100 Book Bags/Backpacks

Federal definition of student homelessness: Children
and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate
nighttime residence.
Due to the love and generosity of our congregation, the
Missions Ministry of Francis Burns United Methodist
Church has adopted a permanent and year-round
commitment to support homeless students of
both Richland School Districts One and Two.
The Missions Ministry would like to express our sincere
appreciation for the support given to us by our Francis
Burns Church Family. Because you have been diligent in
your support of Fifth Sunday Offerings, Missions
ministry feels both thankful and blessed.
Please keep these children and families in prayer and in
mind as you enjoy your summer vacation and Tax-Free
Weekend.
We are in the process of purchasing
school supplies. However, this year,
we need to provide more book-bags/
backpacks for the students. In
addition to storing school supplies,
book bags provide a more secure
and portable place for them to store
their "personal stuff".
Please consider donating a new, unused book bag to
this effort. Please select gender-neutral colors and
designs as well as age-appropriate bagselementary,
middle, and high school. We would like to provide at
least 100 book bags.
You may drop your Book bags/Backpacks donation off
at the Church. If you would like to make a monetary
donation, please make checks payable to Francis Burns
Mission Ministry and include in the memo section: Book
bags/Backpacks.
You may contact Adrinne Gee or Jacqueline Williams for
additional information. Thanks in advance for your
gifts, support, and prayers!
If anyone knows of great deals on book bags for older
students, please let us know. Again thank you for
sharing your blessings with those less fortunate and for
being there whenever Missions Ministry appeals to you
for help.

WHAT YOU HAVE IS ENOUGH FOR GOD

Status And Role Of Women
By Teresa Holland

The Status and Role of Women was proud to host

its first Girl Talk series on March 29, 2015 at 5pm. We
were blessed to have in attendance 13 ladies of all age
ranges. The session was facilitated by Dr. Evelyn
Fulmore. The scriptural focus came from 2Kings:4:2.
When the widow asked Elisha for help, she
halfheartedly offered her jar of oil thinking it not of
much value. This is how we see ourselves and our
gifts at times so we halfheartedly use them thinking
them not of much value. Dr. Fulmore spoke openly
and challenged each woman and girl on this thinking.
The attendees spoke freely and openly as we began to
form a covenant of love and support. Refreshments
were served.
The session scheduled for May 31, 2015 was
postponed due to the untimely hospitalization of Dr.
Fulmore. We are praising God that Dr. Fulmore is
doing better. The next session will be August 30, 2015
at 5:00pm in the fellowship hall as we continue our
theme, What You Have Is Enough for God as it relates
to relationships. Women and girls of all ages are
invited to attend.
Our status and role in the world and our nation
is to be living testimonies of Christs love and
compassion.

There are many exciting ministries

and programs in the life of Francis
Burns United Methodist Church.
During the months of summer and
throughout
the
year,
these
ministries are involving many of the
youth and children in FBUMC and
the community as a whole. The
Bible tells us:
Train up a child in the way he/she should go and
when he/she is old he/she will not turn from it.
Proverbs 22:6
The church has the job/responsibility of teaching and
showing our children the way that leads them to a right
relationship with the Lord. Here are just a few of the
ministries and program we have at Francis Burns.
First, the summer feeding program is a ministry that
touches the lives of children, youth, young adults and
families for the past seven years. The ministry works
with the Department OF Education and the USDA. The
program allows youth and young adults from the church
employment opportunities and to gain work experience
during the summer months. Many of the youth are
working to college degrees or preparing to attend
college. There are adult staff members from Francis
Burns that work faithfully to supervise and keep this
ministry going in the life of Francis Burns.
Second, The Childrens Defense Fund Freedom School is
a six week program that is completing its second year
at Francis Burns. This program involves its scholars in
a positive setting that increases reading skills and
teaches the scholars about activism and how they can
make a difference in the community and the world.
During the six weeks many guest readers popped in
during Harambee and read to the scholars. The scholars
were given the opportunity to ask for insights of the
guest reader.
Third, Francis Burns United Methodist Church has a very
active scouting ministry. We have scouting for the boys
and girls of Francis Burns as well as children from the
community. As the Pastor, I have participated in the
ministry on many levels. I have been honored to teach
God and Country to our scouts, upon completion the
scouts will earn pins and certificates. I give thanks to
God for the adult leaders, parents, grandparents and all
who assist in the success of this ministry.
Fourth, The Salkehatchie Summer Work Program is a
ministry of the South Carolina Annual Conference of the
UMC. For years Francis Burns has been sending our
youth as well as adult leaders to work for one week.
(Saturday to Saturday) rehabbing homes for families
that are unable or do not have the resources to make
needed repairs to their homes. What joy to see the
youth from this place, FBUMC, giving of their time,
talent and resources working in the vineyard for the
improvements of others lives.
See Pastor page 3

