WELCOME
NABJ
PRESIDENT
Dear Family,
Hello NABJ! Welcome to Minneapolis for the 40th
Anniversary Convention and Career Fair.
This week we will honor the 44 men and women who
founded NABJ at a time when Black journalists found
it difficult to obtain employment in mainstream media
organizations and those who were hired had a hard time
getting promoted. In addition, coverage of our community
was often unfair and filled with stereotypes.
These issues still exist and that is why we are here together.
Along with celebrating our founders, networking with colleagues and greeting old friends, we hope you
will take advantage of training opportunities to keep your skills sharp and help you remain competitive
in our changing world of journalism. You can talk to dozens of hiring managers from traditional and new
media companies.
As always we will work hard during the day and let our hair down at the Minneapolis Chapter Party on
Thursday and the Sports Task Force Jam on Friday. We will honor the best in journalism at the Salute To
Excellence Gala on Saturday, August 8, 2015.
I want to thank our convention team, especially Chair Rod Hicks, Programming Chair Deirdre Childress
Hopkins and Special Events Chair Leisa Richardson. I also want to thank our staff. It is small but they plan
and execute the convention with little outside help. I cant say enough about how hard they work.
Finally I want to thank you for being a member of NABJ. You ARE NABJ and every good thing we stand
for starts with you.

Sincerely,
Bob Butler

CONVENTION CHAIR
Greetings,
We are thankful to the 44 African-American journalists
who left their newsrooms across the country nearly
four decades ago to attend a meeting at the Sheraton
Park Hotel in Washington, D.C., where they founded
the National Association of Black Journalists. We will
celebrate them this week, along with the dozens of
others who have served in NABJ leadership roles over
the years. That group includes our 20 presidents, board
members, heads of task forces, committees and special
projects, and those who supported NABJ simply by paying
membership dues or attending events.
As we commemorate the struggle of our founders to prod media organizations to hire black journalists
and treat them fairly, we do so against a backdrop of heightened attention to race and racism in America.
From police shootings of unarmed African Americans and an attempt by a young man to start a race
war by killing nine black Christians inside their church, to debates over the Confederate battle flag and
whether a person can adopt a race that was not theirs at birth, race has become a central theme for
America in 2015. Our main plenary session will lend insight to this national discussion.
Our workshop offerings will provide training in a variety of areas, from traditional skills in broadcast,
sports journalism, photojournalism and daily print journalism, to concepts on the cutting edge of social
media management and multimedia journalism. Our goal is to offer our members four days of education
focused on the skills necessary to pursue their dream careers.
A dedicated team of volunteers spent nearly a year working with the NABJ staff and leadership to make
the 40th anniversary gathering memorable. You will find this convention educational, engaging and
entertaining, and we appreciate the opportunity to present it to you.

PROGRAM CHAIR
WELCOME!
I want to warmly welcome everyone to our Ruby
Anniversary, the 40th annual Convention & Career Fair
for the National Association of Black Journalists. It has
been an honor to lead the Programming Committee,
a team dedicated to the learning experiences for our
Members and to the economic success of our beloved
organization.
Minneapolis, home of Twin Cities Black Journalists (TCBJ),
will welcome the largest organization of journalists of color
and the nations largest career fair for journalists. We have
focused on learning offering writing, interviewing and audio
techniques; mobile tools; digital skills; and career coaching to push you upward into the Executive Suite.
Many workshops, special presentations and our top plenary all have the underlying theme that
#BlackLivesMatter. Our programming is designed because #BlackCareersMatter and our membership,
from our dynamic 44 Founders to aspiring students, is NABJs most important asset. We can all Ask
Allison when Founder Davis leads Digital Media Bootcamp, we can chat with friends like Eric Deggans,
Wes Lowery and Errin Whack about covering stories on Travyon Martin, Michael Brown and Eric Garner,
and even earn a degree in digital reporting from NBCUniversity.
To President Bob Butler, Convention Chair Rod Hicks and Board of Directors, thank you for your
leadership in challenging times and entrusting us with programming in Boston and for this very historic
week. We also deeply appreciate Executive Director Daryl Matthews, Program Manager Scott Berry and
all of our wonderful NABJ Staff for the energy in driving NABJ forward!
20
With my programming colleagues, deputies Melanie Eversley and Ken Lemon, and the task force leaders
who offered learning experiences, we wish each Member every great success here in the Twin Cities.
We hope that your experience will exceed your expectations and be challenging as well as rewarding.

