Description of Problem/Solution:
Certain downhole conditions involving elevated temperatures and heavy perforating shock
loads can cause the Upper Shock Mount in the 2-3/4, 3-1/8 and 4-1/2 CCL assemblies to
extrude into the coil wire channel in the Upper Shock Mount Header. Small pieces may
separate and lodge around the Coil lead wire and underneath the lower end of the Diode
Assembly causing signal loss or in extreme cases, shorting or shearing of the Coil lead wire. A
solution is now available for field modification of the assemblies. This change has been
implemented into all new production assemblies since November of 2005.
The following procedure applies to the modification of the 2-3/4 (0268-000-130), 3-1/8 (0257000-130) and 4-1/2 (0266-000-130) Coil and Magnet assemblies to prevent the extrusion of
the Upper Shock Mount. Photos, text and assembly prints are provided to assist in the

Tools required for the modification:

Razor knife
Screw Starter (helpful but not mandatory)
Large, flat blade screwdriver
Medium, flat blade screwdriver
3/8, thin wall nut driver
Kapton or Teflon tape, 1/2 wide

Procedure (3-1/8 CCL used for pictorial presentation):

1. Remove the Top and Bottom Subs from the CCL Housing. Carefully push the Coil and
Magnet Assembly through the bore of the Housing until enough of the assembly is
exposed to extract it by hand.
2. Remove the top Shock Mount and Protective Tape from upper end of assembly.
3. Inspect the Top Shock Header to determine if the Extrusion Guard is already installed
as shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3.

Not: If the guard is installed, stop, there is no need to proceed as you have the
latest revision of the assembly. If the Guard is not in place, proceed to step #4.
4. Remove 2 ea. #6 32 X 1/8 Pan Head Screws from the Top Receptacle. Move the
Coil Wire to one side (Fig. 4) and remove the Top Receptacle and Diode Assembly
(Fig. 5).

5. Insert 3/8 Nut Driver into top of CCL assembly, engaging the nut profile on top of the
Contact Rod (Fig. 6). Using a large, Flat Blade Screwdriver, remove the Bottom
Receptacle and Insulator (Fig. 7).

6. Remove the Insulated Contact Rod and Diode Insulator (Fig. 8).

7. Move the Coil wire into the center bore of the Top Shock Header as shown in Fig. 9.
Remove Upper Shock Mount Header as shown in Fig. 10.

8. Place the Extrusion Guard over the Coil Lead wire as shown in Fig. 11 and insert the
Coil Lead Wire into the Upper Shock Mount Header as shown, routing it across the
wireway recess and into the center bore of the top of the Header. Insert the Extrusion
Guard into the Header as shown in Fig. 12 until it is flush.

9. Install the Header into the Magnet Sleeve and tighten. Route the Coil Wire out through
the window as shown in Fig. 13. Install the Insulated Contact Rod and Diode Insulator
(Fig. 14).

10. Install the Receptacle Insulator using the 3/8 Nut Driver (Fig. 15) and Bottom
Receptacle, using the Large Flat Blade Screwdriver (Fig. 16). Be careful to align the
slot in the Diode Insulator with the slot in the Upper Shock Mount Header before
tightening completely.

11. Install the Diode Assembly and Top Receptacle using 2 ea. #6 32 X 1/8 Pan Head
Screws as shown. A slight pressure applied to the end of the Top Receptacle will be
required to gain access to the threaded hole on the back side of the Receptacle (Fig.
17). Wrap the Coil Lead Wire as shown and secure it with the Top Receptacle (Fig.
18). A Screw Starter (shown in Fig. 1) will make the screw installation a bit easier.

12. Cover the Coil Lead Wire with several wraps of Kapton of Teflon Tape, keeping it within
the grooved area as shown in Fig. 19. Install the Upper Shock Mount (Fig. 20).

13. Install the Coil and Magnet Assembly into the Housing, install top and bottom subs.
Perform an electrical check using the Checking Casing Collar Locator procedure
provided on page 7.

CHECKING CASING COLLAR LOCATORS

Using a Digital Multimeter (Titan P/N 9000-74836) or a Digital Blasters Multimeter (Titan P/N 9000-14836):
1.

Set the meter on 20K ohm scale.

2.

Connect one lead to the top receptacle of the

Collar Locator and the other lead to the case of
the Collar Locator.

3.

The resistance should read as shown in the

table below.

4.

Set the meter to the diode position.

(See illustration.)

5.

Connect one lead to the top receptacle of the

Collar Locator and the other lead to the bottom
receptacle. Dual diodes should read from 0.5 to
0.7 volts. Quad diodes should read from 1.0 to
1.4 volts. Note that the readings assume a
temperature of 25 C (77 F) when checking.
The coil and voltage readings increase with
colder weather and decrease with warmer weather.

6.

Reverse the leads. The readings should be the same.

Note 1: Taking a reading from the bottom receptacle to the top receptacle does not indicate the condition of the
Collar Locator, but only the voltage drop of the diodes and the continuity of the circuit.
Note 2: A failure to get a reading by the method described in steps 1 through 4 above indicates no ground
between the case and the coil, or a broken coil wire. In either case, the Collar Locator will not function properly
and must be repaired.
