Whatyouarephotographingdetermineswhetherornottheobjectinvolvedshouldbegrounded.
Wheneveryouphotographalivingsubject(person,animalorpet)undernocircumstancesshouldthatsubjectbe
groundedorbeallowedtotouchagroundduringexposure.Beingincontactwithagroundwillleadtoanastyshock.
Further,anyonewithaheartconditionorpacemakershouldconsultwiththeirprimarycarephysicianbefore
photographingorallowingthemselvestobephotographedusingthisKirliandevice.
Whenphotographinganinanimateobjectsuchasacoin,keys,leaf,etc.thenconnectagroundtotheobject.Groundingtheobject
producesastrongercoronadischarge.Youcanuseanaturalgroundbyconnectingawiretoanearthground,suchasacoldwater
pipe.OryoucanuseacircuitgroundbyconnectingawiretopointB(seeFigure2)totheobject.

theobjecttomaketheobjectlayflatonthefilmanddischargeplate.
Whetheryou'reworkingwithblackandwhiteorcolorfilm,placethefilmemulsionsideuponthedischargeplate.Placetheobject
youarephotographingontopofthefilm.Iftheobjectisinanimate,connectagroundwiretoit.FlicktheswitchSW1about1020
times.Eachtimetheswitchisflickedyoushouldseeadischargebetweentheobjectandthedischargeplate.Thisiswhatisbeing
recordedonthefilm.Properexposureisdeterminedbytrialanderror,makingadjustmentsaccordingly.
OftentimesoneusesB/Wsheetfilmtodeterminetheproperexposurethenswitchtoacolorsheetfilmforthefinalshoot.Black
andWhiteorthohastheadvantagesofbeingabletoworkusingaredsafelightandeasilydeveloped.
Ifyouwouldliketouseastandard35mmcameraorvideocameratorecordKirlianpicturesitispossible,butyouneedto
constructatransparentelectrode.
The35mmcamerashouldbeasinglelensreflex(SLR)typewithoneortwocloseup(macro)lens.Inadditionthecameraneedsto
haveaBulb(B)settingonitsshutterspeeds.TheBsettingkeepstheshutteropenforaslongastheshutterishelddown.
PhotographerstypicallyuseacablereleaseconnectedtotheshuttertomakeBexposures.Mostcablereleasescanbesettokeep
theshutterclosewhenfirstpressed.Thecablehasareleasemechanismthephotographerhitstoreleasethecableandallowthe
shuttertocloseaftertheexposureismade.
