly married or
buying their marital home
is just one of a number of

types of first home buyers

these days. But young single
buyers face particular challenges: they must save a deposit normally 10 per cent
of the purchase price alone
and be able to make the
mortgage repayments. And
they must select a property
they are confident they can
manage.
However the ABS also
found that this trend was
being driven by the ageing
population. In 2011, eight
per cent of people aged 15-64
were living alone, compared
with 25 per cent of people
aged 65 and over.
These single buyers are also
helping to drive the trend to
apartment, unit and townhouse living across Victoria,
with increasing apartment
construction in regional
centres and outer suburbs,
traditionally the preserve of
the family home. The median price of a one-bedroom
apartment in outer Melbourne rose by 4.5 per cent
in the past year. In regional
Victoria the median price
of a three-bedroom unit or
apartment rose by 7.8 per
cent in the past year while
for two-bedroom units and
apartments the increase was
5.4 per cent.
Many single buyers want a
manageable property where
chores such as garden maintenance and gutter cleaning
are the body corporates
responsibility.
But while young single buyers look for an affordable
property, older single buyers
are often cashed up. Downsizing lone householders
selling a family home mean
a strong demand for quality,
high spec apartments either
in major regional centres or
closer to Melbourne.

Why More RAM is better

When it comes to improving the performance of your

computer, increasing the amount of RAM is possibly the
most effective way of boosting speed and handling power.

What does RAM do?

AUTOMOTIVE

AUTOMOTIVE

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to

hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.
(Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data
as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

State Cross Country

The 2015 Victorian

Little Athletics Cross
Country
Championships were held at
Westerfolds Park, Templestowe on Saturday.
Unfortunately Bacchus
Marsh did not have great numbers competing at this years Championships, but those
athletes that did run, represented the Centre
extremely well and should be very proud of
their results.
The course was very tough for the junior
athletes, with a steep hill mid race and a long

climb to the finish line. The intermediate

athletes started off with a fast downhill prior
to heading out into the bushland to tackle
the undulating winding trails before attacking the uphill finish. By the time the senior
athletes set off, the start area had become a
little heavy underfoot. Runners then wound
their way around a two lap course, which in
parts was a little slippery, but the athletes
dug deep and produced some great results
with many hard fought finishes.
Next Saturdays cross-country meet will
be held at Greendale Reserve starting at
10.30am

game this weekend against East Point to secure a finals birth and
the B grades have a massive challenge to still make the finals but
not out of the question.
This Saturday Bacchus Marsh will travel to East Point. Please ensure
you all make the trip to sunny Ballarat and give your support to
these teams as there are only 3 games left before finals and with
a few teams still in the running to play finals the support and
encouragement could be that little difference to bring these teams
home with the win on the day.
The Bacchus Marsh Womans Football team played Sunbury who
were too good on the day however the girls never gave up their
fight till the final siren went. The girls are still in finals contention
with Melton this weekend (at home) and then Jacana away so
please get down and give them your support.

Back to Flanagans Border Inn after the game

The Bacchus Marsh Football Netball Club will be making its way to
Flanagans Border Inn after the game against Ballarat (15/08/2015)
for a meal, drinks and to have a listen to our one and only Lozza
with her band fUnKsHuN so ensure you put this in your calendar
and get down there for a great night.

Sponsor of the Week is:

Flanagans Border Inn Hotel

Flanagans Border Inn has a very deep and entrenched history with
the town of Bacchus Marsh where it originally opened its doors in
1850. The Border Inn was essentially the means for the town to
come into existence. In 1851 it became the first coach stop on the
road to the Ballarat gold diggings (and thus the first coach-stop
in the state) and Bacchus Marsh essentially developed around this
traffic.
Flanagans Border Inn has a great Irish atmosphere and menu to
match. You can sit outside to enjoy a drink or dine within, the walls
inside are surrounded with great history and dcor so ensure you
get down for a drink or meal and have a look around.

A very special mention this week goes out to both Lauren and
Bernie for all the work that they have done not only in running the
Netball teams each and every week but also the help and support
they provide in the club house with their assistance behind the
bar and helping with clean-up etc. These 2 ladies have put in an
enormous amount of time over the years and the Bacchus Marsh
Football Netball club would like to recognise your contribution by
saying - THANK YOU.

