Dr.

Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor

Worth Fighting For

Janet and I greatly treasure our friendships in the family of

God at First Baptist Church of Naples. We have had the
most wonderful 23 years of ministry here and look forward
to even more time of service in this strategic place. Thank
you for the many expressions of love, support, prayer, and
gratitude in the dozens of birthday cards, as well as the
special gifts. We also enjoyed a special celebration with the
deacons, deacons wives, and staff on Thursday. Though
there is a lot of mileage on my tires, Gods warranty and
guarantee still stands. He promised years ago through
a passage in Isaiah to give men in exchange for my life (Isaiah 43:4). It is
amazing to watch how that exchange has produced spiritual and material fruit.
We could not imagine a happier place in which to serve and to raise a family of
two generations.
To his Philippian friends, the apostle Paul not only said, I thank my God in all
of my remembrance of You, but also that they were in every prayer of his. He
interceded with perseverance and love (Philippians 1:3, 4). A new Christian film
by the Kendrick brothers from Sherwood Baptist Church highlights the power
and necessity of prayer. War Room is scheduled to be in our area theaters next
weekend. I know Alex and Stephen, having done a project with them at their
church and was also privileged to visit with them this summer about their vision
for Christian film-making. War Room builds upon the success of Facing the
Giants, Fireproof, and Courageous. The director and actor-brother team saw a
correlation between a military war room and a prayer closet and decided to film
a story about how a marriage and a family are worth fighting for.
The movie follows a middle class couple whose marriage is falling apart. With
the help of a new Christian friend, Elizabeth discovers that she can powerfully
and perseveringly battle for her marriage through prayer instead of fighting
against her husband. Priscilla Shirer, a well-known womens speaker and
daughter of Pastor Tony Evans, plays Elizabeth. Alex Kendrick commented
about this theme, When you are truly chasing God and worshiping Him in
sincerity, something powerful happens. They and their pastor, my friend
Michael Catt, have certainly prayed over their previous films and given a strong
gospel witness.
I urge you to see this film and commit to pray for your family. Put on the whole
armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but againstthe spiritual forces
of evil in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:11, 12). We suit up for battle that
we might make supplication for all the saints (Ephesians 6:18). Also, keep
praying for me, my family, and the many needs in our nation. Its worth it!
*There is a guest reception in the Commons following the Saturday night and
Sunday morning worship services. Pastor would love to meet you!