Page 5

Burns Connection
During July 11-18, thirteen 4:12
youth had the ultimate pleasure
of
going
to
Salkhatchie.
Salkehatchie is a mission program
where youth improve the living
conditions for South Carolina
residents. I did not go last year
and forgot what it was like, so I
was really reluctant to go. Now having survived a week
in Bamberg, I can honestly say that for the most part I
had a great time. What was really
funny was that before we left, I was
joking around with Ms. Ashleigh and
said that if we were on the same site
we would make a great partnership.
She did not expect us to actually be
on the same site, but it turned out
that she had the ultimate pleasure of
spending all seven days with me all
day long!
At Salkehatchie, I learned how to
repair a roof, fix holes in the wall,
and even breakdance.
So, if you
ever need help with any of those
things, I am the perfect person to ask
for help!
The great thing about
Salkhatchie is that you do not need a
lot of skills in construction to make a
difference. You do not have to even know how to paint
at the beginning of week, and you will be surprised by
how much you learn by the end.

homeowners ever will. My homeowner, Mrs. Jones, was

AMAZING! She tried to help out in ANY way she could.
I remember one day we left for lunch and the kitchen
was still intact because we had not started working on
it yet. When we came back from lunch, the stove and
the refrigerator were moved. We all looked around
asking "who moved these things," and Ms. Jones came
around the corner saying oh I did.
My mouth
dropped because it was remarkable for her to move
those things by herself given her age.
Before we left for Salkhatchie, the
youth learned that we would be
providing the music for the worship
service on Tuesday night. To me, it
kind of made up for the fact that we
would not be singing on the second
Sunday in July. What made singing on
Tuesday night even more special was
that some of the Francis Burns
members drove down to support us.
That really put a smile on my face and
we would like to thank everyone who
attended. I also want to thank the
Missions ministry for sponsoring the
Salkehatchie dinner when we hosted
the Columbia Salkehatchie camp for
worship service on July 19th. They
really enjoyed the meal and I think
that was the perfect way to end our week long of
mission work. I can honestly say that I had a great
time at Salkhatchie and I cannot wait until next year!

In the book of Acts chapter 20 verse 35 it states

that In everything I did, I showed you that by
this kind of hard work we must help the weak
remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself
said: It s more blessed to give than to receive.
Many of the homeowners at Salkhatchie lost all
hope at ever getting back into a good place.
Within a week, it is our job to show them that
even when you think you
are at your lowest point
and things seem the
worst, that you must not
quit.
Each Salkehatchie camper
gives a week of our
summer and even pays
money to help people that
we do not know, but I
promise you that we get
more out of this than the

10 Tips to Beat the Summer Heat

This summer we have had record heat. So here are
some simple tips that will keep you cool as a
cucumber. 1)Schedule your physically strenuous
activities for cooler times. And yes, that includes
walking around the theme parks. 2)Dress in light,
loose, cotton clothing. Natural fabrics like cotton are
much cooler than most synthetics (though there are
new high-tech synthetics made specifically to keep
you cool). Protective hats (Wide-brimmed) keep the
sun out of your eyes and provide some cooling shade.
Loose fitting clothes allow air to circulate, keeping you
cooler. The fewer clothes, the better, but make sure
to be appropriate to the circumstances. 3)Use
sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (the most effective
products say "broad spectrum" or "UVA/UVB
protection" on their labels). You can get painful
sunburn even on a cloudy day, so slather on the
sunscreen every morning before you start out. Don't
forget lips, ears, back of neck. 4)When working
outside, take periodic rest breaks in a cool area. So
relax, slow down, pace yourself.
5)Drink, drink, drink .Water and Non-Alcoholic
drinks!! DON'T wait until you feel thirsty -STAY
HYDRATED. In hot weather, as much as 3-4 quarts
per day are recommended while exercising. Avoid
opening the refrigerator or freezer. Food should be
safe as long as the outage lasts NO MORE than 4-6
hours. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which are diuretics - substances that increase water loss via the urine. 6)
Never leave children or pets inside a car, even if the
windows are open. 7)If you are taking medication, ask
your doctor about its side-effects. Be extra cautious in
the heat if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or
other medical conditions. For instance, certain
medications (like some antibiotics, NSAIDS [such as
ibuprofen and aspirin], and some oral contraceptives),
may make you sunburn more easily, so be sure to
protect yourself and stay out of the sun as much as
possible.
8)Keep cool with fans, air conditioning, and cool baths
or showers. Make your own air conditioner by placing
a bowl of ice in front of a fan and letting it blow on
you. Window fans work best when blowing air out, so
put your fan on the sunny side of the house or
apartment and let it expel the hot air while pulling
cool air from open windows on the shady side. Keep
shades or curtains pulled on the sunny side of the
house.
9)Get plenty of sleep and eat light, nutritious, and non

-fatty meals. Eat foods high in water content, like fruits

& vegetables 10)Be aware that when active in a hot, dry
climate -- for example when playing outdoor sports or
games--both salt and water are lost in sweat. Under
such conditions restriction of dietary salt by healthy
individuals may be unwise. (Article taken from

