Livingston Township Expands Communication Methods

ivingston is expanding the ways in which residents

emergency information, the township continues to
use the Swift911 system. Livingston launched its
redesigned website in 2012, and announced its official
Facebook page on New Years Day 2014. Now, follow
@Livingston_NJ on Twitter!
We want everyone to Follow Livingston on Twitter,

Silverman. Its a great way to know whats going on, and
if you want more information, most of them have links
back to the website where you can get the whole story.

Livingston Police Department To Host Annual National Night Out

he Livingston Police Department

will hold the communitys seventh
National Night Out on Tues., Aug.
4, at the Memorial Oval. The free annual
event begins at 5:30 p.m., and will offer
participants food and soft drinks, rides,
face painting, balloons and carnival games
for children, giveaways, live bands, a DJ,
law enforcement displays, safety/security
demonstrations and anti-drug activities.
National Night Out festivities are held
nationwide and are meant to increase
awareness about police anti-crime programs that are taking place in communities. Last year, over 37 million people in
all 50 states, as well as U.S. territories,
Canada and military bases worldwide participated in the yearly event.
To help kick off the 2015 National

Night Out, the Livingston Police

Department is inviting the children of
Livingston to design a National Night Out
poster. Prizes will be awarded for the best
posters in each of the following categories:
ages 5-7, ages 8-10, and ages 11-13. All
winning posters will be displayed at
National Night Out. Complete information and rules can be found at www.facebook.com/LivingstonNjNationalNightOut.
The event will conclude with a largescreen outdoor family movie on the Oval,
which will begin at dusk. Again this year,
the police department is asking the children of Livingston to vote on which movie
will be shown. The voting page can be
found at www.westessextribune.net. The
poll is on the right hand side of the website's home page, just a little bit down from

the top. Polling will remain open until July

20, and the winning movie will be
announced in the July 23 issue of the West
Essex Tribune.
There will be displays from various
local organizations and businesses.
Organizations or local business that would

like to have a free display table at the

event, or anyone who would like to donate,
volunteer or learn more about Livingstons
upcoming National Night Out is asked to
call the Community Policing Unit at (973)
992-3000 extension #3600 or email livingstonpd@gmail.com.

College of Saint Elizabeth Receives

$2.3 Million Bequest

he College of Saint Elizabeth has

received one of its largest bequests
ever- $2.3 million from the estate
of Joseph Scavuzzo of Short Hills. The
funds will provide student scholarships in
the memory of Scavuzzos late wife,
Katherine J. Hill. It was Hills friendship
with a CSE alumna, Marian Kerwin
Koegel, 40, that prompted the bequest.
We are very thankful to Joseph
Scavuzzo and Katherine Hill for their
generosity, said CSE President Helen J.
Streubert. It reminds us, as an institution, how deeply our influence is on the
individuals and communities that we
serve. We will use these funds, as designated by her late husband Joseph, to
honor Katherine and her commitment to
nutrition and passion for the arts.
Katherine Hill and Marian Kerwin
Koegel met when working at Prudential
Insurance in Newark, both specializing in
dietetics. Hill mentored Koegel in her
position as associate manager/head dieti-

tian overseeing the establishment of food

services in regional Prudential offices.
Hill, who died in 2007, and Koegel, who
died in 2011, maintained a lifetime
friendship.
Hill graduated from Pratt Institute in
Brooklyn as a dietitian and managed
Maries Tea Room in East Orange, owned
her own catering business, then joined
Prudential working there from 19371977. She was also a cellist in the East
Orange High School Orchestra and a
member of the Plainfield Symphony
Orchestra. She retired from Prudential in
1977 and was an active volaunteer with
New Eyes for the Needy and the Millburn
Public Library.
Scavuzzo died in 2013. He was an
architect who worked during his long
career for Prudential Insurance, ConEdison and Honeywell. Born in Newark,
he was one of eight children and at the
time of his death was survived by his
brothers, Philip and Peter Scavuzzo.

Swift911 is a great system, stated
Silverman. Everyone in my family- we
have the phone numbers in there, along
with our email addresses. If theres
something going on, you can bet well
get the call, the text or the email. We want
to know whats happening; I think every-

one in town should take a minute, click on

the website link, and register everything.
With hurricane season officially started
as of June 1, the township urges all
residents to Like, Follow, and register in Swift911.
In the middle of a hurricane with no
power - thats not the time to think of
this, continued Silverman.

Swift911- do it now- and tell your

neighbors, your yoga class, your kids
karate Teacher, tell everyone, said
Silverman. The next time theres an
emergency, Id love it if every single person in town got the call, got the text, got
the email, and everyone knew what was
going on.

