During your work as a physician, you have had a great deal
of international experience. What is important when dealing
with the medical problems of patients from other cultures or
with different mentalities?
There are very great difference between the cultures in their attitudes to
illnesses or handicaps. People who are ill are less tolerant and must be
addressed cautiously. From the very start, you have to develop ambitious
but realistic objectives together with the patient and discuss these with
him. It may be necessary to use an interpreter with both medical and cultural knowledge. Not only the patient, but also all therapists and physicians
must be clearly informed of these objectives in order to achieve the best
possible results.
You have specialised in the treatment of chronic pain. How do
you adapt your treatment to the patients individual needs?
There is a major cultural and social influence in coping and processing
chronic pain. I try to emphasise the positive attitude, with understanding
and additional support from friends and family. The fundamental demand
for freedom of pain is not present everywhere in the world. In many cultures, pain is accepted as a normal part of life and in rehabilitation this can
be an advantage.

You are a specialist in osteopathy and anti-aging. What is the

focus of these two areas?
Osteopathy considers that each of us contains the mechanism of healing.
Osteopathic techniques attempt to eliminate the structural and physiological obstacles, so-called lessions or dysfunctions, and thus to provide
support for the bodys self-healing.
Anti-Aging is the teaching of good aging and attempts to counteract the
causes of cellular aging by various methods, including orthomolecular medicine, mesotherapy, acupuncture, stress prevention, nutritional counselling and sports medicine.
The combination of osteopathy and anti-aging can lead to very successful
cures.
Because of this rare combination, you are in great demand in
other countries. To what extent do your patients benefit from
this?
We have continuous international contacts, particularly with the GUS
countries. Together with the lectures I give and training therapists and
masseurs, this allows us to present new therapeutic concepts and approaches for rehabilitation. In autumn, studies in this area will be performed in
cooperation with major hospitals.
A wide spread of medical techniques are important to achieve the best outcome for our rehabilitation patients. It is important to explore the related
life circumstances surrounding the trigger for orthopedic diseases or chronic pain. We focus on successful outcomes for our patients, implementing
proven rehab strategies and methodologies, integrating the best outcomebased solutions for our patients.

You are both a physician and a

pharmacist. What are the advantages to your patients of
your extensive training?
The goal of medical training is to diagnose diseases and initiate the treatment. The goal of pharmaceutical
training is to explain the appropriate
drugs and possibly to extend the therapy. Because of my dual training, I
can effectively perceive and treat the
mechanisms of my patients diseases.
With your numerous scientific
publications and your international university research, you
have made a valuable contribution to science. To what extent
has this benefitted society?
Continuous publishing allows me to
stay up-to-date, therefore providing
optimal treatment for my patients.
Thus, I can focus on risk assessment
for disease prevention or attenuation,
if the illness has already developed.

Thanks to the

A rehabilitation centre is ideal for diabetes treatment and for instructing

diabetics. During his period in the centre, the patient can concentrate on
his diabetes, without being distracted by his normal routine.
Exercise programs during diabetes treatment reduce insulin resistance
and demonstrate the interaction between therapy that reduces blood sugar (for example, insulin) and the reduction in blood sugar caused by the
exercise. This can help to avoid low levels of sugar during the normal day.
Moreover, diabetes treatment includes detailed nutritional advice with
practical exercises. If the patients blood sugar is well controlled, it is less
likely that he will develop secondary diseases.
One of your special areas is the so-called insulin pump therapy in type 1 diabetes mellitus. How does this form of therapy
work and what are its advantages?
With the insulin pump, rapidly acting insulin is continuously administered
through a subcutaneous catheter. The basal rate is programmed at short
intervals and is close to the natural rate of insulin production. This optimises the basic insulin supply. The insulin pump is also used to administer insulin to cover carbohydrates that have been consumed. With insulin
pump therapy, metabolic control is more stable and the reaction is quicker
to changes in insulin requirements. The patient can be flexible in what he
eats and have more pleasure in his food. With pump therapy, it is easier
to manage a variable daily rhythm, for example, in jobs with travelling or
shift work.

You specialise in pulmonary diseases and allergies. Which clinical pictures do you see most often?
The most frequent diseases in pulmonary rehabilitation are COPD and
bronchial asthma.
What are the possible therapies for these diseases?
Aside from the newest drug therapies, pulmonary rehabilitation has the
greatest value. This has the objective of increasing physical activity and
of mastering the requirements of daily life, improving the quality of life,
maintaining ability to work, as well as preventing or slowing the progression of chronic pulmonary disease. All therapeutic measures are used in pulmonary rehabilitation: respiratory exercises (group and individual), inspiratory muscle strength and endurance training and inhalation treatment.

When a patient is referred to rehabilitation, an individual condition is usually specified. If there are problems with the locomotor system, this must
be regarded as a complex functional system and it is of essential importance to take appropriate measures to improve the function. Many patients
also exhibit concomitant diseases, find everyday activities difficult or suffer
from psychological or social problems. The sooner the patients are offered
the right degree of professional support in these different areas, the sooner
their state of health will improve.
What is unusual about your clinics geographical location?
The Raxblick Rehabilitation Clinic is located in the Semmering area, a
region with a long history as an area for recuperation. There are several
established spas in this region. The special climatic conditions are particularly favourable for patients with diseases of the respiratory tract. Rax
and Schneeberg are among the most popular mountains near Vienna. The
water quality in this area is also excellent; it is no accident that, since the
second half of the 19th century most of Viennas drinking water has been
taken from this region.

important are the connected clinical pictures at the moment?
These are related to hypertension, type 2 diabetes, breathing problems

complications and severe degenerative problems in pathologically obese
patients. This can improve the life expectancy and quality of life of extremely overweight individuals.