SPECIAL EVENTS CHAIR
Greetings my fellow NABJers,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the
National Association of Black Journalists 40th
anniversary celebration and Convention and Career
Fair. Its hard to believe our organization has been
fighting for diversity in journalism for four decades. Its
even harder for me to believe that it has been 29 years
since I attended my first convention in Dallas while I was
a copy editor at The Cincinnati Enquirer. Weve come a
long way.
I have been honored to serve as your special events chair. Our
team has worked to bring you a collection of digitally-focused, hard-hitting
and relevant sessions to get you thinking and fired up to do better journalism.
Get yourself in the right mindframe of inspiration and fellowship by attending the 40th Anniversary
Celebration Program on Wednesday night. Then, get ready to learn.
Our Race in America plenary on Thursday moderated by MSNBCs Joy-Ann Reid will focus on timely
issues ranging from voting rights to the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of police to the
horrific attack in Charleston.
Fridays W.E.B. DuBois plenary focused on the Bring Back Our Girls movement will feature one girl who
managed to escape the Nigerian terror group Boko Haram.
22
On Saturday, for the first-time the NABJ town hall becomes part of the regular convention lineup. Michael
Lomax, head of the United Negro College Fund, joins local educators for a discussion on education
disparities and how communities can work to buck the trend. Later that night, dont miss the opportunity
to honor your colleagues and toast our 40th anniversary at the Salute to Excellence Gala and Awards
Ceremony.
Finally, before you head home to produce more great work, fill your spirit with food, fellowship and
music at Sundays Gospel Brunch which will feature national recording artists and the return of the NABJ
anniversary choir.
I hope you enjoy what weve planned. Have a fun and meaningful convention experience.
Best,

HONORARY CHAIR
Dear NABJ members, honored guests and convention
attendees,
It is truly an honor and privilege to welcome you to
the 2015 annual convention and 40th anniversary
celebration of the National Association of Black
Journalists. It is with great pride that I invite you to
enjoy what the wonderful city of Minneapolis has to
offer. I hope your visit will be exciting, enriching and
enlightening.
There is much to see and do in the Minneapolis-St. Paul
metro area, which we call the Twin Cities. Many visitors
come to experience one of the countrys largest indoor shopping
facilities, the Mall of America. The region also is home to a thriving arts and
entertainment community that can be experienced at any of the areas stellar live music venues and a
number of theaters that regularly host productions by established Broadway producers.
There also are many sites that offer cultural exhibits, including an art museum as well as a variety of sites
that feature ethnic-oriented displays. In sports, the Twin Cities is home to a number of professional teams
covering football (Vikings), basketball (Timberwolves), baseball (Twins) and, of course, hockey (The Wild).
Minnesota is commonly referred to as the Land of 10,000 Lakes. You can easily access lakeside
facilities within minutes of the Twin Cities. The area also offers some of the best public golf courses, and
Minnesota boasts more golfers per capita than any other state.
28
We are especially pleased to serve as the host for NABJs 40th anniversary gathering and believe
your visit will be rewarding. With the convention theme being Celebrating Milestones, Leveraging
our Legacy, it is our intent to help make this event one that NABJ will remember as a key part of its
continuing journey.
With the many challenges facing journalism, we are excited to be part of this important and invigorating
meeting and look forward to engaging and enlightening conversations with attendees.
Again, welcome to Minneapolis.

LOCAL CHAPTER
President
Greetings NABJ!
Welcome to the Twin Cities! Our chapter is thrilled to be
hosting NABJs 40th Anniversary Convention in August,
though wed still show you a great time in January. Stop
laughing. Were totally serious.
When youre not at the convention center sharpening your
skills in a workshop or cruising the job fair, we hope youll take
time to explore Minneapolis and St. Paul. Theres a ton to do.
You can walk, run or bike along the Mississippi River or the Chain
of Lakes of four of the states largest lakes in south Minneapolis.
There is amazing live music offered at a number of venues (we strongly
recommend catching Mint Condition at First Avenue on Thursday night). You
can spin through exhibits at area museums that are rolling out the welcome mat for visitors (the Walker Art Center
is honoring the legacy of local legend and photographer/musician/writer/director Gordon Parks on Friday, Aug. 7,
and the Minnesota Historical Society is presenting an ongoing exhibit celebrating 50 years of Ebony Fashion Fair).
Shop to your hearts content in the land that brought you Target, Best Buy and the Mall of America. You can eat
your way around the world without traveling more than a few miles to complete the tour. We boast some of the
best restaurants in the country.
You get the idea. We like it here. And we think you will, too. To help you find your way around, weve expanded
our chapters website, tcblackjournalists.org, to include a wide range of activities to explore and places to see. It
includes details on black-owned restaurants and other businesses you might want to patronize. We want to help
you make the most of your time here. And if you dont believe this place is hot in January, wed invite you to visit us
again in a few months.
In meantime, we hope you collect new skills, new friends and new memories that last a lifetime.

