Where did July go?

What a busy month of
weather and events. Despite the high water, the
high winds and the rain,
the Club survived and all
the events took place
flawlessly! Lets hope
August sends us more
summer like weather!
The Jr Sailing Regatta
was a huge success with
114 sail boats and over
160 sailors and many
volunteers. The weather
was perfect for them and
the event ran very
smooth. Big thanks to
Dave Nighswander and
his team for doing an
awesome job. I personally spoke to many of the
kids and visiting club
parents and heard so
many complements
about our club and the
event.
From there all the participants went to PIB for
the JR Bay Regatta.
PCYC took third in the
Thistle class with the
team of JJ Miller, Will
Taylor and Ben

Sprenger. Be sure to
congratulate them if you
see them around the
Club! The Fleet Captain
of Sail will have much
more detail on both these
events.
The pool project continues to progress nicely
under the leadership of
PC John Bolte. The pool
construction company
Patterson Pools has been
selected and has begun
the drawings necessary
to submit to the state for
approval. Several members have stepped up to
participate in the final
design choices for the
slide and the water features that need decided
on. Besides the Planning
Committee, members
are; Bill Taylor Jr.,
Christy Sewell, Cory
Stine, Renee Stine, Gloria Denos and Martha
Snyder. We have met
once and more meeting
are in the works before a
final choice is made.
August is full of many
great events starting with

the Beach Party Pig

Roast on August 1st!
This year the party will
be held on the Wolfe
property beach and music provided by Island
Doctor! Should be a
great time! Every weekend has something leading right up to Labor
Day and the Green Island Race. Speaking of
Labor Day weekend, I
have heard there will be
a onetime event at the
pool. A couple members
are putting together a
Cannonball splash party
with prizes. There will
be something for all ages
so watch for more details
on this and plan to be
part of the grand finale
of the diving boards!
Thats all for now, see
you around the Club!

The Rear Perspective

This morning I write
this article from
McGregor Bay in the
pristine North Channel. I must keep it
short or there may
be a mutiny aboard
Family Tradition. After the major rain
and the preparations
for the big pool vote
in June, July has afforded us time enjoy
our boats, friends
and family around
the club. For PC
John Bolte, however,
finalizing the design
and details of the
pool project contract
is consuming all of
his free
time. Please thank
him for all his work
when you see him. If
it were not for members like PC John
and our resident
lawn mower, Gloria
Denos, our facility
would not be what it
is today.
A new fire pit is being installed near the
beach on the Wolf
property for use by
all members. Eric

will keep firewood

stacked there from
the driftwood and
other
sources. Please use
it and work together
to keep it clean. We
also will be installing
new lighting and a
new ceiling in the
kitchen soon. We
hope to continue the
kitchen updating
over time and to
keep costs down by
using volunteers
where possible. In
closing, on this beautiful morning up
north, I just want to
remind you to take a
moment and reflect
how thankful we are.
We are gifted with
many blessings, especially PCYC and
all the friends we
share as part of this
unique club.
See you soon,
Dave O.

Power Fleet News

The Power Fleet had a
successful lake crossing in
Mid-July as there were
eleven boats that made the
trip to Leamington. The
weather cooperated for
most of the weekend and
all boats made it back and
forth without incident. The highlight of the
trip was a group outing to
the Pelee Island Winery. All in attendance had
a great time and it continued into the evening.
Our next "Cruise-Out" is
to Middle Bass the weekend of August 14th. We
currently have twenty-four
boats signed up for the
weekend. We would welcome any newer members
to join us. These CruiseOuts are a great opportunity to meet fellow members. For those that have
signed up, you should
have received an itinerary
for the event. Lets hope
for great weather and fun
times.
Thank you,
RJ Basil,
FCOP

Sail Fleet News

Greetings to all PCYC Members. It has been a busy summer
so far. Our Jr. Sail Team has competed in a number of Regattas. Most recently our team competed in the Cleveland
Race Travelers Series at Edgewater Yacht Club on June 17
followed by North Cape Yacht Club on June 20. The North
Cape Regatta saw heavy winds and some great sailing. Next
was our North Coast Jr. Regatta run jointly by Port Clinton
Yacht Club and the Vermillion Boating Club. We had great
wind and some excellent sailing. Thanks to the great race
management by Dave Nighswander, PRO everything went
very smoothly. Our Race Team performed brilliantly with
the Sea Dog Thistle Team placing 2nd.

