Luniversit de Cergy-Pontoise est un tablissement public reconnu pour la qualit de ses enseignements et sa recherche, qui accueille 17 000 tudiants, dont
10 % dtudiants trangers de 55 nationalits diffrentes. Idalement situe
lOuest de Paris (30 km de Paris-centre) dans le dpartement du Val-dOise,

agrable. En effet, avec 185 000 habitants dont 22 000 sont tudiants, CergyPontoise constitue une communaut de vie riche dun dynamisme culturel,

Cergy-Pontoise University is a public institution that is renowned for the quality

of its courses and research programs. The university welcomes 17 000 students
every year, 10 % of whom are foreign exchange students from 55 countries.
Ideally located west of Paris (30 km from the city centre) in the Val dOise department, the university is situated in a pleasant area in an attractive college town.
Indeed, 22 000 of the towns 185 000 inhabitants are students. This makes Cergy-Pontoise a community rich in cultural activities, sports and associations.

Founded in July 1991, Cergy-Pontoise University (UCP) is an interdisciplinary

university that offers a complete programme of studies from the Bachelors degree to the Doctorate in most fields of knowledge. In addition to traditional studies, the university has also set up professional training programs in cooperation
with the business world.

Cergy-Pontoise est situe 30 km de Paris, le plus simple est donc de prendre

un vol destination de Paris. Dans ce cas, vous arriverez soit laroport Roissy
Charles-de-Gaulle (le plus proche), soit laroport dOrly.
Cergy-Pontoise is situated 30 km outside Paris. The easiest way to travel to the

university is by plane. You can take a flight for Paris that lands at either RoissyCharles de Gaulle airport (which is the closest) or Orly airport.

There are several ways to reach Cergy-Pontoise:

Systme licence-master-doctorat (LMD)

Depuis septembre 2004, les formations de luniversit de Cergy-Pontoise
sorganisent autour de 3 niveaux : la licence, le master et le doctorat. Cette
organisation, dite LMD, a pour objectif dharmoniser les cursus de lenseignement suprieur europen et de faciliter ainsi la mobilit des tudiants et la

The Licence-Master-Doctorat LMD system

(Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate)
Since September 2004, courses of study at Cergy-Pontoise University have
been organised around three degrees: Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate.
This structure, which is called LMD in France, aims to harmonise programmes in higher education throughout Europe and thus make student exchanges and the recognition of diplomas easier.

Systme de notation, le systme ECTS

European Credit Transfer System
Dans le cadre de la rforme LMD, luniversit de Cergy-Pontoise a adopt le
systme ECTS qui facilite la reconnaissance des notes obtenues lors de votre
sjour dtudes ltranger.
Dans la maquette de chaque anne dtudes, les enseignements sont affects
de crdits ECTS. Pour russir un semestre, il vous faut accumuler 30 ECTS
luniversit de Cergy-Pontoise, ceux-ci seront ensuite valids dans votre
universit dorigine.
Pour les tudiants participant au programme dchange Erasmus, le contrat
dtudes ou Learning agreement comprend la liste des cours suivre en accord avec les tablissements dorigine et daccueil. Ils indiquent pour chaque
cours le nombre de crdits ECTS qui seront attribus ltudiant sil russit
ses examens.
Un relev de notes sera remis tous les tudiants aprs les examens. Il indique : vos rsultats, la liste des cours suivis, les crdits ECTS, les notes
lchelle locale et les notes daprs lchelle ECTS. Ce relev permettra votre
universit dorigine de mieux comprendre et reconnatre les notes obtenues
lors de votre sjour lUCP.

