Disciple-Making Roundtable
In the Great Commission, Jesus commissioned us to
MAKE DISCIPLES. This imperative is given to all
believers. While many of us have heard that as an
imperative for the church, we must realize we ARE
the church. As individual followers of Jesus, you
and I are commanded to go make disciples. It is not
something we pass off to the religious
professionals. In different churches, from sermons
I heard across the years, most preachers focused on
Ken May
the word GO. In the original Greek, the only Director of Missions
IMPERATIVE in that verse is MAKE DISCIPLES! The word
GO is in participle form and should be translated going, therefore,
MAKE DISCIPLES, or as you go, MAKE DISCIPLES. Going is
assumed. Disciple-making is commanded.
What is a disciple? How do we make disciples? Disciple-making is
a PROCESS whereby we lead someone to Christ and disciple them
to faithfully follow Him and Observe all that (He) has, commanded
(us). Disciple-making is not a Sunday night program or a six-week
course of study. It is the pouring of one life filled with Christ into
another life. The disciple-making process is not complete until the
disciple is in the practice of making other disciples.
Many of our churches have offered discipleship programs as classes
individuals take for a set period of time. Churches have purchased
discipleship products. However, completing a class does not make
you a mature disciple. Isnt it amazing that although our Lord commanded us to make disciples in His last words before ascending to
the Father, most churches still do not have a defined process for making disciples?
Well, we have a great opportunity to assist with developing that
process as we kick off our monthly ministers conference on
WEDNESDAY, August 26, at The Baptist Foundation of Alabama,
9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is longer than we usually meet, but we
will have time to explore more deeply the process with Claude King,
Lifeways discipleship specialist. All pastors and ministry staff are
invited. There will be a charge for the meal of $8.00, and
reservations are required. This is a tri-county event in conjunction
with our neighboring associations. Please make your reservation no
later than Friday, August 21, by contacting the MBA office at
271-6227 or office@mgmbaptist.org.
Lets get busy with doing what our Lord commanded us. Lets get
busy making disciples!