Livingston Senior Brings Joy To Elders With Fashion Show

By Cheryl Conway
ne high school senior has passed
on some joy and entertainment to
the seniors at the Daughters of
Israel Nursing Home in West Orange with
her annual summer fashion show.
Supported by Daughters of Israel and The
Womens League Pavillion, 17-year old
Rachel Katz of Livingston held the 2015
Annual Summer Fashion Show on Fri.,
June 26, at 2:30 p.m., at the nursing
homes auditorium. Katz began the tradition three years ago in honor of her grandparents who were residents at the nursing
home.
About 150 people who attended this
year got to see the latest in fashions, clap,
sing and enjoy.
The goal of the fashion show is very
simple- resident enjoyment, says Katz.
After witnessing the death of my grandparents and the lack of happiness and quality of life as they grew sick, I realized this
was common among many residents. The
fashion show was a different and unique
event the nursing home had not hosted
before, and it gave me an opportunity to

Take-out
Catering
& Party
Platters

bring a little bit of joy to the residents and

see them smile. I know it sounds cliche,
but making a few residents smile, sing
along to a song, or clap their hands, means
I have done my job.
Affiliated with the nursing home for
about four years, Katz began exploring
volunteer work at the home when she was
in eighth grade. She began the fashion
show three years ago.
This fashion show is dedicated Katzs
grandparents, Evelyn Roth and Robert Al
Roth, who both resided at the Daughters of
Israel nursing home.
My grandma, Evelyn, was a resident
for a mere two weeks before passing
away, say Katz. Sadly, she never had an
opportunity to participate or witness any of
my volunteer events. However, my grandpa was a resident for one and a half years
before passing away.
While they are not here to watch the
show today, I know they are watching in
spirit, says Katz. I love you and miss you
both.
With regards to models, Katz had 35
teen models/volunteers, friends of hers and

those in the community who were willing

to help with the event.
I am greatly appreciative for all of the
models efforts in supporting the event and
making it possible, says Katz. I also had
15 resident models, The residents are
escorted by teens down the runway for the
finale of the show.
Unlike the previous shows in which
clothes were donated by local retail stores,
this year, being that many of my friends
and I attended the Livingston High School
Prom, all of the models wore their prom
dresses, suits, and tuxes.
There was no cost to attend, but for
Katz the show costs her under $1,000 to
sponsor. She received a grant this year to
offset her costs.
This was the first year I was given a
large grant/budget, says Katz. Most
years I attempt to get all efforts, entertainment, decorations, etc. donated from members of the community and any costs come
out of pocket. This year I was fortunate to
have been sponsored by the Women's
League Pavilion (WLP Unit), where my
grandparents were residents, for the event.

Welcome Home An Exchange

Student This Fall

elcome home a child from

make a global connection through Host
an AFS Exchange Student. Each year,
AFS Intercultural Programs/USA, a leading international non-profit high school
student exchange for more than 60 years,
welcomes 2,500 high school students
from more than 90 countries into communities like Morristown. These students
are eager to attend a local high school,
live with a host family and discover what
America is all about.
AFS-USA is always looking for supportive host families. By hosting an AFS
Exchange student, families will help
build bridges of intercultural understanding at home and abroad while connecting
with an outstanding young person.
Area resident and AFS volunteer, Sue
Fershing, whose family hosted more than
a dozen exchange students through AFS

since 1986, said "This is the most

rewarding thing we've ever done. We
love staying in touch with our AFSers,
who come back to visit us years later. It's
not the end, it's the beginning of a lifelong relationship.
Host families provide a bed and
meals, share their daily lives with students, and help guide and support students as they would their own children.
Students come with full medical insurance and personal spending money.
Families and their hosted students

Fashion Show...
continued from page 6

the last show.

Katz does not have plans for another
show next year as she plans to attend college next year.
I hope to find someone in the upcoming months to take over the tradition, says
Katz.
I do this event every year to please the
residents, to remind them that amidst their
aches and pains, things in life can still be
enjoyable, says Katz. This is a tradition
at the nursing home that has been successful and I am very proud to have started.
Besides the fashion show, Katz has
hosted other large scale events at the nursing home including a New Year's Party on
the WLP unit with a 1950's record-hop
theme to it. Residents were encouraged to
dance and enjoy foods served on the especially themed menu; an art show in the

early spring featuring resident artwork, her

artwork, and other local artists and students from Livingston High school; and
another, Recipes and Reminiscing with
Rachel, in which she cooks with the residents each month.
I can describe this similarly to a cooking show, says Katz, a finalist in NJ Bizs
Healthcare Hero Awards of 2014 for
Volunteer of the Year in New Jersey.
Often times I coordinate the food I cook
with upcoming holidays or seasonal
events. Many of the things I cook are family recipes. In fact, the first thing I made
was my grandma's Mandel Brot (a cookie
similar to biscotti). I share stories with the
residents about my family while I cook and
they share theirs in return. I have created
meaningful relationships with the residents
as they share their stories in turn.

