Course Learning Outcome:


This course evaluates learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, and 4. At the end of the course,
students should be able to :
1. Identify literary elements and devices in short stories, novels and poetry. (1.1, 6.1)
2. Discuss the effectiveness of literary elements in short stories, novels and poetry.
(6.1, 6.3, 6.4)
3. Analyse the use of literary devices in literary texts. (6.1, 6.3)
4. Express personal responses to literary texts through reader response activities.
(6.1, 6.3)
5. Apply critical appreciation skills by responding to literary texts, in oral and written
form. (5.2, 6.1, 6.3)

Assignment Objectives:
To enable students to :
identify and demonstrate an understanding of the literary elements and devices from
the selected text
write an analysis of the short story studied in the course
write personal responses to literary texts through reader response activities
conduct an oral presentation focusing on the issues and themes in the novel
analyse the literary forms and devices in a text

III. TASK 1 : SHORT STORY (30%) - Individual


1. Select any ONE short story that you have explored in class that appeals to you.
Write an essay of 1000 words to analyse the story based on the on the following : Themes
Characters
Plot
Literary devices
Essay Guidelines :
Introduction
Content
Closure

: give a brief description of the story and the highlights of the essay
: the analysis of the story (themes,characters,plot,literary devices)
: write a conclusion, summarising all points and may include personal
opinions

IV. TASK 2 : SCRAPBOOK PRODUCTION (30%) - Pair work


Prepare a scrapbook based on Amy Tans The Joyluck Club
The scrapbook should have the following :
A creative cover page that includes the title of the novel, the authors name and
your name
Table of content
Biodata of the author
Major themes from the novel
An analysis of the characters, literary elements, literary devices
Neat and creative, as well as attractive layout
Guidelines for Scrapbook :
The scrapbook should consist the following:
Table of content
Introduction
: Biodata of the author and a brief summary of the book
Content
: Analyse the following; major themes, characters, literary elements
and literary devices (500 words essay)
Closure
: Write a conclusion about the whole idea of the novel based on the
selected themes

V.

TASK 2 : ORAL PRESENTATION (40%) Individual


Discuss the issues highlighted in the novel ; The Joyluck Club by Amy Tan
THE TASK :
Prepare a powerpoint presentation focusing on issues highlighted in the
novel
You have 10 minutes to present your views.
Justify your choice of issues and show how it is reflected in the novel.
Write a 500 words of reader response based on the issues highlighted in the oral
presentation
Submit the hardcopy as well as the soft copy of your work (the powepoint and essay)
You will be assessed based on the effectiveness of your delivery and the accuracy of

your facts (both oral and written)


Guidelines for the Oral Presentation :
The oral presentation task should follow the format as follows:
Prepare the powerpoint in Microsoft Windows 97-2000 or Windows 7 format
Presentation slides should not exceed more than 10 slides and any font size
should not be less than 20
The focus is on issues in the novel and should not exceed more than 10 minutes
Justify issues by providing examples from the text
Guidelines for the reader response essay

GUIDELINES FOR PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