While all the parents contributed to a great week special

thanks goes out to Linda Sprenger who coordinated the event
and made sure that everything flowed smoothly.
As you may have noticed our Thistle Team received 2nd
Place. This is a great accomplishment and one that the team,
parents and PCYC can be proud of. This team was put together taking JJ Miller from a Laser and Ben Sprenger and
Will Taylor from a Club 420. Together they worked hard and
put on a great performance. In addition to 2nd Place at Jr. Bay
Week they are also 2nd in the I-LYA Travelers Series. JJ
and I purchased the boat late last fall and brought it back to
racing form.

Each year following the North Coast Jr. Regatta teams from
around I-LYA show up to compete after which they leave
their boats at PCYC until traveling to Put-In-Bay for Jr. Bay
Week. We had an outstanding turn out with over 114 boats
entered with over 160 competitors. In addition, thanks to the
efforts of our Opti Coach Amber Waite we had 7 Opti Competitors in the Green Fleet of 15 competitors. Way to go
Amber! Commodore Rodwancy was on hand to award trophies on a breezy afternoon. Thanks to our Trophy Chairman Ramon Eickert for an outstanding set of Trophies. Not
soon to be forgotten.

Port Clinton Yacht Club attended its first Jr. Bay Week in
1999. In 2000 PCYC entered its Thistle in a large fleet of
about 16 boats. They continued sailing the Thistle until 2008.
Some of our former Thistle sailors were Thomas McCritchie,
Jason Shiflet, Beth Longsdon, Aubrey Nighswander, Emma
Nadison, Tristan Nighswander, Maddie & Chloe Beck
and Katie Holtz to name a
few. Although PCYC continued attending Jr. Bay
Week in Lasers and Club
420s it was not until 2015
that PCYC returned to the
Thistle Class. I am very
proud to have returned our
Club to the Thistle scene and even prouder to know that
Commodore Rodwancy sailed a Thistle with his Dad some
years ago.

Our Sail Team traveled to Put-In-Bay early Sunday Morning

on July 19 to attend Jr. Bay Week. This is an annual event
where all the I-LYA Teams converge for a week of sailing.
Team members must be 13 years old and are housed together in a local hotel. There is minimum parental contact
with the kids going it alone. As always there are some new
team members who are the rookies. The week starts out
with an Ice Breaker where the teams put on skits to introduce themselves.
This year our team was made up of the following:
Thistle
Jayson Miller, Skipper
2nd Place
Will Taylor, Forward
Ben Sprenger, Middle
Laser
Michael Leone
14th Place
Lucas Kyle
27th Place
Club 420
Emma Eickert, Skipper 14th Place
Ethan Taylor, Forward
Alex Sprenger, Skipper 38th Place
Jasper Nickel, Forward
All of our Race Team attended Sailing Clinics in preparation
for the trip to Jr. bay Week. They worked hard to do well
and received a great deal of support from their parents. As
Sail Fleet Captain I was fortunate to be with our team and to
be on the Thistle Course with the I-LYA Designated Coach.

On a special note I had the pleasure of sailing with Ed Nickel

in the early 1970s. At that time Ed and I sailed a Lightning
and put together an Ice Boat we sailed out of his home on
Sand Road. It has been a personal goal of mine to get to
know Eds Son Steve who many of you know as a teacher at
Port Clinton High School. My further goal was to bring Eds
grandchildren Jasper and Jade Nickel into the PCYC Race
Team. I am proud to have had Jasper compete in this years
Jr. Bay Week in a Club 420 and to have had Jade compete in
the Opti Green Fleet at the North Coast Jr. Regatta. Ed
would be very proud as I know his grandmother Barb is!
Next up is the Green Island Race over Labor Day weekend.
The Green Island Race is September 6 with a special Commodores Reception on September 5 for all the past winners
of the Green Island Race. Dont miss it!