Livingston Mother Finds Herself And Story To Share In New Memoir

By Cheryl Conway
racey Berkowitz of
Livingston always
wanted to write a
book but admits she really
had no story to tell.
That all changed seven
years ago when her story hit
her right in her gut, literally,
when a misdiagnosis of a
parasite sickened her for
more than a year and
changed her life, surprisingly for the better. In her
recently published book,
Not My Buddy- A Woman,
A Dog And Their Journey
Toward
Healing,
Berkowitz shares her experience in a non-fiction,
inspirational memoir.
Berkowitz, 44, established her own press company, Gemini Press, and selfpublished and released her
first book June 16. The 244
page book is available in

paperback for $19.95 at the

local Barnes & Noble bookstore in Livingston, where
she recently had her first
book signing on June 18.
The book is also available
for $9.99 as an e-book
online through Amazon and
Barnes & Noble.
I always had the dream
of writing a book but I had
no story, says Berkowitz. I
just didnt have a story; joke
is, he handed me a story.
Berkowitzs story began
seven years ago, in May
2008, two days after she
brought home a new golden
retriever, Buddy. She knew
the puppy was being treated
for a parasite called giardia,
and was on an antibiotic for
three months. But two days
after she brought him home,
she also got sick and wound
up in the emergency room a
week later because she did

not have a bowel movement.

My stomach was so
descended, she describes. It
was at that point that she
was diagnosed with exhaustion, a condition caused
from a change of routine.
I was a major runner,
she describes, but when her
runs stopped for one week,
and she was taking Advil for
headaches, her stool backed
up and one thing led to
another. One action spiraled
up to the next. The doctor
put her on a laxative. She
was admitted to the hospital,
received three enemas until
it worked.
Her temporary fix, however, worsened and by
October she was facing
other symptoms along with
the constipation including
weight gain, hair loss, achy
joints, inability to digest certain foods, fatigue and even

pain when she blinked.

Constipation
and
fatigue was the worst, says
Berkowitz, who was working part-time as pre-school
teacher. I became the nonexistent mother, wife,
friend. A mother of two
twin girls at that time who
were
turning
eight,
Berkowitz says she spent
most of her time sleeping in
her bedroom or at the doctor.
I pretty much disappeared
from my life.
After five years of diagnosis
and
treatment,
Berkowitz had seen 16 different health care specialists,
spent more than $80,000 out
of pocket in medical bills
and had to take 132 pills a
day.
She was diagnosed with
Chronic Giardiasis in Aug.
2009, after suffering for 15
months, which led to

extreme chronic fatigue,

extreme constipation, hormonal imbalances and a
drastic weight gain of 40
pounds. A rectal swab, or
scraping of the anus walls,
came back positive for the
parasite.
She had suggested to the
doctors early on that she
may have had giardiasis, the
same parasite that her dog
had, but after several stool
tests came back negative,
her self-diagnosis was ruled
out. It was suggested that
humans do not get the virus,
and if they did they would
have the opposite symptoms
which include diarrhea and
weight loss.
But for Berkowitz, her
body responded the opposite
because she says I just ran
a half marathon, was training for five months prior; I
was a size two so her body

Story To Share In New Memoir...

continued from page 10

I was on a mission and nothing was going to stop me. I took
it [exercise] to the extreme.
She must have gotten it from cleaning up after the dogs
stool and it got into my system. People can also get the
parasite from unfiltered water.
Doctors are not aware, she says, because there is not
enough information on these parasites. Whatever is written
up on this is not enough, she says. The doctors were trying to do what they could with what they knew. Its a shame
I had gone this long without the diagnosis.
Being sick with the parasite has had lingering effects for
Berkowitz who now faces food allergies to gluten, soy and
dairy, and the need to take supplements. It destroyed my
digestive tract. I will have inflammation; I will get bloated,
headache, exhausted or get the runs. It will go right through
me; my fingers will swell instantly. Stress, gluten and sugar
can bring the symptoms back as Berkowitz experienced two
years later when the parasite, that went dormant, returned.
Berkowitz was treated with antibiotics for five months to
kill the parasite.
Its not an easy thing to kill, she says. According to
research by the CDC, 2.5 million cases of giardia are reported in the U.S. each year, with 20 percent chronically infected.
During her experience, Berkowitz had been writing in a
journal as an emotional outlet. After showing her parents and

friends what she had written, they were so intrigued that she
decided to write her memoir. Within six months, her first
draft was complete; and then after meeting an editor, her
book was complete two and a half years later.
The purpose of her book is to raise awareness of this
mysterious sickness and to inspire others to seek a correct
diagnosis and insist that the right tests be done.
Berkowitz says, I try to help them emotionally, physically. She also gives them advice on the type of doctors to go
to.
Its sad that people have to waste so much money, says
Berkowitz in trying to find a cure. It takes over their life
and vitality.
In her book, I share with them my experience; I shared
my emotion, she says. Unlike cancer survivors who have
support groups, survivors of rare illnesses are alone. People
start to think you are crazy, says Berkowitz. You start to
think you are crazy. The truth is, this is a condition; its
everywhere.
Berkowitz recommends her books to anyone who loves
dogs; any women who think they are living a picture perfect life; anyone trying to fund inspiration; anyone suffering from a chronic condition, serious illness or parasite; as
well as anyone who is struggling in their marriage as a wife
or as a mother.
Despite her suffering, Berkowitz says her experience
was a gift. It gave me the life I wanted.