During July 11-18, thirteen 4:12
youth had the ultimate pleasure
of
going
to
Salkhatchie.
Salkehatchie is a mission program
where youth improve the living
conditions for South Carolina
residents. I did not go last year
and forgot what it was like, so I
was really reluctant to go. Now having survived a week
in Bamberg, I can honestly say that for the most part I
had a great time. What was really
funny was that before we left, I was
joking around with Ms. Ashleigh and
said that if we were on the same site
we would make a great partnership.
She did not expect us to actually be
on the same site, but it turned out
that she had the ultimate pleasure of
spending all seven days with me all
day long!
At Salkehatchie, I learned how to
repair a roof, fix holes in the wall,
and even breakdance.
So, if you
ever need help with any of those
things, I am the perfect person to ask
for help!
The great thing about
Salkhatchie is that you do not need a
lot of skills in construction to make a
difference. You do not have to even know how to paint
at the beginning of week, and you will be surprised by
how much you learn by the end.

homeowners ever will. My homeowner, Mrs. Jones, was

AMAZING! She tried to help out in ANY way she could.
I remember one day we left for lunch and the kitchen
was still intact because we had not started working on
it yet. When we came back from lunch, the stove and
the refrigerator were moved. We all looked around
asking "who moved these things," and Ms. Jones came
around the corner saying oh I did.
My mouth
dropped because it was remarkable for her to move
those things by herself given her age.
Before we left for Salkhatchie, the
youth learned that we would be
providing the music for the worship
service on Tuesday night. To me, it
kind of made up for the fact that we
would not be singing on the second
Sunday in July. What made singing on
Tuesday night even more special was
that some of the Francis Burns
members drove down to support us.
That really put a smile on my face and
we would like to thank everyone who
attended. I also want to thank the
Missions ministry for sponsoring the
Salkehatchie dinner when we hosted
the Columbia Salkehatchie camp for
worship service on July 19th. They
really enjoyed the meal and I think
that was the perfect way to end our week long of
mission work. I can honestly say that I had a great
time at Salkhatchie and I cannot wait until next year!

In the book of Acts chapter 20 verse 35 it states

that In everything I did, I showed you that by
this kind of hard work we must help the weak
remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself
said: It s more blessed to give than to receive.
Many of the homeowners at Salkhatchie lost all
hope at ever getting back into a good place.
Within a week, it is our job to show them that
even when you think you
are at your lowest point
and things seem the
worst, that you must not
quit.
Each Salkehatchie camper
gives a week of our
summer and even pays
money to help people that
we do not know, but I
promise you that we get
more out of this than the

100 Book Bags/Backpacks

Federal definition of student homelessness: Children
and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate
nighttime residence.
Due to the love and generosity of our congregation, the
Missions Ministry of Francis Burns United Methodist
Church has adopted a permanent and year-round
commitment to support homeless students of
both Richland School Districts One and Two.
The Missions Ministry would like to express our sincere
appreciation for the support given to us by our Francis
Burns Church Family. Because you have been diligent in
your support of Fifth Sunday Offerings, Missions
ministry feels both thankful and blessed.
Please keep these children and families in prayer and in
mind as you enjoy your summer vacation and Tax-Free
Weekend.
We are in the process of purchasing
school supplies. However, this year,
we need to provide more book-bags/
backpacks for the students. In
addition to storing school supplies,
book bags provide a more secure
and portable place for them to store
their "personal stuff".
Please consider donating a new, unused book bag to
this effort. Please select gender-neutral colors and
designs as well as age-appropriate bagselementary,
middle, and high school. We would like to provide at
least 100 book bags.
You may drop your Book bags/Backpacks donation off
at the Church. If you would like to make a monetary
donation, please make checks payable to Francis Burns
Mission Ministry and include in the memo section: Book
bags/Backpacks.
You may contact Adrinne Gee or Jacqueline Williams for
additional information. Thanks in advance for your
gifts, support, and prayers!
If anyone knows of great deals on book bags for older
students, please let us know. Again thank you for
sharing your blessings with those less fortunate and for
being there whenever Missions Ministry appeals to you
for help.

WHAT YOU HAVE IS ENOUGH FOR GOD

Status And Role Of Women
By Teresa Holland

The Status and Role of Women was proud to host

its first Girl Talk series on March 29, 2015 at 5pm. We
were blessed to have in attendance 13 ladies of all age
ranges. The session was facilitated by Dr. Evelyn
Fulmore. The scriptural focus came from 2Kings:4:2.
When the widow asked Elisha for help, she
halfheartedly offered her jar of oil thinking it not of
much value. This is how we see ourselves and our
gifts at times so we halfheartedly use them thinking
them not of much value. Dr. Fulmore spoke openly
and challenged each woman and girl on this thinking.
The attendees spoke freely and openly as we began to
form a covenant of love and support. Refreshments
were served.
The session scheduled for May 31, 2015 was
postponed due to the untimely hospitalization of Dr.
Fulmore. We are praising God that Dr. Fulmore is
doing better. The next session will be August 30, 2015
at 5:00pm in the fellowship hall as we continue our
theme, What You Have Is Enough for God as it relates
to relationships. Women and girls of all ages are
invited to attend.
Our status and role in the world and our nation
is to be living testimonies of Christs love and
compassion.