Blues climb league ladder

Ballan Football
Results v Dunnstown
The Seniors have now
reached sixth on the league
ladder, their highest position
in over a decade, but will
have some tough hurdles in
the last three rounds of the
season. The Blues took on
the Towners on their home
ground and were in control
for the whole match. Coach
Mark Williams led the team
and kicked four majors with
Michael Snaith busy up forward. Daniel Nielsen made
life difficult for the Towners forwards and gave
great drive out of defense .
A solid performance but the
boys will need to be at their
best next week when they
take Beaufort at home. The
Crows trounced league leaders Bungaree last week and
coming into form at the right
time.
Best - M. Williams, D.
Nielsen, M. Snaith, S. Hitchings, L. Herring, K. Doyle
Final Score: Ballan 12 11 83

The Reserves also had a

good hit out and welcomed
several players from the
U18s to gain some senior
match practice. Bernie Whelan and Rod Watts booted
nine goals between them for
the day with Mark Dunne,
Bill Smith and David Bell
controlling the centre.
Best - M. Dunne, D. Bell,

Final Score: Ballan 13 10

The Under 18s continue to
gain confidence and form
at the right time of the year.
They have now risen to fifth
position on the ladder and
with a full line up will be a
formidable squad. Against
the Towners, the Blues were
never tested and Austin
Bongart was unbeatable
up forward collecting eight
goals for the day and missed
several sure shots. Zac Boland dominated the ruck
and his second efforts were
outstanding. A good win
with an exciting three weeks
to come.
Best - L. Whyte-Marshall, Z.

Final Score: Ballan 13 15 93

A shock loss by the Under

15s has made the race for
finals all the more challenging. The Blues were slow out
of the blocks and lacked the
team discipline and system.
Their opponents were more
focused and had all the answers on their home ground.
Colum Linane battled valiantly in defence but was a
lone hand. Corey Pascoe also
gave a good account when
he had his chance. The Blues
are still in the eight but there
are now six teams on 32 premiership points and a loss
could see the Blues plummet
down the ladder.
Best - C. Linane, C. Pascoe, J.
Botheras, A. Furlong

The Under 12s had a successful hit out after their last
two losses. The Blues were
full of run and keen for a
win and it showed on the
paddock, especially with
Ethans 30 metre shot at goal.
The Blues had most of the
play and kept up their tempo to the final siren. In two
weeks the Blues have their

Ballan Netball

Round 14 v Dunnstown
13&Under B
Ballan drew Dunnstown.
13&Under
Lara Casey and Maddison
Alcock dominated the defence line and, after a slow
start, were the link between
the defence and attack lines.
Hayley Taylor and Mia McConnell were consistent
throughout the entire game.
Ballan picked up momentum in the second half beating Dunnstown by 17.
15&Under
Was a good game, the girls
moved the ball well out of
defence. However the tall
pressure of Dunnstowns
defenders was extremely
difficult to break. Dunnstown 27 defeated Ballan
11. Best on court - Hannah
Sfetcopoulos.
17&Under
A disappointing loss this
week against a much better
side on the day. Final score
Ballan 26 lost to Dunnstown
33. Best on Court - Katelyn
McGregor.
C Grade
Early in the game Ballan
took it right up to Dunnstown, excellent defence all
over the court saw the girls
put the pressure on the more

A Grade
A shaky start to the game
with the A grade girls slow
to get into playing their
game. However, with various calls not going their

way they finished with a

convincing last quarter.
Sam and Broden played
an outstanding game, Sam
providing a strong target
and Broden creating space
and always there for back
up. Stacey and Kara combined well and were able to
bring the ball onto the ring
with ease. Peggy played a
strong game in WD. Nicole
took crucial intercepts and
combined well with Noni in
the circle. Ballan 31 defeated
Dunnstown 28. Best on court
- Stacey Casella.

fancied opposition. In the

second quarter Dunnstown
found their feet and started
to dominate all over the
court. Despite this the Ballan
girls continued to work hard
and move the ball into their
attack with strong drives
and passing lead by Ash Cox
in centre. Dunnstown 36
defeated Ballan 12. Best on
court - Simone Dunne.

B Grade
The girls started the game
confidently and were up
at every break throughout
the game. Everyone was
encouraging each other,
defence were taking crucial
intercepts and the attacking
end combined well. Unfortunately they couldnt finish the game the way they
began and had a very disappointing result. Mel, Kylie
and Kath combined sensationally providing ample
intercepts in the last quarter.
Bianca and Bec were strong
in the mid court providing
good feeds to the goalers.
Dunnstown 24 defeated
Ballan 20. Best on court - Rebecca Conroy.
