Bernoulli'sPrinciple
Thisisanimportantprincipleinvolvingthemovementofafluidthroughapressuredifference.Supposea
fluidismovinginahorizontaldirectionandencountersapressuredifference.Thispressuredifference
willresultinanetforce,whichbyNewton's2ndlawwillcauseanaccelerationofthefluid.The
fundamentalrelation,

inthissituationcanbewrittenas

whichfurthermorecanbeexpressedas

Inotherwords,

whichisknownasBernoulli'sprinciple.Thisisverysimilartothestatementweencounteredbeforefor
afreelyfallingobject,wherethegravitationalpotentialenergyplusthekineticenergywasconstant(i.e.,
wasconserved).
Bernoulli'sprinciplethussaysthatarise(fall)inpressureinaflowingfluidmustalwaysbeaccompanied
byadecrease(increase)inthespeed,andconversely,ifanincrease(decrease)in,thespeedofthefluid
resultsinadecrease(increase)inthepressure.Thisisattheheartofanumberofeverydayphenomena.

Asaverytrivialexample,Bernouilli'sprincipleisresponsibleforthefactthatashowercurtaingets
``suckedinwards''whenthewaterisfirstturnedon.Whathappensisthattheincreasedwater/airvelocity
insidethecurtain(relativetothestillairontheotherside)causesapressuredrop.Thepressure
differencebetweentheoutsideandinsidecausesanetforceontheshowercurtainwhichsucksitinward.
Amoreusefulexampleisprovidedbythefunctioningofaperfumebottle:squeezingthebulboverthe
fluidcreatesalowpressureareaduetothehigherspeedoftheair,whichsubsequentlydrawsthefluid
up.Thisisillustratedinthefollowingfigure.

Bernouilli'sprinciplealsotellsuswhywindowstendtoexplode,ratherthanimplodeinhurricanes:the
veryhighspeedoftheairjustoutsidethewindowcausesthepressurejustoutsidetobemuchlessthan
thepressureinside,wheretheairisstill.Thedifferenceinforcepushesthewindowsoutward,andhence
explode.Ifyouknowthatahurricaneiscomingitisthereforebettertoopenasmanywindowsas
possible,toequalizethepressureinsideandout.
AnotherexampleofBernoulli'sprincipleatworkisintheliftofaircraftwingsandthemotionof``curve
balls''inbaseball.Inbothcasesthedesignissuchastocreateaspeeddifferentialoftheflowingairpast
theobjectonthetopandthebottomforaircraftwingsthiscomesfromthemovementoftheflaps,and
forthebaseballitisthepresenceofridges.Suchaspeeddifferentialleadstoapressuredifference
betweenthetopandbottomoftheobject,resultinginanetforcebeingexerted,eitherupwardsor
downwards.Thisisillustratedinthefollowingfigure.
