LITERARY CLUB

The new Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS) introduced by the University
of Kerala gives ample importance to the extra-curricular activities for nurturing the personality of
the students. The Literary Club is one of the many clubs initiated by the University as a part of
this agenda.The Literary Club in Govt. College for Women functions to attain these objectives :

PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES


The Literary Club conducted its first meeting on 03-08-2011, Wednesday. Subsequent
meetings were conducted on Fridays from 12.30 to 2.00 pm during the third semester. From the
fourth semester onwards, the Club expanded its activities and meetings were conducted on
Mondays and Wednesdays also from 1.00 to 1.30 pm. If for any reason, a meeting could not be
conducted on these days, it was postponed to the very next day. Hence, within a time span of
about 60 hours, the Literary Club conducted a variety of programmes and activities.

1. Poetry Presentation (Pen down the poem)


The students recited poems mostly their own, in various languages. The meaning that a
poem conveyed was expanded.
Opinions were sought for improvement and necessary
corrections were made by the students with the help of the teachers.
2. Short story presentation (Say the story)
Imaginative and touchy stories unveiled themselves during this session. The audience opined
on the subject matter and language. Stories were based on a variety of subjects from the ones
with a personal touch to the ones that centred on contemporary issues.
3. Article Presentation (Art in the Article)
Students either presented their own articlesor took up a newspaper or magazine article for
explanation and discussion. This was one of the most informative sessions. The members were
enthusiastic to present articles in English, Malayalam and hindi.
Almost every Club meeting had poetry, story and article presentation, thus giving the
students ample opportunity to display their talent andimprove the quality of its application.
4. Criticism and Appreciation (Disect and Applaud)
Literary works poems, stories and essays of various languages were reviewed. The
members appreciated the beauty of some literary works with an artistic mind and criticised some
with depth and precision. These sessions were astonishing demonstrations of objective and
subjective approaches toliterature.
5. Know the Writer
In this session, members introduced poets and prose writers of various languages. Both the
personal life and professional merit of writer were discussed. In some instances, a picture of the
writer was also passed around. These sessions have encouraged students to know more about
the literary mastroes and follow up on their works.
6. Know the Book
In this session a famous work in a language was taken up and its outline was given to the
students. Its literary merit and importance were discussed. The objective was to cultivate the
interest of students in reading these works. Reviews about the newest of the new books were
also presented to get the students acquainted with contemporary literature.
7. Know the Language
This was an interesting and productive session that helped students to work on their language
and cross many language barriers. Words, phrases, grammatical structures and common usages
of English, Malayalam and Hindi were presented by the members. Later, the introduction of
Sanskrit words to this category, opened new realms of knowledge for the students.

8. Riddles and Puzzles

The riddles and puzzles of various languages did magic in cultivating love for the language in
the students. Sometimes competitions were conducted based on these and the game mood did
wonders to improve the thought process and language of the students.
9. Discussion and Debate
Relevant topics were taken up for this session. Group discussions helped the students bond
with each other share their ideas and voice out their opinions. The group leaders changed in
every session, thus cultivating leadership qualities and team spirit in them. Topics based on
women empowerment and tongue-tied teenagers stormed the debate sessions where
opposing ideas clashed in the arena, presenting a productive war with words and vision.

Interactive Session

The interactive session with the famous contemporary Malayalam poet Sri.GireeshPuliyoor
held on 12-08-2011, Friday was an unforgettable and enriching experience for the Clubmembers.
His views on poetry and his eloquent and sincere expression of its present statetriggered new
thoughts in the students for the improvement of the same. He recited a poem of his with such
clarity and lyrical quality, that it was also a demonstration of a new scope in recitation. The
students participated actively in this session and posed their questions and remarks.

Bulletin board

A bulletin board was placed in the college campus by the literary club since the club consisted
of students from English, Malayalam and Hindi departments, students of each department in
updating and maintaining the bulletin board, every week. This activity prompted the students to
write something on their own, more than before. The articles,news,
pictures and puzzles on the bulletin board received appreciation and positive response from
many students and teachers of the college

Magazine (KATHIR THE ABODE OF ART)

The Literary Club prepared a magazine KATHIR- THE ABODE OF ART, under the editorship of
Arya V.J. (English) and AparnaSasikumar (Malayalam), that contained the contributions of all its
members, divided into three sections English, Malayalam and Hindi. The magazine brought out
the diverse and versatile literary talents of the members through stories, poems, riddles, articles,
pictures etc.
INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE
Best Performer
Arya V.J. (Dept. of English)was selected as the best performer of the Literary Club. She is
the co-editor of the Club Magazine and is in-charge of the bulletin board. She co-ordinates the
club meetings and sees to it that the programmes are conducted as scheduled.
Active participants
Anju Jose (English dept.) and AparnaSasikumar (Malayalam dept.) contributed immensely
to the bulletin board, magazine and helped in the smooth functioning of all club activities.

AparnaSasikumar is also the co-editor of the magazine and helped in the co-ordination of the
club meetings.
Geethusidhan, Kavya M.V. and Chinchu B.U. (Malayalam dept.) made significant
contributions to the up dation and maintenance of the bulletin board and participated actively in
other club activities. Other members such as Anu M., GayatriAjayan (English dept.) and
AchuAyyappan (Malayalam dept.) were also immensely co-operative.
ANALYSIS
Literary Club gave its members a suitable platform to hone their literary talents with
productive suggestions, healthy criticism and heartfelt appreciation. It introduced them to the
wider horizons of literature in diverse languages. The Club gave them a sense of belonging in a
group where their individuality and talents were respected and instilled in them a sense of
confidence to speak out. Thus, Literary Club triggered conducive thoughts in its members,
encouraged them to give it expression and inspired them to the course of progressive action.
The Club Magazine KATHIR-THE ABODE OF ART was the epitome of the inspiration of the
students gained for their creative talent from the Club.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES OF THE CLUB MEMBERS
The Club has encouraged different students to take part in various competitions according to
their talent and aptitude. The following students represented the college in various competitions
:
Arya V.J. (English dept.) secured Ist prize in Hindi elocution in the Kerala University Youth
Festival in 2012.
AparnaSasikumar (Malayalam dept.) participated for Malayalam Short story writing in the
Kerala University Youth Festival in 2012.
GeethuSidhan G. and Kavya M.V. (Malayalam dept.) also secured prizes in the College Arts
Fest in 2012.
Some of the members of the Club have also done programmes in the All India Radio.