Guichet unique pour laccueil des tudiants en change
votre arrive, lquipe du service relations internationales et des tuteurs
tudiants franais vous accueilleront et vous aideront dans vos premiers pas
luniversit et Cergy-Pontoise : sinscrire, trouver un logement, remplir des
papiers administratifs, etc.
Pour faciliter vos dmarches administratives, luniversit a mis en place un
systme de guichet unique. Grce cela vous pourrez effectuer toutes les
formalits (inscription, titre de sjour, logement, etc.) auprs dun seul et
mme bureau.
Au dbut de chaque semestre, une journe daccueil est organise pour vous
faire visiter luniversit et lagglomration de Cergy-Pontoise. Cest loccasion
de rencontrer dautres tudiants internationaux, des tudiants franais qui,
comme vous, ont parfois pass une partie de leurs tudes ltranger, et vos
interlocuteurs luniversit : le personnel enseignant et administratif.
Pendant lanne, des sorties culturelles sont spcialement organises pour
les tudiants internationaux, par exemple, visites dans les muses locaux et
parisiens, sorties thtre, etc.
Marking system and ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)

Within the framework of the LMD system, Cergy-Pontoise University has
adopted the ECTS system which makes it easier to earn credits toward your
degree during your studies abroad.
In the chart for each year of studies you will see that each course corresponds
to a certain number of ECTS. You must earn a total of 30 ECTS each semester
at Cergy-Pontoise University. These credits will then be validated by your
university.
For students enrolled in the Erasmus program, the learning agreement provides the list of courses you should take that has been established between
the home and the host universities. For each course it indicates the number
of ECTS credits attributed to each student upon passing the exams.
Each student receives a transcript after the final exams. It includes: the students marks, the list of courses taken, the number of ECTS credits earned,
the marks according to the local system, and marks according to the ECTS
system. With this transcript your university can more easily understand and
recognise the marks you have obtained during your studies at Cergy-Pontoise University.
THE STRENGTHS OF CERGY-PONTOISE UNIVERSITY

A one-stop orientation service for international exchange students
When you arrive, the international relations team and French student tutors
will welcome you and help you discover Cergy-Pontoise University: enrolment, accommodation, administrative formalities, etc.
To make formalities easier, the university has set up a dedicated reception
and orientation office. Thanks to this system you can do all your paperwork
in one place (enrolment, visa, accommodation, etc.).
At the beginning of each semester, a special orientation day is organised so
that you can visit the university campus and the Cergy-Pontoise area. This
also gives you an opportunity to meet other international students, French
students who studied abroad, and the universitys faculty and administrative
staff.
Throughout the year special cultural outings are organised for international
students, such as trips to local and Parisian museums, plays, etc.
Geomoov, the international studentsassociation (Maison des tudiants - the

Gomoov, lassociation des tudiants internationaux (Maison des tudiants,

des voyages et des soires.
Pour permettre une meilleure intgration des tudiants en change durant

leur sjour, luniversit de Cergy-Pontoise a mis en place un dispositif de
cours de franais : le CILFAC (Cours International de Langue Franaise et
Action Culturelle).
Les cours offerts au CILFAC ont pour objectifs de permettre aux tudiants non
francophones de russir leur mobilit universitaire en France et, plus spcifiquement, de sadapter rapidement aux disciplines quils ont choisi dtudier
Cergy. Les supports utiliss en cours sont donc varis (iconographiques,
audio, vido, crits) de faon ce que chacun puisse sapproprier de manire

Cyberespace
Le cyberespace situ dans la Maison des tudiants (MDE) est exclusivement

Les utilisateurs peuvent bnficier de 12 postes fixes ou bien dune connexion
WIFI avec leur propre portable.
Pour les postes fixes le code utilisateur est mde.
Vous pouvez surfer sur le Web ou utiliser les outils bureautiques installs sur
les postes fixes.
Vous pouvez sauvegarder des dossiers le temps de votre connexion (dans mes
documents) et connecter une cl USB pour une sauvegarde personnelle.
Vous devez effacer vos fichiers (dans mes documents) avant de quitter et
de ranger votre poste de travail.

French classes at Cergy-Pontoise University

To help students make the most of their international experience, Cergy-Pontoise University has set up a system of French lessons called CILFAC (Cours
International de Langue Franaise et Action Culturelle).
The classes provided by CILFAC aim to enable non-French-speaking students
to succeed in their studies in France and quickly feel comfortable in the disciplines they have chosen to study at Cergy. The course materials are therefore
highly varied (images, audio, video, texts, etc.) to help familiarise each student with French language and culture in a practical and individualised way.

