Layuning malaki man o maliit,
basta ang mahalaga ito ay makakamit.

Classes of Poetry:
1. Lyric Poetry
-is a comparatively short, non-narrative poem in which a single speaker presents a state of mind
or an emotional state. Lyric poetry retains some of the elements of song which is said to be its
origin: For Greek writers the lyric was a song accompanied by the lyre.
Kinds:
1.1 An ode is a long lyric poem with a serious subject written in an elevated style. Famous
examples are Wordsworths Hymn to Duty or Keats Ode to a Grecian Urn.
Example:
Ode to Myself
I make the regulations,
I do the violations;
I have the right to commit crime,
I promise there won't be any sunshine;
Fools are those who follow equality,
There's no existence of sovereignty;
Making currency is the only motive,
I am the bear snatching honey from bee hive;
Don't compare myself with evils;
I am in myself the biggest devil;
Everything before me is an irrelevant issue,
Will sit in the top,just need some glue;
Citizens of India you have to remain under my feet,
You will be awarded harsh punishment,if you cheat;
Still confused to get my identification,
I came to Earth to give the criminals motivation;
Do ask me question,who am I?
I am the POLITICIAN of this nation.

1.2 Elegy is a formal lament for the death of a particular person (for example Tennysons In
Memoriam A.H.H.). More broadly defined, the term elegy is also used for solemn meditations,
often on questions of death, such as Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard.
1.3 The sonnet was originally a love poem which dealt with the lovers sufferings and hopes. It
originated in Italy and became popular in England in the Renaissance, when Thomas Wyatt and
the Earl of Surrey translated and imitated the sonnets written by Petrarch (Petrarchan sonnet).
1.4 A simple lyric embraces a wide variety of poems,with even a wider variety of subjects and
is characterized by subjectivity ,imagination ,melody and emotion.
2. Dramatic Poetry
-also known as dramatic verse or verse drama, is a written work that both tells a story and
connects the reader to an audience through emotions or behavior. A form of narrative closely
related to acting, it usually is performed physically and can be either spoken or sung. Normally,
it uses a set rhyming or meter pattern, setting it apart from prose. It has evolved since its start in
ancient Greece, but it still survives today, especially in opera librettos. A lack of strict guidelines
makes it somewhat debatable what exactly counts as a dramatic poem, but in general, the four
main accepted forms include soliloquy, dramatic monologue, character sketch and dialogue.

Kinds:
2.1 In a dramatic monologue a speaker, who is explicitly someone other than the author,
makes a speech to a silent auditor in a specific situation and at a critical moment. Without
intending to do so, the speaker reveals aspects of his temperament and character. In Browning's
My Last Duchess for instance, the Duke shows the picture of his last wife to the emissary from
his prospective new wife and reveals his excessive pride in his position and his jealous
temperament.
2.2 The masque was a form of festive courtly entertainment that flourished in 16th- and early
17th-century Europe, though it was developed earlier in Italy, in forms including the intermedio
(a public version of the masque was the pageant). A masque involved music and dancing,
singing and acting, within an elaborate stage design, in which the architectural framing and
costumes might be designed by a renowned architect, to present a deferential allegory flattering
to the patron.
3. Narrative Poetry
-gives a verbal representation, in verse, of a sequence of connected events, it propels characters
through a plot. It is always told by a narrator. Narrative poems might tell of a love story (like
Tennyson's Maud), the story of a father and son (like Wordsworth's Michael) or the deeds of a
hero or heroine (like Walter Scott's Lay of the Last Minstrel).
Kinds:
3. Epics usually operate on a large scale, both in length and topic, such as the founding of a
nation (Virgils Aeneid) or the beginning of world history (Milton's Paradise Lost), they tend
to use an elevated style of language and supernatural beings take part in the action.
3.2 A ballad is a song, originally transmitted orally, which tells a story. It is an important form
of folk poetry which was adapted for literary uses from the sixteenth century onwards. The
ballad stanza is usually a four-line stanza, alternating tetrameter and trimeter.
3.3 A metric tale is a tale (story, fable, etc.) that is written in meter, like poetry. Meter simply
means that the words flow in a rhythm (like da DA da DA da DA).
Kinds of Poetry:
1. Haiku
- is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines
of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme.
Own Composition:
Observation
Seek just to know
Why you know;
Drop other things

2. Cinquain
- is a five-line poem that was invented by Adelaide Crapsey. She was an American poet who
took her inspiration from Japanese haiku and tanka. A collection of poems, titled Verse, was

published in 1915 and included 28 cinquains.

Own Composition:
Spaghetti
Messy, spicy
Slurping, sliding, falling
Between my plate and mouth
Delicious

3. Dramatic Poetry
- is a drama written in verse, and it is either spoken or sung. Dramatic poetry appears in a
variety of forms. One type of dramatic poetry is an entire play written in verse, like Greek plays
by Sophocles and Euripides. Another type is a dramatic monologue, such as Robert Browning's
My Last Duchess. A dramatic monologue features a speaker who makes a speech to a silent
outsider, like the reader, and at some critical point, reveals something about himself or someone
else.
Own Composition:
Silent and Dark
I heard hands
clapping in the dark
left and right
across and beyond
Psyched masses
delightfully raising glasses
along with their voices
in a nonsense song
Waves were breaking
the silent shore
the wind was waking
shaken in its core
the ground was shaking
I could handle it no more
the view was flaking...
Screams and cries
and hands of strangers
reaching out
I felt cold
by the dying fire
I watched the Sun fade
the moment it arose

The Earth crumbled and split

it took them
the saints, the sinners
the men, the women
In the last breath the song
the nonsense song began to fade
and all we ever were
and all that ever was
was no more
but silent and dark.
4. Limerick
- is a form of poetry, especially one in five-line anapestic meter with a strict rhyme scheme
(AABBA), which is sometimes obscene with humorous intent. The first, second and fifth lines
are usually longer than the third and fourth.
Own Composition:
STAR
There once was a wonderful star
Who thought she would go very far
Until she fell down
And looked like a clown
She knew she would never go far.
5. Title Down
- is a very fun poem for kids. It has a topic idea running down the left side of the poem. Each
letter in the topic word has a new thought that runs off the side from left to right and is relevant
to the topic word. The topic word is typically the title as well.
Own Composition:
PAIN
Power can be obtained through
Anger or excite.
Invincibility is an example of eternal power and might.
Nothing is the power that sheds the darkened light.