More than any time in recent history, race and race relations have been forced to
the forefront of the nations dialogue. From unprecedented political challenges of
long standing voting rights laws to the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands
of police, the underlying issues of racism, poverty and the widening social gaps
between blacks and whites permeate the American landscape. The continuing
trends of police bias, political, social and economic inequality have strained
relations across communities.
This year, with the most tumultuous racial events of the Obama presidency
intersecting with the 50th anniversary of the Selma march, this plenary session
will focus on how black people exist in America with the influences of racism, the
impact of that burden, and also will explore steps necessary to move forward.

Once a convict completes a sentence, there are penalties that stretch beyond
those administered in the courtroom. These are often called collateral
consequences - restrictions to employment, housing, education and other
opportunities. Some are necessary to insure public safety but others are arbitrarily
applied, and prevent the successful reintegration of convicts back into society.
People of color are disproportionately affected. The bottom line is that if people
are unable to succeed outside of prison, they are more likely to be arrested
and incarcerated again. This session will introduce participants to a searchable
database of more than 45,000 federal and state statutes regarding collateral
consequences created by the American Bar Association with a grant from the

If you think the journalism industry is shrinking, think again. Public radio and

incidents also unearth deep-seeded issues of systemic racism that dont usually

STUDENT EDUCATION
ENRICHMENT & DEVELOPMENT
(SEED)
Dear NABJ,
Welcome to Minneapolis, site of NABJs 40th Convention and
Career Fair.
Our industry has changed quite a bit in the past couple of years,
and NABJs Student Education Enrichment and Development (SEED)
program has made the appropriate adjustments along the way. Expect to
see
more of those changes this year as a team of professionals work together to
groom the next generation of media professionals.
The SEED program, which provides scholarships for deserving students who are pursuing a career in journalism
and other media-related fields, will once again attempt to help further these students goals of becoming
professionals. This has been a launching pad for an untold number of students, who are now extremely successful
professionals.
The Student Projects are the highlight of the year for SEED. It draws college students from all over the country
and gives them real-world journalism and communications experience. Additionally, many high schoolers love of
journalism is sparked through our related high
school program. Students produce newscasts, a newspaper, a website, engage social media and help manage
a communications office. They conduct interviews and write stories. They learn how to dissect documents, take
compelling photos, and shoot and edit videos. Expect them to do even more during NABJs election.
None of this could be achieved if it were not for our dedicated professional members who serve as mentors. Id
like to thank everyone who has helped SEED grow into one of, if not the best, short course for college students in
the country. A special thanks to the professionals who took the time to read and score our scholarship and intern
submissions. Thank you to those in the national office who help who work around the clock to ensure that SEED
achieves its mission of student training and development.

I would like to thank every media company and business in Minneapolis that has helped make the 2015 Student
Projects a success. The use of your newsroom, printing press, equipment, software, personnel and staff is
invaluable to SEEDs overall mission.
And to NABJs members, thank you for attending the convention. You are truly our greatest asset, today and
tomorrow, and we could not accomplish what we do without your support. Throughout this conference, I ask you to
stay engaged, proactive and continue to help SEED shape the future of the industry.
Sincerely,
Delano Massey

Scholarship Program
Internship Program
NABJ is dedicated to expanding job opportunities for black journalism students. NABJ annually awards summer
internships to students committed to journalism careers. Successful candidates are offered print, broadcast or
on-line positions at selected news organizations around the country ranging from small Black-owned weekly
newspapers to major market dailies and broadcast outlets.
STUDENT EDUCATION
SEED PROGRAM
NABJ offers print and broadcast short course to journalism students on the campuses of historically black colleges
or on college campuses with a large African-American student enrollment.
The short courses are taught by teams of professional journalists who provide students with information about
careers in the industry, training in writing, reporting and editing, and tips on job interviews and landing the first job
or internship.
The Sports Journalism Institute is a nine-week training and internship program for college students interested
in sports journalism careers. The institute is designed to attract talented students to print journalism through
opportunities in sports reporting and editing and to enhance racial and gender diversity in sports departments of
newspapers nationwide.
The NABJ Career Mentoring Program matches students and new professionals with dedicated members wanting to
ensure that the next generation of black journalists thrives in the newsroom. This yearlong process will help young
journalists understand the proper protocol and culture of the newsroom. It will also give them the chance to listen
to people who have already gone through what they will have to face and that can help guide them through the
proper channels for their professional expectations.
A new mentor program will be coming soon. In the meantime, student members are encouraged to access the
NABJ member database to reach out to professional members. You can search for members by area, company,
and job title. We encourage students to send introductory emails to members stating your name, school, and what
specific questions you have about career paths or the journalism industry.
Student Projects
The NABJ Student Multimedia Project offers a cross-platform training experience for full-time undergraduate
and graduate students who are interested in pursuing journalism or public relations as a career. Students work
as a team alongside experienced professionals who work for newspapers, television, radio and online news
organizations across the country.
