from the photos attached,
what could possibly be hap-
pening to our St. Augustine?
Our neighbor is having the
same problems and has treat-
ed for chinch bugs and brown
patch, but nothing seems to be
working. Any suggestions?
The photos you sent ap-
pear to have been taken in a
really sunny, hot part of your
lawn. The damage looks a
great deal like grass that has
been killed by chinch bugs.
You didn’t mention if you had
treated your own lawn, but
assuming you did, it’s entire-
ly possible that enough dam-
age was done before you got
the treatment applied that
the lawn in those areas was
too far gone to save. Your only
recourse at this point would
be to replant new sod or plugs
next spring. Beware, too, that
chinch bugs will very likely
return to the same places in
your lawn in future summers.

Where do the presidential
candidates stand on Social
Security and Medicare? I’ll
be eligible for these programs
in a few years and haven’t
been able to find anything
on their positions.

Dear Voter,
You would think that So-
cial Security and Medicare,
the government’s huge en-
titlement programs that
affect the pocketbooks of
nearly every single voting
American – either in taxes
paid or benefits received –
would get significant atten-
tion on the campaign trail.
But that’s not the case this
year.
Presidential candidates
John McCain and Barack
Obama have devoted little
time this election season
talking about Social Securi-
ty and Medicare. That may
be because both programs
(especially Medicare) are
in dire need of reform, and
the solutions aren’t likely
to make voters particularly
happy. Here are the prob-
lems that exist and where
the candidates stand.
Social Security
Social Security is facing a
long-term funding problem.
By the year 2017, Social Se-
curity will start taking in

massive baby boomer popu-
lation will be retiring in
droves. And by 2041, the sys-
tem will only be able to pay
out 78 percent of promised
benefits. To fix this financial
shortfall experts have rec-
ommended a variety of solu-
tions including:
! Raising taxes: Social
Security trustees estimate
that Social Security could be
made solvent for the next 75
years by increasing workers
payroll (FICA) tax to 14.1
percent. It’s currently 12.4
percent, split between work-
ers and their employers, up
to a wage cap of $102,000
in 2008. The cap rises every
year with inflation. Earn-
ings above that aren’t taxed
for Social Security.
! Curbing benefits: This
could be done by lowering
annual cost-of-living adjust-
ments, or by raising the re-
tirement age (currently set
to rise to 67 by 2027) to 70.
! Creating private ac-
counts: This is what Presi-
dent Bush rolled out in 2005
but it didn’t take hold. It
gives workers the option of
diverting part of their Social
Security taxes into private
accounts to invest in stocks,
bonds and/or mutual funds.
However, critics argue that
privatizing Social Security
does little to address the
long-term funding concerns.

Due to skyrocketing
health care costs, people liv-

faces much greater financial
problems than Social Secu-
rity and is much more diffi-
cult to fix.

candidates agree, that fix-
ing Medicare has to be part
of an overall change to the

It doesn’t take long to de-
termine if yellow bass are
biting. If they are present,
they will readily nail a bit of
minnow placed near bottom.
Caddo has some very unique
names for areas of the lake,
each of which is a story in
itself. Places such as Old
Folks Playground, The Ox-
bow, Devils Elbow, Govern-
ment Ditch, and Dragover
area are as familiar to Billy
as is the route many of us
take traveling to and from
work.
Caddo is the only natural
lake in Texas and steeped
in a rich history. Billy can
spend hours, and often has

