Students Chosen for All-County
KCS students represented the district at the Genesee Valley School Music Association’s All-County festivals. The fifth and sixth
grade chorus and band as well as the high school jazz ensemble performed February 5-6 at Avon Central School. The senior high
chorus and senior high band representatives performed on February 26-27 at Mount Morris Central School. The All-County senior
high chorus and junior high band will perform March 5-6 at Dansville Central School. Congratulations to all the students who
participated as well as vocal music teachers Cheryl Sanford and Kim Coffey and instrumental music teachers Danielle Willowglade and
Rob DeSantis.

Students Donate to Backpack Program

For two weeks prior to winter break, teacher Elisha Jines challenged her five social studies
classes to collect canned food for the district’s Backpack Program. After a slow start, the classes
collected the most in the competition’s history
Members of the Middle School Student Council hosted their own canned food drive.
Students from grades 6-8 collected several boxes of food for the HS/MS Backpack Program.
The Backpack Program benefits students throughout the entire district. Students in need
are provided a backpack filled with food to take home. When they return the backpack, they
receive another.

Area Professonals See Their Shadows

Nearly thirty KCS students participated in National Job Shadow Day. Job shadowing allows students the opportunity to follow or
“shadow” a working professional for a day to experience what that job field has to offer. It also helps relate what we teach in school to
real life. Simply put, it adds relevance and answers the students’ never ending question of “when am I ever going to use this?”
The groundhog may see its shadow and predict more winter, but when professionals see their shadow, they predict student success.

Mann to Receive Scholarship

KCS senior Terrence Mann has been selected to receive an Alfred State College
Distinguished Scholars Excellence in Education Scholarship. He qualified for the scholarship
with a 93 plus high school average and earning a minimum combined SAT score of 1200 or
26 composite ACT score. As a recipient, Terry is eligible for free tuition and room and board.
Terry would like to pursue a career in architecture.

importance of a post winter home
checkup. Once the cold weather
has winded down, consider the
following tips to ensure that your
home has made it through another
winter in one piece.
* See your ceilings for the very
first time. For those who live in
areas with heavy winter snowfall,
a telltale sign of a leak is a
stained ceiling, which might
appear brown or yellow after a
few months of water infiltration.
Note where these stains are, and
then go outside and examine the
corresponding areas of your roof.
Even if you notice stains in the
middle of winter, it’s best to wait
till after the winter to inspect this
problem. Going up on a roof in
bad weather is asking for trouble.

Once you’ve identified the
trouble spots, you can seek the
help of a professional roofer.
Unfortunately, if you’ve noticed
the aforementioned brown or
yellow spots on your ceilings,
you’ll likely need to seal and
paint the entire ceiling, even
where no spots exist. Otherwise,
the ceilings will not look as
uniform or appealing.
* Locate your ladder and get
ready to climb and clean. Areas
almost all homeowners will
notice need some post-winter
work are the gutters and
downspouts. While a leaky roof
could be the culprit with respect
to water damage, that water
damage could also be the result of
clogged gutters or downspouts.
And just because you might have
made it through winter without
water damage, that doesn’t
necessarily mean your gutters and
downspouts aren’t backed up.
One of the first post-winter
projects to address is to clean out

these gutters and downspouts.
Remove any and all debris that
could lead to backup. And do so
on a day that’s guaranteed to be
sunny, so you can dismantle the
downspouts to be sure they’re
clear from top to bottom.
* Address any possible door
damage. While storm doors aren’t
as prevalent as they once were,
they do still exist, and they often
bear the brunt of winter weather.
When winter winds begin to
howl, they often do so at the
expense of storm doors, which
can become bent or even break.
If the main entrance to your home
doesn’t have a storm door to bear
the brunt of Mother Nature’s
winter wrath, the front door itself
likely took the brunt of weather
over the last several months.
Check the door for any nicks or
scratching, and inspect to see if it
could use a new coat of paint.
* Don’t forget the basement. For
many, the basement is not the
most popular place in a home
throughout the winter months.
That’s because cold air descends,
making the basement the coldest
room in the house. But just
because you might have
overlooked the basement the last
several months, that doesn’t mean
Mother Nature has. Water buildup
in the basement can lead to dry
rot and the accumulation of mold.
Make a basement inspection a top
priority once winter has finally
left for the season.
