I. LEARNING SESSION TITLE

Using and Producing Videos for Instruction

II. DESCRIPTION

Videos can be a valuable asset used in the classroom as a demonstration tool or


as a student resource accessible outside the classroom. Participants will explore
various types of videos before embarking on a project that will be planned and
executed during the learning session.

This training highlights the following:


 Plan a video project after first identifying available resources.
 Capture video with external device or record a screencast.
 Produce the video using campus resources such as the DLIT mini
studio.
 Publish to Blackboard or GRCC YouTube for student access.

TARGET POPULATION

All faculty who would like to create videos that can be used in the classroom or
accessed using internet resources.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Blackboard, a Web browser and Internet.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
 Investigate video resources appropriate for the class and already
available for use.
 Distinguish between video captured with an external device and a
screencast video.
 Consider options for do-it-yourself recording devices such a Flip
video, digital video, webcam, or camcorder.
 Plan video project to include Powerpoint instructional slides and
screencast or digital video footage.
 Identify and use production equipment in the DLIT Mini Studio or on
computers equipped with Camtasia Studio.
 Apply techniques necessary to edit a video project.
 Identify options for video publication.

 Explore best practices and discuss how videos can be used in
teaching and learning.

TEACHING STRATEGIES

 Demonstrate videos produced using various recording techniques.


 Students will actively participate in planning a short video that
includes a screencast or digital video footage.
 Students will participate in capturing video footage or screencast
 Students will create title or instructional slides
 Instructors will demonstrate video editing techniques and students
will participate with a hands on approach
 Instructors will demonstrate publishing options

ASSESSMENT

Throughout the training there will be periodic checks for understanding via:

 Oral Quizzing
 Hands On Self Assessments

Participants will, also, complete the standard Learning Academy for Faculty &
Staff learning opportunity evaluation form. Six to 8 weeks after the session,
participants will receive a follow up survey regarding the use of material covered
in the learning opportunity in relation to their college work.
