PET OF THE WEEK

You're gonna flip when you meet Skip! This

handsome man was transferred from MADACC
(Milwaukee Animal Control) due to lack of space
where he came in as a stray. Skip was then
adopted but returned due to his housebreaking
struggles. Skip is the classic example of a Beagle: sweet natured,
comical, strong willed, tolerant with handling, curious, vocal, and very
sociable. He longs for an active adult household that will take him on
adventures. The world is his oyster and one day he is sure to sniff out that
pearl! He does enjoy pampering and wants to be the only pet in your
household. Teenagers 15 and up that are ready and willing to assist in

vigor. If Beagles are up your alley, this handsome boy is merely a hop,

skip, and jump away! Come visit him soon before he Skips out!

Tip of the Week: Most dogs enjoy swimming, but some cant and some hate the water. Never throw your dog in
the water. If you are swimming with your dog for the first time, start in very shallow water and coax them in.
Swimming is hard work, so dont let your pet overdue it and get too tired.

New fire stations serving Falls, Lannon begin operation

BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The next era of fire service for the villages of Menomonee Falls and Lannon has
now begun.
The communities marked the official
opening of the Menomonee Falls/Lannon
Fire Station 1 at the southwest corner of
Main Street and Menomonee Avenue Aug.
6. At the start of this year, the Lannon Fire

Department was consolidated into the

Menomonee Falls Fire Department, with
several Lannon Fire Department staff coming on board with the combined department.
As part of overall changes within the
Menomonee Falls Fire Department, the
new Fire Station 1 has replaced the previous Fire Station 1 on Appleton Avenue just
south of Main Street. During the ribbon
cutting for the new station, Menomonee
Falls Director of Protective Services Anna
Ruzinski said that the last "tone out" for the
Appleton Avenue station was held at 6
a.m. Aug. 1. The American flag at that station was lowered and then transferred to
the new Fire Station 1.
In addition, Menomonee Falls also
constructed a new fire station along Silver
Spring Drive in Menomonee Falls to serve
the southwest portion of the community.
During comments at the ribbon cutting,
Menomonee Falls Village Manager Mark
Fitzgerald noted the village has made "systematic changes to staffing, our organizational structure, our personnel, our command staff and our facilities. It has been
ongoing change on an incremental basis -and frankly, it's probably been overwhelming."
Fitzgerald noted that change can be
difficult and said "we clearly had people
that left our fire service, but now we have
people who are poised to stay here, work
within this combination department and
serve the residents of both the
villageMenomonee Falls and the village of
Lannon for the long term."
Fitzgerald noted that with the facility

changes, all stations are now staffed on a

24-7 basis -- which wasn't in place in the
Appleton Avenue station -- and noted that
there are four stations on the corners of
Menomonee Falls while the village's
administrative operations are in station 3,
which is near the village's center.
Fitzgerald also pointed to the name on
Fire station 1, which reads "Menomonee
Falls/Lannon 1."
"That is not a trivial matter," Fitzgerald
said. He said the name is meant to verify
the partnership between the villages. He
noted that with the combined department,
Menomonee Falls "gained significant manpower and equipment from Lannon that
helped make this all work."
Fitzgerald also mentioned the role
played by the School District of
Menomonee Falls in making the new Fire
Station I possible. The district previously
owned the property, which had at one time
been the location of Sunnyside School.
However, the school had been closed for
decades and the previous building was
used by the district's maintenance department. The village acquired the property in
exchange for the village turning over a surplus maintenance building just east of the
Village Hall to the district.
"This is a perfect site for our fire station
network and we couldn't be more happy,"
Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald also thanked Public Works
Director Arlyn Johnson, who served as project manager for the Fire Station 1 project,
for addressing issues during the construction.
Lannon Village President David Nagler

noted he joined the Lannon Fire

Department as an emergency medical
technician in 2011. At the time, Nagler said
Lannon was a volunteer, paid on call
department with members who are trying
to get full-time positions with other department.
"From my two years on the Fire
Department, as a resident I really didn't
want to see our Fire Department go away,"
Nagler said. "However, being on the
department and getting elected (I) realized
the costs to run a department don't get less,
they keep getting more and more."
Nagler added that Lannon and
Menomonee Falls have an intermunicipal
agreement in which Menomonee Falls provides snowplowing services for Lannon in
the winter.
"It just made sense to do this consolidation," he said. Nagler said when he was
elected village president in 2013, he took
over for negotiations that were previously
started. He also took note of the fact that
the Lannon name does appear on the new
Fire Station 1 and that 14 Lannon Fire
Department members transferred over to
the Menomonee Falls Department. Ruzinski
later added that Patrick Curtis came from
the Lannon Fire Department and is now a
battalion chief while Kevin Porter came
from Lannon to be a part-time lieutenant
with the Falls Department.
"The Lannon Fire Department doesn't
really disappear, there is still a presence,"
Nagler said.

