Review: Socialization
A lifelong process of inheriting and disseminating norms,
customs and ideologies (adaptation)!
Provides skills and habits to participate within his or
her society!
the means by which social and cultural continuity are
attained

Agents of Socialization
Family - Makes a lasting impact in the life of a
person!
Schools - Potential is honed and their holistic devt
is given attention!
Peers - Gives a greater sense of autonomy, belonging
and feeling of acceptance

Religious Organization - Provides guidance for moral


values and principles!
Workplace - orientates him/her with the rules and
regulation that they must follow!
Mass Media - A very powerful source of socialization
that can have negative or positive eect on the
personality of a person

Psychological - Emphasizes that deviance is a result of
repressed emotional feeling!
Social-Psychological - Asserts people in the persons

Sociological - Not within the control of the individual

Crime

Crime
A form of Deviance!
Criminal is defined by Behavior when it is
disruptive and cannot be controlled by
informal means!
violates criminal law and will be served with
punishment

Kinds of Crime
Conventional/Street - Consists of Violent (actions involving
force or a threat of force) Property ( committed in order to
get money) and Morals (gambling, prostitution and drugs)!
White-collar/Occupational - Illegal acts done by people in
the course of their business activities (Crime in the suites)!
Corporate - Violations done by ocers and employees of
the corporation in favor of the firm.

Organized - Work of a group that deals with


business operations!
Political - Abuse of power and unethical
activities committed by persons in govt
positions

Professionals - Committed by career or


professional criminals whose means of
earning a living!
Hate - Criminal actions of people against a
person or to a persons belongings because
of race, religion sexual orientation or
disability

Crime: Sociological Perspective


Durkheims Structural-functional theory points
there is nothing wrong with deviance!
Interactionalists: deviance is relative and could be
explained in daily explanations.!
Conflict POV: Standards of the society cater to the
more advantaged members of society (products of
social inequality)

Social Control

Refers to the planned or unplanned process by


which people are taught, persuaded or forced to
conform to norms

Levels of Social Control

Conformity !
Obedience!
Conforms to the style of dressing of our friends
and obey the rules set by the Authority

Kinds of Social Control


Informal - Consists of unocial pressure intended to
convince potential deviants to conform to social
norms!
Formal - Ocial pressure imposed to persuade
would-be deviants to conform to social norms!
Internal - An internalized norms and values of society!
External - use of punishments or negative sanctions

Sociological Perspective
Functionalism - Survival of the society is dependent
on how people follow and give respect to societal
norms!
Conflict theory - non-conformity with the rules is
also necessary to bring some changes in the society

connections in order to fix and smooth out
dicult transactions!
Lagay - Bribe or grease money; The act of
Filipinos that we regard people as things
that which could be bought with money

Filipino Personality
In a research, it shows that the strengths of filipinos
are: pakikipag-kapwa tao, family orientation, joy and
humor, flexibility, creativity, faith and religiosity and
the ability to survive!
Weaknesses stems from the strengths!
Clique-syndrome, extreme personalism, extreme
family-centeredness, lack of discipline, Passivity, lack
of initiative, colonial mentality and kanya-kanya

Social Interactions