Before she got sick, everything was about having a picture perfect life, picture perfect body. This all changed
when the parasite brought on 40 pounds. It brought out me
being the real me inside, she explains. Im the real me.
Sometimes we dont want whats handed to us, the life lessons you get from the circumstances, you become much
more of yourself- its like pulling away the layers of the
onion.
Grateful that her condition is not worse like lymes disease, lupus or multiple sclerosis, Berkowitz says, If this is
my only issue, so be it. I was worried I wasnt going to live.
To be 44 and start from scratch struggling to find who you
are on the inside.
There are eighth graders currently reading her book and
for these girls it shows them how to be authentic, how to be
yourself. Im so thrilled to show them life can be hard,
everyone can be knocked down; its all about who you are
on the inside. Im so grateful I have this opportunity to share
this message. I try to take care of myself the best I can, living with vitality and being authentic and connecting with
people.
Berkowitz also hopes to create a foundation to help others to make a difference to improve the environment, such as
laws to test for giardia and e-coli in water, and rectal swab
tests in emergency rooms rather than stool tests which are
only 50 percent accurate and colonoscopy that does not
detect this condition.

New Project Set For Brookdale Park

he start of a $1.2 million project

to replace the playground in
Essex County Brookdale Park
with state-of-the-art equipment and a
rubberized safety surface is underway.
The modernization is part of an ongoing
initiative to provide the safest and most
up to date Recreation facilities throughout the historic Essex County Parks
System.
The playground in Brookdale Park is
one of the most heavily used facilities in
our Parks System, Essex County
Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. said.
The area has become a place for chil-

dren and their parents to meet and socialize. Partnering with the Brookdale Park
Conservancy, we were able to redevelop
the playground and create a unique experience for our children that integrates the
history and natural features of the Park.
We conducted an on-line survey to
find out what the community wanted to
see in the new playground and over 500
people responded, said Mollie Smith,
president of the Brookdale Park
Conservancy. I am thrilled to say that so
much of their comments have been
incorporated into the design. We appreciate all the support that we have

Volunteers Needed

ew Jersey Blood Services, a division of New York Blood Center,

which supplies blood products
and services to 60 hospitals throughout
the state, is in need of volunteers at blood
drives. The blood service volunteer is an
integral member of the collection team
whose task it is assist donors with registration, escorting and canteen duties, and

to watch for post donation reactions.

Volunteers should have the ability to
relate to the public, be able to perform
different jobs as needed and have the
willingness to follow the rules. For additional information contact, Manager of
Community Relations, R. Jan Zepka at
732-616-8741 orrzepka@nybloodcenter.org.

received from the county executive and

the parks department and we look forward to a playground that is modern and
safe for our children.
Freeholder Vice President Brendan
Gill said, This continues the legacy of
the county executive of improving our
open spaces. Brookdale Park is a destination. You can see that by the number
of children who come here on a daily
basis. I have two young children and
knowing that my children and other children in the community will enjoy this
facility makes it worthwhile.
The project includes the complete
removal of the existing equipment and
play surfaces and combines the four separate play areas into one large playground. The new consolidated design
enhances safety by including children in
one location and will make ground maintenance more efficient for parks staff.
The entire playground will be enclosed
with a four-foot tall chain linked fence.
Play areas will be divided into two
areas: age-appropriate apparatus for

children ages 2-5 and 5-12 area. The

playground will have a rubberized safety
surface, drinking fountains, picnic
tables, park benches, bicycle racks, trash
receptacles and water misters. An existing pathway that connects the playground to the parking area will be reconfigured for handicap accessibility.
The original playground was opened
about 14 years ago. Because of its age, it
has been difficult to find parts to repair
broken apparatus and several play attractions have been removed.
Remington & Vernick from Secaucus
received a $52,975 contract to design the
new playground. Tec-Con from East
Orange was awarded a publicly bid contract for $1,222,410 to perform the construction work. The Essex County
Department of Public Works will monitor the project to answer questions and
avoid delays. The playground modernization is being funded with a grant from
the Essex County Recreation and Open
Space Trust Fund. It is scheduled to be
completed by the fall of 2015.