Scleroderma walk Aug. 16

The 7th Annual "Stepping Out to Cure
Scleroderma" walk in Germantown, will be
held on Sunday, Aug. 16.
This annual walk raises money for the
Scleroderma
Foundation,
Greater
Chicago Chapter, which provides support,
education and research for scleroderma
patients. Scleroderma is a chronic, often
progressive, autoimmune disease in which
the immune system attacks its own body.
The disease can cause thickening and tightening of the skin. In some cases it causes
serious damage to internal organs including the heart, lungs, kidneys, esophagus
and gastrointestinal tract. These organs
may slowly harden until they become ineffective. Some treatments can help with certain symptoms, but there is still no cure for
scleroderma. The disease affects three to
four times as many women as men.
The walk will take place at Kinderberg
Park, N104W14942 Donges Bay Road,
Germantown. Registration will start at 7:30
a.m. and the walk will begin at 9:00 a.m.
The event will take place rain or shine. The
cost is $20 per walker. Children under 12
walk for free. The day includes food,
music, t-shirts, raffle prizes and activities for
families. Dogs are welcome. Register for
the1- or 3-mile walk online at scleroderma.org/steppingoutgermantown.

Advanced online registration is recommended, but participants may also register

in person the day of the walk. For more
information or to request a Stepping Out to

New faces, same approach for Germantown football

One thing will remain the same for
Germantown football this year.
"Just hard nosed football and getting
after it. That's what we do," Germantown
Coach Jake Davis said during an Aug. 10
interview. "We're going to make hay on
offense and stop you on defense. That's
what we try to live on."
There will be plenty of new faces for the
Germantown team this year. Three-year
starting quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn, Jr.
graduated and Davis said he wasn't set on
the personnel for the position.
"We've got guys that played," Davis
said. "We (don't have) an overabundance
of experience, that's what we're going to
have to make up for this year. But we'll get
there."

He added that "there's been guys waiting in the wings" for the opportunity. I think
they're ready to go."
The program also remains strong with
the number of participants, as there are 60
players on the varsity squad and 130 players in the overall program.
The team will be tested right away, as
they play at Kenosha Indian Trails Aug. 21
and host Waukesha Catholic Memorial the
next week before beginning North Shore
Conference play. Davis said the team
came into practice prepared, as several
players participated in 7-on-7 competitions.
Davis indicated that the schemes on
offense and defense will likely remain the
same.
We are what we are. We have a our

base system offense, we are flexible
enough to adapt within our system. I would
expect the same Germantown football,"

Davis said.

New offense part of changes for Falls football

A new season will feature a new
offense for Menomonee Falls football.
During an Aug. 11 interview, Coach
Dan Lutz said the team has a "totally new
offense" along with changes to the special
teams.
Lutz moves in the head coach position
after serving as an assistant with the program for the past three years. Lutz was a
head coach at Brookfield Academy for five
years prior to coming to the Falls program.
"It's been a real good transition,"Lutz
said.
Starting quarterback Bryce McMurtry
returns and is accompanied by a new set of
receivers. Three linemen return and the
defensive back return.
"It's a combination (of new and return-

ing starters) on both sides of the ball," Lutz

said.
Falls has a numbers advantage for its
program, as Lutz noted he had to order
more helmets for this season. There are 87
players on the varsity and junior varsity
squads. Lutz said tradition and a larger
number of seniors coming out for the program are part of the reasons for the large
number of players.
While much is new, a first goal remains
the same.
"Our first goal is always to make the
playoffs," Lutz said. "Do well, get a winning
conference record, that's goal number one
(which will qualify the team for the playoffs). Then after that, we'll see."
Lutz said his team "will be aggressive,

we'll play with our heart and we'll play
with guts."

Same schemes, new faces for Hamilton football

The offseason went well for the
Hamilton High School program. During an
Aug. 12 interview, Coach John Damato
noted that attendance in the weight room
was around 95 percent.
"A mainstay of this program has been
our weight room and it has kept us competitive and it's getting us opportunities to
be successful," Damato said. "The seniors
did an outstanding job of holding their
teammates accountable and we're hoping
it's going to pay off."
The program has also held its own in

the number of players out for the program.

There are around 43 players on the freshman teams while the youth program that
precedes high school play is at the highest
level in many years. There are around 65
players on the varsity roster.
The offense continues to be the Wing T
with the play action pass while defensive
schemes remain the same. Damato said the
special teams is "ahead of schedule."
This year's team returns three starters
on offense and six starters on defense.
"We have some inexperience but we

have some great attitudes and some kids
who are competing day in and day out for
a position," Damato said. "Going into the
scrimmage (at Waukesha West Aug. 14)
should tell us a lot about who we have moving forward. I don't think I've ever gone into
a scrimmage with so many question marks,
but at the same time in saying that it's not a
bad thing -- it's all about competition and
there's opportunity there with those question marks. The kids understand that."
Heading into the Waukesha West
scrimmage, Damato now has the advantage of the turf surface in the school's new

athletic center.
"It nice having both (turf and natural
grass fields), we've never had both. This is
new for us," Damato said.
For all the change, this season Damato
said Hamilton will seek to produce its
brand of hard, physical football.
"If the kids come and continue to work
day in and day out, they're going to put
themselves in a position to be successful
and compete for every game," Damato
said.
