3. (a) The open loop transfer function of a unity feedback control system is given by
G(s) = s(sTK+1) .
i. By what factor the amplifier gain K should be multiplied so that the
damping ratio is increased from 0.2 to 0.8.
ii. By what factor the time constant T should be multiplied so that the
damping ratio is reduced from 0.6 to 0.3.
(b) Consider the unit step response of a unity feedback control system whose
1
open loop transfer function is G(s) = s(s+1) . Calculate rise time, peak-time,
maximum peak over shoot. [8+8]

(b) Obtain the state model of the system whose transfer function is given as
s2 +6s+8
(s+3)(s2 +2s+2)
. [8+8]

5. (a) Define feedback and what are the various advantages and disadvantages of
feedback? Explain.

Code No: 14019 NR Set No. 2
(b) The block diagram of a position control system is shown in Figure 4. Deter-
mine the sensitivity of closed-loop transfer function ‘T’ with respect to ‘G’
and ‘H’, for ω=1 rad/sec. [6+10]

Figure 4
6. Sketch the root locus plot a unity feed back system with an open loop transfer
function G(s) = s(s+2)K(s+4) . Find the range K for which the system has damped
oscillatory response. Explain the procedures for constructing root locus. [16]

7. Consider the system shown in Figure 3: Show that the steady-state error for unit-
ramp input is B/K. This error can be made smaller by choosing B small and/or K
large. However, making B small and/or K large would have the effect of making
the damping ratio small, which is normally not desirable. Describe a method or
methods to make B/K small and yet make the damping ratio have reasonable value
(0.5 < ξ < 0.7). [16]

8. Determine the transfer function of lead compensation network that will provide a
phase lead of 500 and gain margin of 10 db at ω = 8 rad/sec. [16]