A Summer Solution To Odors

And Bug Bites

ummer brings sunshine and beach

days, but also musty, mildew odors
and pesky biting insects. Anyone
who has ever opened a beach house or lake
cabin, a boat or even a storage space for
summer equipment knows what that first
whiff is like. Bet the smell is there now.
And why should anyone have to live
with unpleasant odors, like animals such as
a wet dog, kitty litterbox, ferret; cooking
odors from things that are yummy to eat
but less so when lingering in the air: fish,
broccoli, bacon, clams; and the smells of
everyday living: powder rooms, diapers,
sick rooms, shoe closets?
Destroy those odors and germs, safely.
The Lampe Berger fragrance system
destroys odors safely and effectively. Its
unique system of catalysis actually
removes odor moleculesnot just masking them. Created in 1898 to purify the air
in French hospitals, it also remains the
foremost system available for killing airborne germs- great inside during cold and
flu season.

Lampe Berger is so much safer to use

than a candle. First light the burner and
flame it for only two minutes. Then blow it
out. It continues to burn with no open
flame and no danger of fire or injury to
pets and people. Extinguish the catalytic
burner with a solid snuffer cap.
Add fine fragrance to the air. Lampe
Berger offers over 50 fragrances for their
system. All are developed by fine French
perfumers, based on natural scents. Unlike
most candles, Lampe Berger alcohol-based
fragrances are tested by independent labs
for complete safety: no smoke and no carcinogens like benzene, styrene, naphthalene, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde.
Beyond their unscented neutral, the
scents can be fresh- like rain, ocean, clean
linen or citrus; relaxing like lavender or
green tea; and can evoke memories of
childhood or happy times. There are fruit
and baking scents, heavenly holiday fragrances, woods and spices. Everyone can
find a favorite!

Did You Know?

ccording to the College Board

Annual Survey of Colleges, the
average published tuition and fee
price for full-time, in-state students at public
four-year colleges during the 2014-15
school year was $9,139. That marks a nearly 3 percent increase from the preceding
year, but its still a considerable bargain
when compared to the tuition and fee costs
full-time, out-of-state students attending
four-year public colleges will have to pay.
Such students paid $22,958 for the 2014-15
school year, a 3.3 percent hike from the year

before. Such figures do not include the cost

of room and board, which averaged roughly
$9,800 for the 2014-15 school year at public
four-year colleges (in-state and out-of-state).
Private, non-profit, four-year colleges
remained considerably more expensive than
their public counterparts, costing students an
average of more than $42,000 per year for
tuition, fees and room and board during the
2014-15 school year. The 3.7 percent rise in
tuition and fees at such institutions also represented the highest average increase of any
four-year colleges or universities.

and without a minimum balance in an
account.
You dont have to wait for your

convenient for people.

Customers can get their funds immediately. Just endorse the check, show an

the website. Its as easy as that. There
are no holds, no delays, and no red tape,
just fast and friendly service with a
smile!
At Cash Centers of NJ, customers pay
a two percent fee for check cashing.
We offer the lowest rates in the business and cash all types of checks, no matter how large or small including payroll

money orders.
In addition to check cashing, money
orders are sold as well as wire transfers
and debit cards for a separate fee.
Instead of carrying cash, individuals
can purchase a pre-loaded Visa debit card
for a designated amount.
Wilson opened his first check-cashing

Orange, Orange, Bloomfield and other
areas. Each of his stores also features an
added business in the lobby like designer

Besides the convenience of cashing
checks, customers will experience great

customer service and friendliness by

company workers.
We build a personal relationship and
rapport with the people, says Wilson.
Hours for the East Hanover store are

Assemblyman Jay Webber wants to
ensure the long-time practice of shoveling
the white stuff for extra money, especially
for enterprising youths, is preserved.
Webber sponsors legislation, A-4213, that
allows the unregulated solicitation to shovel snow within 24 hours of a predicted
snowstorm. The Assembly State and Local
Government Committee recently advanced
the bill.
The measure is in response to an incident in Jan. in which two Bridgewater teens
were distributing fliers advertising their
snow shoveling services the night before a
snowstorm was forecast to hit. The boys
were stopped by police and told they were

violating a local law prohibiting unpermitted solicitation.

Kids have been shoveling snow for
extra cash probably since snow shovels
have existed, said Webber, R-Morris,
Essex and Passaic. Those two young men
saw an opportunity to use their time off
from school wisely by developing a plan to
make money. Instead, they got a lesson in
ridiculous government bureaucracy. What
they did showed initiative that should have
been commended, not punished. Common
sense needs to prevail in these situations,
and this measure helps ensure that it will.
Webbers bill will supersede any municipalitys ordinance that prevents an individual from offering snow shoveling services
within 24 hours of a forecasted snowstorm.

