E206: ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE

EVANGELISTA, Renz Lexter C.

OBJECTIVE
The purpose of the experiment for the
Archimedes principle is to understand the
difference of the density of the unknown liquid
and the water using the concept of the loss of
weight method for the experiment. Also how the
loss of weight method will use in the reality.
The experiment was performed to have
knowledge on what will be the outcome in terms

of application of the lesson. And it will give some

information on what will occurs in real life. After
the experiment, the loss of weight method will
discover that every other liquids has different
density or the buoyant force. The experiment will
use a mass weight and getting the mass in the
air, water, and in the unknown fluid. The
mathematical formula that Archimedes will use
for the gathering the data.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Every experiment is need the materials to apply
in its method. It is divided to four parts to obtain
the experiment to determine the specific gravity
of the unknown solid samples and unknown
liquids.
For the materials, the group used the platform
balance/weighing balance to get the needed
weight of the unknown solids and liquids,
hydrometer for the table c to get the specific
gravity of the sample liquids. Weights, 2pcs of
250-ml Brand graduated cylinder, 3pcs of 250ml
Brand beaker, 1pcs of cork, string and 2 pcs of
metal specimen.
For the table a, determining the specific gravity
of an unknown solid sample, the group hanged
the metal sample in weighing balance to
determine the weight in air, next was the group
submerge the metal sample in the beaker that fill
with water then measure the weight. The group
subtract the weight in the air to the weight in the
water to determine the loss of weight of water.
Then the group repeated the procedure for the
2nd metal sample then compared the actual
values in the experimental value and the group

subtracting the weight in air to weight in liquid. It

is repeated in the other liquid sample. The group
compared the experimental values to the actual
values found in the table a. the group identify
that the unknown sample was water and alcohol.
For table c, determining the specific gravity of an
unknown liquid sample using the hydrometer was
simply putting the hydrometer in the two
samples liquid then the group get the specific
gravity of the two. Then the group determined its
kind.
And lastly, for the table d, determining the
specific gravity of a solid lighter than water, the
metal sample was tied with the cork. The metal
sample will be the sinker of the cork in the
sample liquid. The group suspended the cork
from the string and hang the sinker with it. The
metal sunk to the sample liquid to determine the

Figure 2 the actual procedure for the determining the

specific gravit of the cork.

determined that the two metal sample was

aluminum and brass.
For the table b, determining the specific gravity
of an unknown liquid sample, the group choose
the aluminum for the weight in air. Then the
metal submerge completely in the first sample
liquid to get the weight in liquid. After that the
group get the loss of weight of body in liquid by

weight of metal in water then the metal with cork

sunk to determine the weight of metal with cork
in water, then the group subtracted the two to
get the loss of weight of cork. Lastly, the
determining the specific gravity of the cork using
the given formula.
OBSERVATIONS AND RESULTS
After conducting the experiment, the group
observed that the two sample liquid has different
density and specific gravity. In determining the
specific gravity of the sample solids heavier than
water, the group obtained the value needed for
the table.

correct problems and improve the experiment.

When analyzing sources of uncertainty and/or
error, be specific and avoid using vague phrases
such as "human error."

DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION

This section summarizes the results of your
experiment and comments on the success of the
experiment by comparing results to accepted
values.
It
identifies
problems
with
the
experimental methodology or apparatus. It will
also provide suggestions to improve the
experiment and/or extrapolates ideas for future
experiments that would build upon the present
work.
Present the conclusions you draw from the
results. Be sure that your conclusion reflects the
purpose of the experiment, as stated in your
Objective section. All conclusions should be
clearly stated and supported with evidence. Cite
specific results and observations from the
experiment and tie them to your conclusions.
You should indicate whether your measurements
and/or calculated values make sense. Do they fall
within the expected range? In case the data or
results appear to be outside a reasonable range,
point out what possible problems might have
occurred. When appropriate, recommend ways to

ACKNOWLEDGMENT & REFERENCE

I would like to thanks my mom and dad because
they gave me food around 4 am when Im doing
this lab report, also in my dog, keeper who
waiting me to finish before he go to sleep. Also in
the jeepney driver who drove so fast and because
of that Im not late in my class. Especially to my
friend who always laughing in my grammar. And
lastly in god who gave me faith to get a high
grades in this lab report. I would like to thank
god for giving me a physique personality not only
in physical but also in mental. To those author
that I paraphrase their journal about this
laboratory, in my cousin who teach me how to
make a pretty laboratory report and to myself
that giving determination to finish this. This
laboratory report would not have been possible
without the help of my friends.
