WORK PROCEDURE

The suitable site for this practical had been located infront of BengkeL
Ukur in Kuching Sarawak Polytechnique by my group and I (Group 2).
During fieldwork, the total station was set up at each point in the control
network in turn and used to locate detail from them. Below is the step by
step procedure to survey the details.
2.1

Traversing

Traversing had been conducted by using Leica total station.

Two control points (Station 1 and Station 3) had been established

with each station distance was more than 30 meters.

Leica Total Station had been setup on Station 2 and prisms at

Station1 and Station 3.

The bearing had been assumed which was 180 00 00
The instruments height had been measured which were 1.356
meters (Leica), 1.250 meters (Mini Prism).

2.2

Pickup details
Traditionally, two people have been required to locate detail using
total station : one operating the Leica Total station and the other

holding the detail pole

Automation survey concept had been used
The details around the practical area had been measured and

recorded
The details were roads, parking lots, trees and so on
Leica Total station was used to measure and record the details but
the operator is needed to be alerted and always pressed the All

button to save all the data.

If the sunlight too hot, Leica Total station was covered by an
umbrella so that the measurements will not be affected.

The mini prism was centred rightfully in order to obtain accurate

details.

2.3

Downloading data

The data from Leica Total Station were downloaded to computer

using Civil Design and Survey Software

This is the crucial part because if the raw data are not downloaded

properly, the next chapter cannot be done

Three components involved; Computer (CDS Software installed),

Cable (connector or USB), and Leica Total Station (Data recorder)

The total station was connected with computer by using cable
As data processor, the format of the raw data was knew belong to

Leica Total Station

After downloaded the data, the raw data was opened in CDS stadia

file
The CDS stadia file was checked if the recorded data in good shape

or not
Stadia file for the job have been created

2.4

Processing and editing data

Stadia file was processed in order to calculate coordinates and

height for measurement data

Topography data was shown graphically and was exported into

drawing (*.dwg) format

The new row was inserted before the first station row to enter the

coordinates and height values of control points for datum

After all coordinates and height for measurement data have been

calculated
Topography details was shown graphically
The details graphic in CDS was exported in AutoCAD
Engineering plan or topography plan for practical 1 was produced.

Summary Steps:
1. Set the instrument up over the station required
2. Use the Automation Survey concept; Instrument height, Reflector
3.
4.
5.
6.

height, Bearing & Distance of datum, Coordinate of datum

Select a nearby control station as reference object
Mount the mini prism at the detail point required
Observe the actual recorded point
Repeat the procedure 3-5 until all the observations have been

completed
7. Select the detail points in a clockwise
8. Download the data to computer via USB or cable
9. Process the data by using Civil Design & Survey (CDS)
10. Edit the data bu using AutoCAD to produce Engineering Plan