Valerie Fund Walk Rings In Tenth Birthday

With One Million Dollars Raised

ore than 4,000 walkers and runners came out to Essex Countys
Verona Park on Sat., June 13, in
support of The Valerie Funds Annual
Walk and JAG Physical Therapy 5K Run
raising more than $1 million to benefit
children with cancer and blood disorders.
For the fourth year in a row, fundraising
efforts by more than 200 teams and corporate sponsorships raised the proceeds that
will benefit the seven Valerie Fund
Centers, which provide comprehensive
health care and services for children with
cancer and blood disorders. These centers
are located in top pediatric hospitals in
New Jersey, New York and metropolitan
Philadelphia.
The Valerie Funds Annual Walk has
now raised more than $5 million since
2006.
Major sponsors including JAG Physical
Therapy, US Trust, Wakefern, The Edwin
and
Suzanne
Goldstein
Family
Foundation,
The
Silver
Family
Foundation, Barnabas Health and Atlantic
Health System continue to be the founda-

tion of the events success.

The individuals and businesses donating to the walk have made it a priority to
support the communities in which their
employees live and work. In store and
restaurant campaigns ranging from one to
six weeks were conducted at Shoprites
owned by the Inserra, Saker and Sumas
(Village) families and at more than 130
Burger King locations.
Walk Chair Abby Goldberg said, The
walk is such a special event. There is
music, games, food and give-always but
most of all the park is full of warmth. You
look around and see all the brave TVF
kids, the appreciative parents and thousands of friends and family cheering them
all on. The day is a resounding win for our
kids, Team Green!
Ed Goldstein, co-founder of The Valerie
Fund, said, What a sight. Seeing a sea of

gold by caring people who wanted to help
our Valerie Fund children get a second
chance in life to beat this hideous disease.
And it will happen with everyone's support.
Over the past decade, this premier
fundraiser has grown steadily over time- in
attendance, number of donations and sponsorship participation.
After their nine-year-old daughter
Valerie succumbed to cancer, Sue and Ed
Goldstein were determined that no family
should have to travel great distances to
receive state-of-the-art medical care.
Along with a group of close friends, they
began fundraising efforts from their living

room-tireless work that would lead to the

1977 opening of NJs first pediatric oncology facility at Summit Overlooks
Hospital.
Today, there are seven, not-for-profit
Valerie Fund Centers located in NJ, NY
and metropolitan Philadelphia staffed with
social workers, counselors, psychologists
and child life specialists. The hallmark of
The Valerie Fund services ensures that
families and hospitals do not have to rely
on insurance reimbursements to receive
the range of support of a multi-disciplinary
team. More than 4,000 children with cancer and blood disorders are treated annually- a network that is one of the largest of its
kind in the country.

The Rose House Offers Kindness

For Those With Developmental Disabilities

By Ejvind Boccolini
ll throughout northern New
Jersey, an organization is helping
adults with intellectual and/or
developmental disabilities lead more
meaningful lives as they become integrated into the community and workforce
more and more.
The Rose House, in Morris Plains, is a
"non-profit organization, providing person-centered programs for developmentally disabled adults, helping them to pursue their goals and dreams, and become
valued members of their communities,"
their website reads.
Earlier this month, Tom Mitchell of
the Rose House spoke in a phone interview about upcoming programs and the
help they have given individuals with
intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
The Rose House serves adults with
Intellectual
and
Developmental
Disabilities (IDD) such as Down

Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome and

Autism Spectrum Disorders. Its contact
information is info@TheRoseHouse.org;
and its website is TheRoseHouse.org.
Mitchell said The Rose House has
programs to help out families with an
IDD individuals, and the men and women
themselves, visiting their homes for possibly a few hours each day or each week,
depending on the level of care. There are
different levels of vocational training and
"self-directed" supports as well, and IDD
individuals also visit the community for
activities.
In Parsippany, at the Parsippany PAL,
there is the Rose House Cafe, a community center-type facility in which IDD
men and women serve tasty muffins,
soups, salads, chips and hot dogs to the
members and occasional members of the
community. This is one example of how
IDD men and women have been trained
and integrated into the workforce, each
gaining a personal uplift and creating a

more meaningful life for themselves.

The Rose House also has four group
homes, and 10 apartments in northern NJ,
offering residential possibilities for men
and women. There are two group homes
in Budd Lake, one in Morris Plains, and
10 apartments in Hanover. They are in
the process of purchasing a house in
Parsippany as well.
Training and education in independent
living skills can allow individuals to
enter into these residential living spaces.
They gain skills in cooking, cleaning,
community shopping, and of course, job
skills such as working a cash register, for
instance.
"The more integrated the better," said
Mitchell, adding that the Rose House has
served more than 100 individuals during
its 15 years.
For these programs, families receive
partial funding from the state, and parents provide funding too. The Rose
House accepts men and women 21 and

older.
As a result, IDD men and women can
become integrated by way of community-based Residential Living Skills that
they will obtain from The Rose House;
Competitive Employment Training; Job
Sampling for High School Seniors (graduating seniors can become involved
though not yet 21); and Healthy Choices,
a three-session course on cooking your
own healthy, tasty meals, designed
specifically for people with developmental disabilities and their caregivers.
Rose House is planning a 5K run/walk
at County College of Morris in Randolph
for Oct. 11. Check its website, the
RoseHouse.org closer to the event to
confirm the details.
Individuals qualify for the Rose House
services via referrals from the state
Department
of
Developmental
Disabilities, Easter Seals, and also via
referrals from NJ high schools.