You can enrol upon arrival and start classes after a test to determine your
level of French.
For foreign students enrolled at Cergy within the framework of a university
exchange, the fees are:
25 per semester, Erasmus Program,

Internet Acces Point
The Internet access point located in the Maison des tudiants (student union)
is exclusively reserved for students and university staff.
Access is free from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday.
Users have access to 12 desktop computers and a WIFI connection for personal laptops.
For the desktop computers the user login is mde.
You can surf on the Web or use IT tools that are installed on the desktop
computers.
You can save files temporarily while you are connected (in My Documents)
or use a USB memory stick to save files for personal use later.
You must erase your files (in My Documents) before quitting and clear your
workstation before you leave.

After they have sent in their application and student forms, non-EU residents
will receive a letter of invitation from Cergy-Pontoise University which is necessary in order to apply for a student visa.
In order to benefit from health cover during their stay, European students
should obtain the European Health Insurance Card from their local social
security office before leaving * P. 37 .
Non-EU students and students covered by a private insurance plan in their
country must sign up for health cover when they enrol at the university

Visa applications
To study in France you must obtain a long-term student visa (D visa) before you travel. This is absolutely necessary in order to apply afterwards for a
student resident permit.
Students from Liechtenstein, Norway, Andorra, Monaco, Saint-Marin, and
the Vatican do not need to obtain a D visa.
Applications for student visas must be made at French consulates or embassies abroad at least 3 months in advance.

Ds votre arrive, diffrentes dmarches sont raliser pour obtenir votre titre de
sjour, pour votre inscription administrative, et votre inscription pdagogique.
Afin de vous aider, luniversit de Cergy-Pontoise a mis en place un guichet
unique qui vous permettra de raliser la plupart de ces dmarches dans un seul
bureau du service relations internationales (SRI).
As soon as you arrive you will need to take care of some of administrative formalities in order to enrol in the university, sign up for classes and obtain your
residents permit.
To make this easier, Cergy-Pontoise University has set up one-stop orientation

Titre de sjour
Les tudiants trangers dtenteurs dun visa de long sjour tudiant peuvent obtenir leur titre de sjour par lintermdiaire du SRI.

Student permit
Foreign students who have obtained a long-term Student visa can apply

Assurance sociale

Si ltudiant a plus de 28 ans, il pourra bnficier de la couverture maladie

votre inscription pdagogique. Cette inscription consiste choisir ses cours
et constituer son emploi du temps. Chaque cours doit faire lobjet dune

Health insurance
Students covered by a private health insurance plan in their country or students studying at Cergy-Pontoise within the framework of an exchange other
than Erasmus, must sign up for student health cover with Cergy-Pontoise
University. This insurance policy costs around 200 for the academic year

In the UK I study languages so I decided to come to France to improve my

French, although this year has brought so much more than that for me.
Everyone was friendly and extremely helpful when I arrived. I chose to follow
a course of history here at Cergy-Pontoise as it didnt matter to my university.
The Coordinator even set up a new agreement with Bristol University to allow
me to do this.
Living in university residence, the CILFAC course and the association of Geomoov all made it very easy to make friends with other international students
and French students who had an interest in people from abroad.
Not only have I really improved my French but I have had a fantastic time
doing so, learnt a lot about other cultures and met some truly amazing people.
I almost dont want to leave!

Luniversit de Cergy-Pontoise a pass une convention avec le Crous (Centre

Foreign exchange students can apply to the French government for financial

Cergy-Pontoise University dormitories

Cergy-Pontoise University has an agreement with the CROUS (Centre Rgional des uvres Universitaires) an organisation that runs university dormitories. This partnership enables the university to offer rooms to foreign
exchange students.
The International Relations Department can reserve rooms in these dormitories for students who apply before the deadline (three months before their
arrival) according to availability.
Dormitory rooms are allocated only to students who have applied and paid
the equivalent of one months rent for their reservation. If a student cancels
after September 1st, the reservation fee is not reimbursed * P. 19 .

Ever since I started learning French, it has been my dream to go to France so

that I could improve my French and learn about the culture. And I found out
that there is an exchange programme between my university and Cergy-Pontoise University.
When I arrived, I found it hard to adapt to a new environment, but the people
in the international office helped me very much, and I met a lot of people
thanks to the Geomoov Association, which organises parties, trips, etc.
The professors were very helpful too, making sure we understood the lessons.
I am really glad I spent a year here, and I would love to come back to France
to do a Master degree.

