1996 ARRL Handbook for Radio Amateurs Companion Disk

Version 1.0
Welcome to the companion disk for the 1996 ARRL Handbook! This
disk includes software associated with several areas of the book
(to find the programs in the book, look in the index under "Programs:")
and some applications that are not mentioned in the book. Here
are simple descriptions of the archive files. Comprehensive
directories of the achive files follow. The total number of bytes
at the end of each listing indicates how much disk space you will
need to install the software in that archive.
Please use the INSTALL program on this disk to copy the files to
your hard disk. If you place the disk into the A: drive, you would type
A:INSTALL <Enter>. Although you may override it, the default subdirectory
INSTALL creates on your hard drive is C:\HBK96, with 10 subdirectories
beneath it:
\HBK96\A2D
\HBK96\ACTFIL
\HBK96\COILS
\HBK96\ELLERS
\HBK96\MORSE
\HBK96\NSHADOW
\HBK96\PINET
\HBK96\TIS
\HBK96\TL
\HBK96\VESTER
-...A2D.EXE

Author: Paul Danzer, N1II

A2D.BAS accepts input from a computer printer port and

permits you to manipulate and/or display that data by
modifying the BASIC program. See "PC Voltmeter and SWR
Bridge," in the Station Accessories chapter, for an
explanation of the hardware and software.
-...ACTFIL.EXE

Author: Jon Bloom, KE3Z

Is a program to design some simple active filters. See "Active

Filters," in the Filters chapter for details of the filters.
The program is self explanatory. The "circuit file" option
produces a text file suitable for analysis with ARRL Radio
Designer.
-...COILS.EXE

Author: Brian Beezley, K6STI

Brian Beezley's COIL.EXE program calculates the important

characteristics of solenoid (not toroid) coils. The program
saves parameters of the current coil when it ends, so that you
can resume work on the same coil when you next use it. If run
from a write-protected disk, this feature produces a disk
error on ending. Also take care to specify realistic coils.
The software will accept input for a coil where adjacent

windings occupy the same space simultaneously--and report a

net capacitance for the coil.
-...CTL3DV2.DLL

Author: Jon Bloom, KE3Z

This Windows DLL may be needed with TISFIND. See the TISFIND
online help (Using 3D Controls) for details.
-...ELLER.EXE

Author: Richard Ellers, K8JLK

Creates ELLERS.EXE program and support files to calculate

placement and length for a coil-loaded shortened dipole using
an existing pair of inductors. For details, see "ComputerAided Design of Loaded Short-Doublet Antennas," in the
Antennas chapter. File ELLERS.DOC explains the program
operation.
-...INSTALL.EXE

Author: Jon Bloom, KE3Z

A program to read this file and install the software on

another disk, usually a hard disk. Install accepts user input
for the destination directory, and expands the archive
contents to the chosen directory. TISFIND requires a separate
installation under Windows. See instructions under TISFIND.
-...MORSE.EXE

Author: Ralph Taggart, WB8DQT

A program to send and read CW with an IBM-compatible computer

and a simple hardware interface. See "Quick and Easy CW with
your PC," in the Station Accessories chapter, for details.
-...SHADOW.EXE

Author: Irv McNally, K6WX

Creates NSHADOW.EXE program to help locate local true north in

order to orient directional antennas. See "North Shadow," in
the Antennas and Projects chapter, for details.
-...PINET.EXE

Elmer Wingfield, W5FD

Several programs to aid design of Pi and Pi-L matching

networks, as described under "Tank Output Circuits" in the
Amplifiers chapter. These programs work for 80, 40, 20, 15 and
10 m only. They do not cover the additional bands allocated in
the 1979 WARC. Two .DOC files and -README.1ST give
instructions.
-...-

README.TXT
This file.
-...TIS.EXE

Author: Jon Bloom, KE3Z

Data compiled by Mike Tracy, KC1SX

Contains TISFIND.EXE (and related files), a Windows database

look-up program used to view databases distributed by ARRL.
Included with TISFIND is the ARRL TIS Address Database, which
contains address and contact information for over 900
companies and organizations of interest to amateurs.
You can run TISFIND from Windows in one of two ways:
1) Select the File|Run item from Program Manager's menu, then
type the following into the "Command Line" box:
C:\HBK96\TIS\TISFIND.EXE
(This assumes you installed TISFIND into the default
C:\HBK96\TIS directory. If not, specify the directory you
did install into.)
2) To make an icon you can use to run TISFIND, first activate
the Program Manager program group you want to insert the
icon into by clicking in the program group window once.
Then select File|New from the Program Manager menu. When
the "New Program Object" window comes up, click on "Program
Item," then click the "Ok" button. In the "Command Line"
box of the Program Item Properties window, type the name of
the TISFIND program as shown above in option 1. Then click
the "Ok" button. Windows should install the icon, which you
can then double-click to launch TISFIND.
More information about using TISFIND is available in its
online help.
-...TL1.EXE

Dean Straw, N6BV

This archive contains the files TL.EXE and TL.DOC. TL computes

many parameters for transmission lines, as well as antenna-tuner
parameters -- including losses and stresses. See Transmission Line
chapter.
-...VESTER_F.EXE

Ben Vester, K3BC

This archive contains the many files that make up Ben Vester's
slow-scan TV system. "An Inexpensive SSTV System," in the
Modulation Sources chapter, describes the necessary hardware
and gives an overview of the system. Numerous text files in
this archive tell how to set up, modify and use the system. Be
sure to read the three README files.

NOTE: This set of programs is not for the computer novice! It

requires knowledge of the BASIC programming language to modify
parameters to make it run on your particular computer system.
-...Each of the files has been compressed using LHA, an archiving
program by Haruyasu Yoshizaki (LHA version 2.13, copyright
Haruyasu Yoshizaki, 1988-91).
Some of these files may include shareware. If you elect to
keep that software and use it, please register your copy with the
author and pay all necessary registration fees.