Vista Parking Unlocks The Key To Secure,

Convenient Parking

By Cheryl Conway
oing on a trip, whether business or pleasure,
can be stressful especially if it involves driving
to the airport, deciding where to park in crowded lots, remembering where the car is parked, getting
the luggage out of the vehicle and then finding the
means to get to the gate in time for a flight.
A lot of these concerns can be avoided for those drivers who choose Vista Parking for their off-site parking
destination. Located directly across Newark Liberty
International Airport, customers can park their car valet
style in a secure 24-hour access lot before they even get
to the busy airport and then receive car-door to airportdoor service any time of day without any wait.
Family operated and owned since 1988, Vista
Parking has been providing the most convenient means
of off-site parking for travelers who use Newark
Airport.
The service at Vista Parking is much more convenient than long-term because its a door to door service,
says the company president. Customers are immediately greeted by a van; theres no waiting for shuttles, not

waiting every 15 minutes. We take you on demand; you

come in, we are ready to go. Unlike other lots, They
are not walking through long dark parking lots in snow
or far away.
What used to be four or five lots at Newark Airport
has grown, but at Vista Parking customers can park
before they get to the airport.
We are right there, says the owner. We are located
right when you come off 78; right at the end of the exit,
right at exit 58B; or exit 14 off of the NJ Turnpike
located at the Howard Johnsons Hotel in Newark.
At Vista Parking, award winning service is provided; cars are kept in a safe and secure lot; and service is
available 24 hours a day.
Customers get free shuttle service to the airport, just
a three minute ride. We drop you off right at the terminal and pick you up right at the terminal. Also offered
are corporate rates, fast check out, all valet parking, frequent parker rewards club, luggage assistance and security.
All size vehicles are welcome and there is no minimum to days parked.

We are very customer service friendly, he said.

Once you pull in you dont have to pull your bags. We
clean off your car when it snows. Theres nothing worse
than coming home from the Bahamas and theres two
feet of snow on your car. We make it so simple for you.
It starts and finishes so nice. This is valet; the car is
brought up to you, warmed up on a cool night.
According to the website, At Vista Parking, you
wont have to worry about navigating massive parking
garages or where you parked your car. All you have to
do is call the number on your claim ticket and one of our
shuttles will be dispatched to meet you at the arrival terminal and return you to your vehicle.
At random parking lots, cars can be stolen, misplaced, sometimes people forget where they parked their
car or what row they are in. If you have a problem with
your car when you get back, it just brings aggravation.
Cost to park at Vista Parking is reasonably priced at
$48 a day for short term parking; and $13 to $14 a day
for long-term parking. For more information, go to

Upcoming Annual Golf Event Supports Kids With Cancer

By Cheryl Conway
ineteen years ago, at the age of six,
Carlos Raymond Saavedra of
Wayne was diagnosed with cancer
and told he would have less than four
months to live.
When he was sent to St. Judes Childrens
Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. to
undergo experimental treatment, along with
seven other children, he beat the odds and
was the lone survivor.
To honor Carlos and his survival against
medulloblastoma, a cancerous tumor found
in the brain stem, his family set up a foundation- The Carlos Raymond Saavedra
Foundation (C.R.S.)- in his name to support
St. Judes, cancer victims and their families.
The foundations annual golf outing
fundraiser raises thousands of dollars for
this cause.
The Fifth Annual Carlos Raymond
Saavedra Foundation Golf Outing is set for
Wed., Sept. 23, at the Preakness Valley Golf
Course in Wayne. Shot gun start is at 9:30
a.m.; dinner, drinks and silent auction will
continue at 5 p.m. at the Carriage House.
Prizes will be awarded in different areas

like the longest drive and closest to the pin.

Cost is $150 per person, includes dinner;
$85 without dinner; and $75 dinner only.
Golf cart included. With 80 golfers last year,
golf outing organizers are hoping to attract
100 golfers this year.
The event is open to the public for both
men and women. Everyones invited; its a
good fun day, says Denise Caposella, original foundation founder and president.
Caposella and her husband, Michael,
who chairs the golf event, started the foundation to honor their nephew, Carlos.
It was Oct. 11, 1996, when Carlos was
diagnosed with cancer and underwent several surgeries.
After a 15 hour brain surgery procedure, the family was told he was bleeding to
death. So the doctors stopped the surgery
and closed him up. While everyone was
devastated with the news, God gave Carlos
Raymond a miracle and the bleeding miraculously stopped.
Carlos went to St. Judes Childrens
Research Hospital to undergo an experimental protocol with seven other children,
who all died but him, explains Caposella.