Theatre workshop
These courses are organised in cooperation with the Thtre en Stock company. Come enjoy three hours devoted to the joys of comedy, tragedy etc.The
theatre workshop brings together a group of 20 students from very different
horizons with the aim of creating a show for the end of the year.
The workshop takes place every Monday evening on the Saint-Martin campus
from 7:30 to 10:30 pm.
En partenariat avec la compagnie Thtre en Stock. Venez apprcier pendant

trois heures les joies de la comdie, de la tragdie, etc. Latelier thtre cest

En partenariat avec le Thtre 95. Cette option est ouverte tous les tudiants
de luniversit, quels que soient leur niveau dtudes et leur filire. Si vous vous
sentez lme dun acteur et dsirez dcouvrir lhistoire du thtre, participez
cette option qui se valide en langues, lettres et sciences humaines. Vous suivrez
des cours pratiques et thoriques et prparerez un spectacle de fin danne
dans des conditions professionnelles. Les cours ont lieu au Thtre 95 (CergyPontoise) le vendredi aprs-midi ou le samedi matin selon le niveau.

Theatre classes
These courses are organised in cooperation with the Thtre 95 Company.
They are open to all students whatever their course of study. If you want to
try your hand at acting or learn about the history of theatre, then these classes are for you. They can also earn you credits towards certain degrees. There
are practical and theoretical lessons that lead up to a professional show at the
end of the year. The classes take place at the Thtre 95 on Friday afternoon
and Saturday morning, depending on the students level.

Open University Lectures
Do you want to learn more about the burning issues of the day? The cultural
department invites you to come discover the Open University, an annual
series of lectures and debates. A true meeting of the minds, these lectures are
interactive and are centred on contemporary issues.
The lectures take place once a month on Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 pm
in the lecture hall on the Chnes 1 campus, ground floor. Admission is free
for university students.

Une journe Paris

Dbutez votre journe par un peu de sport en escaladant la Tour Eiffel ! Aprs avoir
admir la vue panoramique, enchanez avec une balade en bateau mouche. Vous
pourrez admirer les ponts et monuments de Paris, vus de leau Vous djeunerez ensuite place des Tertres et visiterez Montmartre, puis le muse du Louvre. Pour terminer
votre journe rendez-vous au thtre du Lucernaire pour assister une reprsentation thtrale. Aprs cette journe bien remplie, vous aurez mrit de finir votre sortie
avec une balade nocturne sur les Champs-lyses.
Bon savoir
La plupart des muses et des monuments nationaux sont gratuits pour les jeunes de moins de 26 ans appartenant lUnion europenne. Mais ils sont ferms
le mardi. Pensez-y !
Pour visiter Paris le week-end et les jours fris pensez au ticket Jeunes. Rserv
aux moins de 26 ans, ce ticket autorise un nombre illimit de voyages pendant
une journe pour environ 7 .
Pour revenir de vos nuits parisiennes pensez au Noctilien numro 150. Ce bus
part toutes les heures partir de 1 heure de la gare Saint-Lazare jusqu Cergyle-Haut pour environ 5 . www.noctilien.fr

A day in Paris
Start your day by climbing up the Eiffel tower! After taking in the panoramic view,
continue with a boat tour on the Seine. You can admire all the Paris monuments
from the riverThen have lunch at the Place des Tertres and visit Montmartre and
the Louvre. Top off your day with a play at the Lucernaire theatre. At the end of this
busy day, relax with an evening stroll down the Champs-Elyses.

Tip
Most monuments and museums are free on the first Sunday of every month. But
they are closed on Tuesdays. So plan ahead!
To visit Paris on the weekends and holidays, remember to purchase a Ticket Jeunes. This ticket entitles students under 26 to an unlimited number of rides per
day for around 7.
To come home after an evening in Paris you can take the Noctilien night bus
N 150. This bus leaves the Saint-Lazare train station every hour starting at 1 am
and will take you back to Cergy-le-Haut for around 5.
