and progress.
By the grace of the Almighty, we are an institution equipped with advanced
facilities, and in our research and academic programs we are ranked with
the best. Academic excellence, creativity and innovation are the hallmarks
of education at SEECS. There is therefore every reason for our students
to be proud of being part of their institution. I am confident that our BIT,
BICSE and BEE students will prove to be well-groomed and well-chiseled
graduates with a dynamic vision of their own. I count on each student of
SEECS as an ambassador of sound professionalism and moral values
nurtured at this institute.

NUST SEECS
the Mosaic of Excellence
All too often we are stuffing the heads of the young with the products of earlier innovations
rather than teaching them to be innovative. We treat their minds as storehouses to be filled
rather than as instruments to be used.
-- Robert Finch
As the seats of higher learning, universities have a very
demanding task if the education they impart has to
transform the economic, political, social and moral fabric
of their respective societies. Harvard, MIT, Yale, Oxford
and Cambridge have eminently contributed not only to
the intellectual prowess but also to the economic
development
of
their
respective
countries.

Academics at SEECS
SEECS is known for its exclusive academic environment and dynamism to
embody the best in engineering and computing education. All its
undergraduate and graduate programs have evolved as a result of pragmatic
research so as to educate and groom the enrolled students in the best
possible manner in their respective disciplines. All activities are designed
with clear and well-defined objectives.
The ultimate goal has always been to prepare sound professionals with
a progressive vision, committed to pursuit of excellence. This is ensured
through a well-formulated academic program with appropriate co-curricular
activities. The format of academic training at SEECS also nurtures in the
students the passion for hard work which is so vitally needed to sustain
and enhance a nation's socio-economic development. Equal emphasis is
laid on developing the student's ability to think creatively, and his / her
capacity to be able to analyse and solve practical problems. Besides
taking care of the students' academic and intellectual growth, adequate
attention is also paid on building their personalities on moral and social
plane. Merit is one of the distinguishing features of education at SEECS.
It is the sole criterion for decision-making at all levels from selection
of faculty and staff to admission and evaluation of students.
In line with NUST's policy of learning enhancement through studentfocused education, SEECS is committed to transfer of life-long learning
skills. Students' are limitlessly challenged so that they are able to discover
the best in themselves. Quality of instruction
is ensured at all levels by providing the best
possible infrastructure and conducive academic
environment. Students are amply exposed to
conferences, seminars, workshops and internship
program. Balanced curriculum with a sprinkling
of humanities subjects, dedicated faculty and
hi-tech laboratories are the hallmarks of
academics at SEECS.

Professional Training
Centers @ SEECS
SEECS professional credibility and its
image as a catalyst to a new paradigm
shift in higher education, marked with
an increasing emphasis on creativity and
innovation has attracted to its premises
some of the world class research
laboratories, as the coveted gifts from
more leading companies. These include

Industry Linkages
On the domestic front, SEECS has been quite successful, as one of the pioneers,
in knitting industry and academia into a meaningful partnership and working
in tandem on several practical ideas for the mutual benefit. This has helped
them jointly propel the dormant conditions of our technology and engineering
education centres. SEECS-Corporate Advisory Council that meets biannually
to exchange views with industry representatives is gradually evolving into a
vibrant forum of close interaction. This has greatly facilitated the two sides
to share very valuable inputs from each other and devise improved strategies
to achieve the goals of academia-industry partnership. SEECS industry linkages
have recently been extended overseas and a handful of projects have already
commenced in collaboration with US companies.

Faculty
At the Department of Electrical Engineering, we have a total of 19 faculty members
presently. Of these, there are five PhDs, each having done his doctorate from a reputed
university. In fact most of the faculty is qualified from leading universities of the world
like Michigan State University (USA), UNSW (Australia), Southampton University (UK), Delft
University (Netherlands), KTH (Sweden) to name a few. Together this mix of highly
proficient professionals provides a balanced mix of most of the areas of specialization in
the electrical engineering program. This wide spectrum of dedicated staff ensures quality
research and a high level of teaching. The faculty is actively pursuing research in their
respective areas of specialization thus providing students a unique blend of teaching
strengthened through research activities. No wonder the department of electrical
engineering at NUST-SEECS is fast emerging as the mainstay of engineering education and
research in Pakistan.

Automated Number Plate tracking and speed determination system for traffic
control: In this project, a system is designed that responds to the event of a car
breaking a red signal. In addition to responding to signal violation, the system also
be capable of determining the speed of moving vehicles. Physical features of the car
are utilized to first detect the presence of car in a video, and then to locate its number
plate. Car identification is implemented using horizontal edges of a car, while
number plate will be identified by locating symmetry based features in a car
i.e. brake lights. The approach is further be used to determine the vehicles speed,
by comparing the displacement of a reference point on the vehicle, in two successive

In this project, a system is designed that responds to the event of a car breaking
a red signal. The system will be capable of locating and extracting violators car
number plate as well as calculating its speed. A general system consists of four
main stages: Image acquisition, color detection, License plate area extraction and
over speeding calculation. Proposed techniques are based on identification of local
car features to reduce the area of search for license plate candidates, image
enhancement using intensity adjustment and over speeding calculation. The proposed

Panoramic View Generation and View Interpolation for Multi-View Imaging: Multiview imaging systems rely on acquiring multiple videos of the same object from multiple
views (angles). This increases visual information of the object being filmed as opposed
to recording a single video from a single view. Panoramic view generation involves
taking multiple videos/images and merging them to form a unified large resolution
video/image (mosaic). View interpolation is the process of generating synthetic views
of a scene from a limited number of views.

Forecasting the impact of widespread use of energy savers on the NTDC network of
Pakistan.
Energy savers, being non linear loads produce harmonics which are a poison to electrical
distribution system. Due to prevailing energy crisis, the use of energy savers has risen
exponentially and is being encouraged. This project aims at studying the architecture
of IESCO and forecasting the effects of using a large number of energy savers (10
million, proposed by WAPDA) on the IESCO distribution network of NTDC.
