the European Greens are co-organising a
major divestment conference in Paris in

opportunities for a sustainable financial
system.

Climate change is one of the most urgent

challenges of this century. The European
Investment Bank has recognized this
challenge and is consistently supporting
low-carbon and climate resilient growth in
Europe and around the world. Over the
last 5 years the EIB has invested more
than 88bn into climate action projects
which makes the EIB the largest climate
investor in the world. The upcoming
public consultation is part of a review of
the Banks approach to supporting
climate action aimed at formulating
strategic orientations and priorities for the
future.

TBC

The review process is taking place in

parallel to the ongoing climate
negotiations on a successor
agreement to the Kyoto Protocol. The
new agreement is to be concluded in late
2015 and the EIB plans to present its
strategic orientations right in time for
these events.
The consultation seeks to solicit views
and input from a wide array of

stakeholders on issues such as the

Banks climate due diligence,
assessment tools, processes and
procedures, the design and management
of specific financial products, and on the

The Arctic sea ice minimum marks
the day, each year, when the sea ice
extent is at its lowest. The sea ice
minimum occurs at the end of the
summer melting season.

The summer melt season usually
begins in March and ends sometime
during September. The sea ice
minimum has been occurring later in
recent years because of a longer
melting season. However, ice growth
and melt are local processes; sea ice
in some areas will have already
started growing before the date of
the sea ice minimum, and ice in

other areas will still shrink even after

the date of the minimum.

Changes in the timing of the sea ice
minimum extent are especially
important because more of the sun's
energy reaches Earth's surface
during the Arctic summer than
during the Arctic winter. As
explained above, sea ice reflects
much of the sun's radiation back into
space, whereas dark, ice-free ocean
water absorbs more of the sun's
energy. So, reduced sea ice during
the sunnier summer months has a
big impact on the Arctic's overall
energy balance.
