2.a) Using star delta transformation find the current and power supplied by the battery as
shown in figure.
b) Describe in detail the steps to apply superposition theorem. [10+6]
3.a) What is meant by inductance? Obtain the expression for the same.
b) A magnetic circuit has a uniform cross sectional area of 5 sq.cm and a length of 25 cm. A
coil of 100 turns is wound uniformly around the magnetic circuit. When the current in the
coil is 2A, the flux is 0.3 wb. Calculate
i) Magnetizing force.
ii) Relative permeability.
iii) Magnetic flux density. [6+10]
6.a) Derive from first principles an expression for the emf induced in the armature of the DC
machine.
b) Explain in detail, the principle of operation of a simple loop DC generator. [4+12]

1a) What is electric current? Explain in detail the conventional flow of electrons in a circuit.
b) How are the materials classified based on their conductivity? Explain with suitable
examples. [8+8]
2.a) Find the equivalent resistance between the terminals x and y in the circuit as shown in the
figure.
7.a) Explain the revolving field type and the revolving armature type alternators.
b) A 6 pole DC generator is running and producing a frequency of 60 Hz. Calculate the
revolutions per minute of the generator. If the frequency is decreased to 20 Hz, how
many number of poles will be required if the generator is to be run at the same speed.
c) Give the difference between a DC generator and an alternator. [6+6+4]

1.a) A copper wire of diameter 1cm has resistance of 0.15 Ω . It was drawn under pressure so
that its diameter was reduced to 50%. What is the new resistance of the wire?
b) State and explain Faradays law of electromagnetic induction. [10+6]
2.a) State Thevenin’s theorem. Discuss its significance on the network theory.
b) For the circuit shown in figure, find the resistance between the terminals A and B.
[4+12]
3.a) Prove K = M L1 L2 .
b) A primary coil having an inductance of 100 µ H is connected in series with a secondary
coil of 240 µ H and the total inductance of the combination is measured as 146 µ H .
Determine the coefficient of coupling. [6+10]
5.a) What is the difference between an ideal transformer and a practical transformer?
b) Derive the approximate equivalent circuit of a 1 phase transformer. [4+12]
6.a) Sketch the O.C characteristics of a self excited DC generator. Explain in detail about the
critical speed and the critical resistance.
b) Explain the motoring and generator actions of a DC machine. [10+6]

1.a) A 100W, 250V bulb is put in series with a 40W, 250V bulb across a 500V supply. What
will be the power consumed by each bulb? Will such a combination work?
b) State and explain Kirchoff’s current law and voltage law. [10+6]
2.a) A generator feeds a load resistance RL through a network. How can you find the value of
RL for maximum power transfer?
b) Using Thevenin's theorem, find the current through RL = 10 Ω , in the network shown in
figure. [6+10]
4.a) A coil of power factor 0.9 is in series with a 120 µ F capacitor. When connected to a
50Hz supply, the potential difference across the coil is equal to the potential difference
across the capacitor. Find the resistance and inductance of the coil.
b) A metal filament lamp rated 750W, 110V is to be connected in series with a capacitor
across a 220V, 50Hz supply. Calculate
i) The capacitance required.
ii) The power factor. [8+8]
5.a) A 3300/220 V, 30KVA, 1 phase transformer takes a no load current of 1.5A when the
low voltage winding is open. The iron loss component is 0.4 A. Find:
i) No load input power.
ii) Magnetizing component.
iii) Power factor of no load current.
b) Why is a transformer rated in KVA?
c) Explain the various features of an ideal transformer. [10+2+4]
6.a) Derive the expression for the armature torque and shaft torque of a DC motor.
b) The armature of a 6 pole, DC shunt motor takes 300 A at the speed of 400 revolutions per
minute. The flux per pole is 75 mWb. The number of armature turns is 500. The torque
lost in windage, friction and iron losses can be assumed a 2.5%. Calculate.
i) Torque developed by the armature.
ii) Shaft torque.
iii) Shaft power in KW. [6+10]