Every month when I write
this column, I usually have a
big stack of reference books
by my desk. I thought this
would be a good time to share
some of my favorite refer-
ences and books. It’s always
nice to know where to look up
information about the birds
you’ve seen.
I’ll start with field guides.
My favorite is “The Sibley
Guide to Birds,” by David
Allen Sibley. It has detailed
paintings for all the regular
species in North America.
You can also get eastern or
western versions; I believe
the eastern one covers all our
Texas species. The paintings
are both beautiful and accu-
rate. Sibley describes how to
tell apart species and shows
a range map of where each
species occurs during differ-
ent seasons. “The Kaufman
Field Guide to Birds of North
America,” by Kenn Kaufman,
is another great field guide.
His guide uses digitally mod-
ified photographs and some-
times shows more than one
view of the same bird. This
is useful since birds usually
don’t sit still in a field guide
posture! The range maps
also tend to be more accurate
than in the Sibley Guide.
If you are curious about
what birds we usually have
in our area, I’d recommend
Warren Pulich’s “The Birds
of North Central Texas.” It
was written in the 1980s, but
is mostly still accurate. More
recent is The TOS Handbook
of Texas Birds by Mark Lock-
wood and Brush Freeman.
However, it covers the whole
state (with very nice maps!)
and will not be as specific to
our area. This type of book
describing bird distribution
is useful because you can find
out how common a given spe-
cies is in our area. Common
birds are just that: common;
rare ones tend to be rare. So
if you’ve identified a bird and
discover that it is extremely
rare in Wise County, you
might want to double-check

What does it eat? Where does
it live: in forests or by lakes
or in grasslands? Lives of
North American Birds by
Kenn Kaufman is a splen-
did resource giving short
summaries of what is called
the natural history of each
species. Natural history is
essentially the who, what,
when, why, how, and where
of the critter’s habits. How
many eggs does it lay? Where
does it nest? How often does
it nest? What does it eat? The
Sibley Guide to Bird Life and
Behavior (edited by Chris El-
phick and John B. Dunning,
Jr., and illustrated by David
Allen Sibley) is also great for
this, but describes this for
each family and is illustrated
with Sibley’s exquisite paint-
ings of various behaviors.
For more specifics on nesting
birds, A Guide to the Nests,
Eggs, and Nestlings of North
American Birds by Paul J.
Baicich and J. O. Harrison
is a very handy resource and
has pictures of eggs for iden-
tification.
Finally, here are a few mis-
cellaneous books that I enjoy.
A very general but useful
book is “The Birdwatcher’s
Companion to North Ameri-
can Birdlife” by Christopher
W. Leahy. It is in encyclope-
dia format, with an entry for

fun just to browse through
and pick up fun tidbits. “The
Singing Life of Birds,” by
Donald Kroodsma, is an ex-
cellent account of how and
why birds sing, with the bo-
nus that it is a great demon-
stration of the scientific pro-
cess. Bird Tracks and Sign
by Mark Elbroch, Eleanor
Marks, and C. Diane Bore-
tos is fun if you enjoy looking
at bird tracks. You will note
the “sign” part as well. He
also talks about other traces
birds leave behind, from owl
pellets to woodpecker holes
to bird droppings. Yes, you
can sometimes identify bird
droppings fairly specifically.
Connie Hagar: “The Life His-
tory of a Texas Birdwatcher”
by Karen Harden McCracken
is a delightful “natural histo-
ry” of one of Texas’s early or-
nithologists and very fun to
read for both the biography
and the bird stories in it. It’s
been one of my favorite books
for a long time. I’ll finish with
“The Dictionary of Ameri-
can Bird Names” by Ernest
A. Choate. Bird names are
listed alphabetically and you
can find out where the word
sparrow or heron came from,
or who Bonaparte’s Gull is
really named after.

MORE REASON FOR GIRLS TO
EXERCISE
If young girls need more reason to exercise than they already have, new
research indicates that exercise may protect girls from developing breast
cancer in the future. While experts have long advised middle-aged women
to increase their activity levels as a means of lowering the breast-cancer
risk after menopause, this new research shows that girls as young as 12
years can gain a similar benefit. In fact, according to the study, which
tracked nearly 65,000 nurses, those who were physically active as teens
and young adults were 23 percent less likely to develop premenopausal
breast cancer than women who grew up sedentary. The women at lowest
risk reported doing 3.25 hours of running (or other vigorous activity) a
week.
