one hand and radicals on the other. I would probably do extreme injustice to use these categories in
relation to a person who has avoided and defied labels.
But I cannot but think of Subrahmanyam as a reformer, as the one who ushers in quiet change, often
slow and painstaking. It is the kind of change whose tangible signs the reformer does not aim to see
during his lifetime, but leaves its indelible mark for posterity.

Unforgettable and magical dance show
Ingrid Lakshmi Raveendran
The Music Academy was full, the lights were out and the excitement of the audience before Alarmel
Valli's performance, palpable. The strains of the tambura filled the air, the musicians began to play,
Murali Parthasarathy started singing Nagendra Haraya from Adi Shankara, and Valli appeared like a
goddess, dancing, invoking and describing the Lord, His manifestations, and suddenly the divine form
appeared. Her unsurpassable grace accompanied by visual poetry was exquisite.
The rupaka tala varnam in ragam Karnataka Kapi, a varnam of the Tanjore Quartet Ponniah Pillai,
portrayed in detail, the heroine's plea to her beloved, Shiva. Through her poetical imagination, Valli
invoked the presence of the Lord in all His different manifestations. Blossoming flowers, the breeze
caressing leaves - these were visualized in her movements.
The pure dance segment was notable for its rhythmic intricacies and structural grace. Perfect footwork,
beautiful adavus, crystal clear jatis, flowing hand gestures matched perfectly with the music and the
nattuvangam and solkattus of C K Vasudevan. It is unusual for even senior dancers to present a
traditional varnam these days as there is a general fear that this may not be politically correct. But Valli
did it perfectly.
The stories of the heroines in Yarukkagilum Bhayama in tala Misrachappu, ragam Begada and
Apadooruku, Adi tala and raga Kamas were depicted with evocative and rich poetic images.
The concluding piece Nrittalahari, composed by Prema Ramamurthi and Latha Ramchand in a
ragamalikai andAdi tala was a real explosion of intricate rhythms, well placed head and eye
movements, beautiful silences, ample, elaborated and graceful body movements.
Valli, after performing for more than four decades, remains an idol of Bharatanatyam today. She
captures the viewer's imagination and takes her to a higher level of consciousness. Her exploration in
visual poetry, her inner sense of music and rhythm conquers the heart of the audience and explains
her continued popularity.
Alarmel Valli's accompanying musicians Murali Parthasarathy as vocal support, Sakthivel
Muruganandhan on the mridangam, Ranjani Ramakrishna on the biolin, Sruthi Sagar on the flute and
C. K Vasudevan on the nattuvangam made this performance magical and unforgettable.
