Trip Summary

We will be flying through London on our way to four nations in this order:
Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia (in Eastern Africa) and Ghana (in Western Africa). In
Uganda, we fly into Entebbe and drive to the Tororo/Nagongera area for an
outdoor, rural concert. In Ethiopia, we fly into Addis Ababa, the capital for an
indoor, urban concert. In Zambia, we fly to Lusaka, and drive to Ndola for an
outdoor, urban concert. And in Ghana, we fly to Accra, the capital, and tour there.

1
Introductory Information

TIME: Uganda and Ethiopia are seven hours ahead of EDT, while
Zambia is six hours ahead of EDT. Ghana is only four hours ahead.
So we will have the most jet lag at the start of the trip and will be
gaining back hours as we travel.

WEATHER: We will not be far from the equator during this trip, so we will
experience 12 hours of daylight from roughly 6:30 am to 6:30 pm in most of our
destinations. (When we are in Zambia, we will actually be in the Southern
Hemisphere!) The weather will vary across our destinations. Uganda and Zambia
will have humid days with high temps in the mid-80s and
cooler evenings in the 50s. Ethiopia, on the other hand, will
be cooler—with daytime highs in the low 60s and lows in
the 50s/40s. And for those of you not getting married and
therefore going on with us to Ghana (where we will say
goodbye to future grooms Lucien and Drew and faithful
sidekicks Andrew and Carissa Gallo), Ghana will be a little warmer than all of the
above, with daytime highs in the low 80s and evening lows in the 70s.

ALTITUDE: You may not notice any difference in

altitude until we reach Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which
is at 8300 feet—the third highest capital in the world.
Nagongera, Uganda is at 3517 feet; Ndola, Zambia,
is at 4281 feet; and Accra, Ghana, is at 325 feet. By
comparison, DC and Philadelphia are practically at sea level—under 100 feet.
Staying hydrated is most important at high altitudes. If you have ever had any
problems breathing, you may also want to bring an emergency inhaler.

ELECTRICITY: All electricity in Africa runs on a higher

voltage than in the U.S., so you will need both converters and
adapters for your U.S. equipment. Most of your computer
equipment will be dual voltage (those square boxes on your
power cords can verify this info), but you will still need
adapters for your plugs. You can get those online from
Amazon (recommended) or from the AAA store. You will need adapters marked
for the UK (Zambia, Uganda) and France (Ethiopia, Ghana) for where we are
going. Due to fluctuations in electricity current, you may also want to have a 220-
volt surge protector for your computer equipment.

HEALTH: In addition to the shots you have received, you will also be taking
Malarone to prevent malaria. One of the most common side-effects of Malarone

2
are oral canker sores. If you are prone to such, you may
want to purchase Listerine (proven to prevent and
reduce canker sores), as well as canker sore medicine
to have with you on the trip (including meds that cover
sores and help them to heal faster). That said, I also
suggest that you start taking high-dosage vitamin B
supplements. This may prevent mouth irritation (it
worked for me last time). You will also want to purchase bug repellent with near
100% DEET, such as Deep Woods OFF.

DRESS: Adult men in Africa don’t wear shorts very often and women wear skirts
more often than American women do. We may want to adjust our own wardrobes
accordingly. (Film crew: Please pack more tailored shirts and pants for church
services because we may be attending and not filming.) Hats are highly
recommended! Make sure to pack at least one.

MONEY: Uganda’s currency is the Ugandan shilling (currently $1=2,070 UGX).

Ethiopia’s currency is the birr (currently $1=11 ETB). Zambia’s unit of
currency is the kwacha (currently $1=4,870 ZMK). Ghana’s currency is
the cedi (currently $1=1.5 GHS). For your personal purchases, you will
need to bring cash or have access to ATMs in major cities. In Uganda,
US bills are only accepted if printed after and including 2001; they
must be in good condition (not torn) and preferably in large
denominations of the new style bills. Credit cards are accepted only at
larger hotels and restaurants and certainly not outside of Kampala and
Entebbe. In Addis, Ethiopia, ATMs are more accessible in major hotels,
but the networks are often down. Ndola, Zambia, is a larger city and
credit cards are frequently accepted in hotels and restaurants, but not
as commonly in shops. In Accra, Ghana, ATM machines are available,
but may not always work.

LANGUAGE: English and Swahili are Uganda’s official first and second
languages, though more than 40 local languages exist. Amharic is the
national language of Ethiopia, though English is understood in many
tourist areas in Addis. Zambia’s official language is English, though
there are 73 other dialects spoken there too. And in Ghana, English is
the official language, though many tribes also speak various dialects of
Twi.