Pictured, from left, is Michael Caposella, Carlos Raymond Saavedra, and Carlos Saavedra Sr.

Carlos was left almost completely deaf

with some learning disabilities. His parents,
Linda and Carlos Sr., struggled to pay for all
the costs and relied heavily on donations.
We started it in his honor to pay it forward because he was so fortunate, says
Caposella. The foundation pays St. Judes to
help other families pay for children battling

again this summer to that camp, where
Carlos was a camp counselor last year.
Since the foundation was established,
C.R.S. has donated $23,000 so far, with
$11,000 to St. Judes; and the remaining
helping nine families in the U.S. and to the
campers.
Carlos, the honorary chair of the foundation, is thrilled to have the foundation. It
gives him a sense of purpose; it gives him a
good sense of being; he likes to pay it forward, says Caposella.
Carlos started his own online hat company last year with his two younger sisters,
Larraine and Natalia. The cancer treatments
have left him bald and sensitive to others
who do not have hair. For every hat that is

purchased, another hat is donated to a child

with cancer. Called Halo Hats, all kinds of
hats are sold such as ski caps, golf hats, sun
hats. He also provides the hats for each
golfer at the C.R.S. Golf Outing and even
passed out hats to patients at St. Judes.
A small foundation, the C.R.S. Golf
Outing is the only fundraiser held. Golf was
the chosen event as Michael Caposella volunteers on the Paterson Fire Dept., and figures since most firemen like to golf he
knew he could get firemen to go, says
Caposella.
With such a good time had every year,
they say Im bringing back a four-some
next year, says Caposella. We started it
with 50 golfers; it has grown.

In 1903 Thomas Edisons Studio Created Cinematic History & NJs Lackawanna
Railroad Became The Union Pacific Railroad In The Great Train Robbery

by Michele Guttenberger
he 21st Century still carries the tradition of the summer hit movies at local theaters. New Jersey can be
proud of its renowned cinema heritage as the foremost movie production location that created the first outdoor
action adventure movies. The seeds of the movie industry
were planted in the last decades of the 19th Century with its
original landmark footprints in New Jersey. It all started in
1888 when Eadweard Muybridge, a world famous photographer stopped by Edisons lab in West Orange to meet with
him to show off his zoopraxiscope. It was a machine that
projected images from rotating glass disks in rapid succession to give the impression of motion. Muybridge wanted to
partner Edison's phonograph invention with his
"Zoopraxiscope" to combine sight with sound. Edison was
more fascinated with Muybridges moving image concept
than he was with his animation machine. Edison decided to
venture into the moving picture business with his own innovations and gave the research and development project to his
employee William K.L. Dickson. Dickson an English engineer often pleaded with Edison to approve experiments for
moving pictures. Edison had little interest in these motion
pictures ideas Dickson presented but, that soon changed
after his meeting with Muybridge. The result was the
Kinetograph camera and the Kinetoscope viewer both
patented in 1891. By December 1892, the first motion picture studio was erected in West Orange NJ. Movies were

being produced in the Black Maria studio location up until

1901. The Edison studio then moved their set production to
New York City with a new glass-topped studio building that
could let the sunlight in and protect the movie work from
inclement weather. The first movie cameras depended on
very bright natural sunlight to shoot a scene.
The Kinetograph was a huge wooden camera the size of
an average doghouse that Edison even called it The
Doghouse. The camera was so large it took two men to
move it. It was this doghouse camera that shot one of the
first outdoor adventure films that movie historians claim is
one of the greatest films in cinematic history. The Great
Train Robbery was shot at various outdoor locations. It was
a one-reeler action flick, 10 minutes long, 14-scenes, directed and photographed by Edwin S. Porter. The 1903 film
pulled all the stops on modern filming innovation. It used a
number of cutting edge techniques for the first time which
included parallel editing, minor camera movement, location
shooting and camera placements that were not stage-bound.
It included sophisticated jump-cuts or cross-cuts and provided a refined editing technique that showed two separate lines
of action events happening continuously at duplicate times
in different places. The Great Train Robbery was inspired by
a real robbery that took place on August 29, 1900, when four
members of George Leroy Parker's (Butch Cassidy) 'Hole in
the Wall' gang seized the Union Pacific Railroad No. 3 train
in its tracks near Table Rock, Wyoming. Not one scene was

filmed on the western expanse of Wyoming but places such

as Dover, West Orange, Essex County Park, Orange
Mountains, and the Lackawanna Railroad of New Jersey. It
was Thomas Edisons film team of northern New Jersey that
started the magic of cinematography and ignited the extraordinary world of Hollywood that now has a legacy that
expands three centuries.
